I am full of questions today. :D  So here's some more...what supplies do you plan to have on hand for delivery? I plan to have Nutri-Cal drops ( Bovidr Laboratories Inc - Pet Nutri-Drops #122-150-Z ), Calsorb ( calsorb ), whelping pudding for Livi, Geoff is building this whelping box for her: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/2563277-post11.html I will have the heating pad, blankets, towels....what are the other basics that I am missing?? I was told by a breeder that she uses her fingernail instead of the hemostats...is this an okay idea?? I have prepared and researched for over three years, but now that she is pregnant, I feel lost and confused. It's so different when it's your own fur kid that is facing delivery! Tammy |

Scissors, Clock that displays seconds, paper and pen for writing down birth times, contractions, time in between births ... digital postage scale to keep track of pups weights, alcohol to clean tools, emergency formula and bottles/syringes in case a pup doesn't want to nurse, I buy a big stack of wash clothes (they are just the right size for cleaning pups off). Also, KY jelly in case she has a hard time pushing a pup out. Don't forget to have your emergency numbers handy, I've called my own vets a few times during delivery and it's a lot easier having the numbers in your "birthing box" than having to search through the phone book. |
Wanted to add ... I was looking through my own birthing box getting ready for my girls delivery next week and wanted to add, have a bulb syringe in your kit for cleaning out puppies mouths/noses if needed and thermometer to keep tabs on moms temp. during and after delivery. |
Dental floss works well to tie off the cords before they are cut. Also...have a few feeding tubes handy just incase babies will not accept the bottle or syringe. As Sue already mentioned...a digital scale will be worth it's weight in gold, as you will be using it daily for the 1st few weeks. Especially if you have a tiny or two. |
Thanks Sue and Karen! I have all that you mentioned except for the bulb and the feeding tubes (let's hope that those are not needed!). So once I get these things that you guys mentioned, I will be pretty set. ?? I am getting even more nervous now.... |

The best advice I can give you is to have your vet, and emergency vet #'s within reach at all times. And DO NOT hesitate to use them if you feel something is not right. With that said...I am sure all will go well...and we will be here with you through it all. :) |
Due June 2 :animal36 This is Lizzie's first litter and I'm so excited. She also has the spots. Here are some belly pics from day 56. She is now on day 58. Took her to the vet for her health check up and to see how many and he said 2-3. I can't get the pics to upload, will try again later. |

1 Attachment(s) How are your soon to be mommies doing? Livi is doing good...just resting more than usual. Her starting weight was 5.6/5.7 and she is now up to 6.4lbs. It now getting to the point that when I pick her up, it is a bit more difficult because she getting round and there's not a comfortable way to hold her. I hope to be able to feel her babies moving soon. I know it was only 4 days ago that I posted her belly picture, but here is one from today. :) Tammy |
I meant to ask if any of you shave/trim your females before they have their babies. I went ahead and shaved Livi today (a little shorter than a puppy cut). I also cut her tummy hair pretty short. Tammy |
Well, I personally don't have a litter(although I am going to breed Holly once she has her 2nd heat....October 2009), but my daughter's Yorkie Mia is due on June 19th,2009 & Holly's mommy, Keera is due on June 30th, 2009. I am probably going to get a boy from my daughter Camryn's litter to breed Holly with. |
:D My Gigi just finished delivering 4 beautiful little girls. Everything went very smoothly. |
