Yorkie Due any day now..... Hi, everyone. We are expecting our first litter any day now. Mama is huge. She has her milk and the puppies are very active. She is now on day 58 and she has started digging and she is shedding her mucus plug. She has not eaten very much today. I woke to her scratching in the corner. She has been doing that more lately. I am excited and we are expecting 4 or more puppies. She is gonna be a great mommy. She is sleeping alot today. She is due on April 23rd, but I think she may go tonight or tomorrow. I will keep you posted. Mary:) |
Sounds like she's getting close. Let's hope that she can hold out a few more days! :xfingers: Good luck! |
She finally ate. So, I figure she will hold out for a few more days. She just seems so uncomfortable. She is so picky about food anymore. I have to mix wet food with her dry just to get her to eat. She turns her nose up at the dry food. She is resting now and seems to be okay. If anything changes I will be sure to let you all know. |
Do you have her on puppy food? If not, she should be on that, and also, try giving her one tum a day, if she won't take it, chew it up and then try giving it to her. She needs calcium right now |
Hi, yes she is on puppy food right now. I have heard to give her a tums after she delivered. I didn't know you were supposed to give it to her now. I will get some and give them to her. She is still sleeping. Thank you for your advice. |
It is not advised to give calcium before they deliver pups. As long as she is on a good quality puppy food or all stages of life food that is all she really needs. During delivery I always give my mommas little bits of Nutri-cal between pups. Some people will give a tums or calcium supplement during delivery. You momma's puppies may be dropping and getting into position for delivery. Often when the pups drop the momma might starting digging around and nesting more even though the pups are not due for several days. They are just anticipating the big event. It sounds like she could have them anytime. I pray she has a safe whelping. |
Hi Mary! Oooo, exciting times for you coming up shortly; congratulations on you upcoming litter. I will be watching this thread closely as I LOVE puppy watches and yorkie puppies! I agree with bjh.........hold off on the calcium until AFTER the puppies arrive. Good luck to you & the little mama:) |
I was thinking your not supposed to give calcium in the last week of pregnancy. I have been reading a lot about it since this is my first and her first litter. I do have nutri-cal to give her after birth. Thank you for the info. |

I have over a year before breeding, so lots of time to read. I know it said to give a tum a day and to chew it up for them if they wouldn't take it. I knew also to give puppy food, not real sure on why on any of this stuff yet, things I have to read up on yet. |

You don't want to give extra calcium (Tums) before they deliver because it can accutually make them more susceptible to these problems because it can slow down their body's response to the low calcium caused by the new demand of nursing. Since the body is already used to an outside input, whether it needs it or not, it never uses the built in response to quickly provide more when needed. So, after puppies are born and start to nurse, the momma's body forgets how to react quickly when more calcium is needed. As to feeding puppy food prior to delivery, it is for the extra nutrition and calories. I feed Canidae All Life Stages food so I did not change. I also free feed so food is always available. I definately noticed her eating more especially 2-3 weeks prior to having the puppies. |
Hello, I just thought I would update you and let you know were on day 61 and no puppies yet. She has had a lot of discharge, all clear, but no signs of labor yet. She has not ate yet today and she is resting comfortably. She is still digging and nesting. I am sure she is close. She is quite swollen in her private area. We are anxiously awaiting our first litter. I have heard first timers whelp later. Is that always true? If anything changes, I will be sure to let you know. Thanks everyone for all the info and advice. Mary |
Congrats on your first litter , I look forward to seeing pics!! Hope mama is doing well too! |
From experience I can tell you they will just whelp when they are ready. I have had first timers deliver on the 59th and 60th days from the first breeding. I pray everything goes well for you. |
Oh how exiting!!! soon, soon, soon you will have little ones!!! Cant wait to see pictures as they arrive!! |
It is about 11:30 pm here and I took her temp and it is 98.2 degrees. So, I think she will be going soon. She is still nesting and doesn't want me out of her sight. What should I do with the daddy? Should I separate them now or wait till she starts labor? I can't wait to see these little babies. I am counting the days and hours and minutes. LOL. Thanks for all your help. Mary |
Oh how exciting!!! I would probably go ahead and seperate them now. If she is getting close, he may be stressing her out..Congrats, wish I could stay up and watch!!! |
Hi, everyone, just to let you know her temp is now 97.4 degrees. She has been nesting this morning but has not ate, only 2 slices of bacon. She is acting really strangely. When do I start to worry about her? If she doesn't go within 24 hrs, take her to the vet right? I am really getting worried, since her labor has not started yet. She doesn't seem stressed, so should I just give her time? Thank you all, this is our first litter and I know every whelp and dog is differrent, just thought you all could help me. Thanks again. Mary |
They do act strange when they are going into labor. Just try to relax with her. She is probably scared and nervous about what is happening to her. Is she trying to hide? Sometimes you might not notice the early contractions and they can go into hard labor pretty quick while others might lay around for hours just digging, panting and trying to hide. It does sound like she is getting close. Please keep us posted and best wishes for a safe whelping. |
Hi, we have PUPPIES! We have two little chocolate brown boys so far. Mom did great. She is a natural. I surprised myself and did great too. She is resting now and hopefully we will get a few more. How long can they go between births? The first one was born at 9:30 and the second at 11 pm. I heard they can got 4 or more hours. Is that true? I will update more and post pics tomorrow. Mary |
4 hours is too long between puppies Chocolate HM what color is mom and dad? |

:)I disagree that 4 hours is too long between pups. My Rosie had puppies 2 weeks ago, it was her first litter and she took a lot of time between a few puppies, the maximum time between pups with her whelp was about 5 hours. (then 2 came out with only a minute between them) I think as long as she is not pushing or in hard labor for that long, they should be o.k., that was the case for us, she had 5 healthy puppies. Still go with your gut, when my girl was taking 5 hours, i did have her ready to go to emergency vet at 4 in the morning, car was heated up, and I put her in her 'box ' to go with the pups we already had and was walking out the door, she began to push and within 2 minutes there was a sack, she whelped the last 2 at home. (all 5 at home, really) I would take her if she was activily pushing with no results, but if she is content I would say to wait a bit more, or until your scared about it. I realize that this has been several hours since your last post, so NOW it would be too long, but that is my advise. Update us when you can. |
