Birthing Questions?!?

Hello all I was searching the net for all the info I could find on birthing pups and came across this wonderful site. I'm Shawna the proud Mommy of She'za a wonderful wonderful Yorkie I rescued from a horrid home about 4 months ago. I'm not sure how old she is, but we now find ourselves pregnant with her 1st litter of Pups. This was TOTALLY unintentional, when she went into heat we stayed with her outside at all time and did our best to make sure she wasnt bred, it didnt work! lol So I have researched and researched, I've got her bed all ready to go, and as prepared as I can be I think ( this is also my first litter of puppies! )
Last night she had a mucusy discharge, and I just took her temp and it was 99.5, from everything I have read ( mostly on this wonderful site) We should be nearing birth right?!? Any bits of advice, what to look fors, anything?!? I am really nervous!!! Thanks so much in advance, Have a wonderful day!!!

:wavey:hi and welcome to YT. You might want to post this in the breeder section. They will be able to help you prepare. Thank God for people like you who rescue our sweet little babies! Congrats on the litter. You will have to post pics!

ShezasHuman 04-22-2009 02:14 PM

Thank you so much I will do that, and I will definatley post pics when they get here! They are ganna be 1/2 Yorkie 1/2 Pug puppies, I need a cute name for them so far all I can come up with is Purkie Puppies! lol

paulalowe6 04-22-2009 02:23 PM

Welcome to YT! How big is your girl? I think I would be taking her to the vet for an xray just to make sure she can deliver without a c-section. Good luck. I certainly hope she does o.k. Keep us posted:animal-pa

She'za is a good sized girl, she weigh's about 7 lbs. I did take her to the vet right after conception, and he said with the size of both dogs, she should have no problem birthing.

The is a great book by Terri Shumski (yorkie breeder and judge, but now deceased): How To Buy And Raise A Good Healthy Dog. Wonderful stuff about breeding and whelping (the correct term, not birthing.). Not trying to be a smart butt, but you're a breeder now.

How about Pug/Yorkie crosses...since that's what they are. Don't fall into the ranks of the "designer breeds" please! ;)

Yes, it does sound like you are getting close. What is her due date? Do you have a rough estimate of how many you are expecting? Make sure that you have her whelping box ready so that she has a "quiet" place to go. Watch her carefully for signs that she is nesting or trying to seclude herself from you. Make sure you have all your supplies ready.

Good Luck! (Also, could you please not use the pink font? It is very hard to read. :) )

How about a Porkie? I think that's the funniest. IMO I think if shelters gave their dogs cute names they would be adopted faster. Marketing is key!

Her due date is tomorrow, I "think" there are 3 maybe 4 pups:D I've got her in her whelping box now resting, she has been in Mommy mode all day, right next to me, she just started throwing up and went to her box. Checked her temp again still the same. She seemed to be haveing some mild contractions but they are about 10 mins apart.

katelin 04-22-2009 06:16 PM

Remember she shouldn't push for more than 20 minutes without a pup -- I'd call my vet after about 15 minutes. That is pushing, not contractions. You'll be able to tell the difference if you have had a baby yourself.

Remember pugs have a larger head than most yorkies, so watch for any problems with the birth.

Also, I've read that these are called Pugorkies.

Good luck for an easy and healthy whelp.

Forget the temp taking, you can't always count on it.

mild contractions are fine, but if she has 10 strong contractions without a pup, get her to the vet.

Here's things to watch for.

Constant hard labor for more than an hour with no results.

Green or odorous discharge from the vulva

An interval of two hours between pups with occasional hard laor.

One hour of hard labor and no puppies

Three hours of no labor between pups and you think there is another pup.

After the first pup is born and cleaned, put it to the mom to suckle, it'll begin the contracations again to deliver the remaining pups.

Do you have NutriDrops on hand, if so you might want to give her some to give her strength.

LazyDaisy 04-22-2009 07:12 PM

Sure sounds close to me! Just get your check list of supplies ready, and when whelping starts keep Yorkie Talk handy as there is always someone around here willing to help :)

Good luck with your whelping...Can't wait to see pictures!

LOL...they DON'T actually have a name. :p They are not a recognized breed, however many people have devised their own "names" used to refer to them instead of calling them mutts or _____ mix/crosses.

By chance, did your vet do an xray? Just wondering if it indicated that the head size would be an issue. Has she had any contractions or made any efforts to push at this point?

Puppy Watch has started!!! We have been at the vets all morning, they did an xray and she said their are 5 puppies, from what she can tell She'za should be able to whelp BUT her cervex is wide open and she should be pushing on her own by now and she's not. So they are keeping here there and giveing her Calcium and IV ocitocin ( sp) to help her along, and if that doesnt work then they are going to do a c section. They are suppossed to call me if she starts pushing, or if they have to go in to get them either way so that I can be there with her. Im such a nervous wreak right now and Im so worried about my baby!!!:eek::eek:

Sidenote: I couldnt find anything on Pugorkies, but I did find a bunch of links for Pugshire puppies. I know either way they are just a mixed breed "mutts" but I think they are ganna be adorable!!!

chattiesmom 04-23-2009 09:14 AM

Good luck with the impending whelping. Please continue to keep us posted.

fon 04-23-2009 09:25 AM

good luck

katelin 04-23-2009 10:57 AM

Glad she is at the vets. Good luck.

I've heard the name Pugshire too. The female I heard of was a pug, who bred to a yorkie. She had 7 puppies and all but the runt looked like pugs. I understand her labor was long, but she eventually had all of them on her own.

rbelland 04-23-2009 11:58 AM

Wishing you the best!!! Keep us posted!!!

ShezasHuman 04-23-2009 06:27 PM

It is with the heavest of hearts that I make this post, She'za gave birth via C-Section at 6:15 this evening to 6 beautiful babies. 4 girls and 2 boys all were jet black. Unfortunately Edward,Jacob,Bella,Esme,Hope and Izzy did not make it. They were premature, oviously I had my date wrong and she did not get bred with the first time. She was fully dialated, but even with the help of the drugs she would not contract enough to have them on her own. The vet said she just didnt think her little body could handle the pregnancy and that is what caused the early labor. She'za is doing ok, they were ganna let me bring her home tonight, but the vet called a few minutes ago and said that she was very aggitated and in pain so they gave her some pain meds and a mild sedative and the vet is takeing her home with her tonight so she can give her more medication if she needs it through the night. My family is heartbroken! I was able to be there with her during the csection and to spend some time with the puppies before they passed over the rainbow bridge. I did ask the vet to spay her while she was there, I never want my baby to have to go thru that again and honestly I never want to have to do it again either. I truely feel like I have lost a baby myself, I know how it must feel to She'za. Thank you all for your advice and well wishes, please keep us all in your prayers exspecialy my little She'za as we cope with this very heartbreaking loss.

Mardelin 04-23-2009 07:28 PM

I'm really sorry to hear this. You did everything right. What a wonderful vet you have to make sure your girl has the best care.

bjh 04-23-2009 07:56 PM

I am so sorry for the loss of the babies. You and the vet did what was necessary. I pray the momma makes a speedy recovery. Hugs.

BamaFan121s 04-24-2009 04:23 AM

Awww...I am very sorry to hear about the loss of the pups. :( You did exactly what you should have done by getting her to the vet to deliver the puppies. I hope mom has a speedy recovery. Glad you have such a great vet who is willing to take her home and care for her overnight.

ShezasHuman 04-25-2009 07:59 AM

Thank you all so much for your thoughts! It has been a very hard few days on all of us! She\'za is home now, she has meds to take for a while but she is great about takeing them!!! She truely is the BEST dog I have ever had!!! I am so grateful that she came thru everything alright I dont know what I would have done if I\'d lost her as well!!! She seems to be doing well, not quite herself yet, seems sad and just wants Mommy! But overall she is well. Thank you all again for all you kind words and advice thru this difficult time!!!

luckylady 04-25-2009 08:39 AM
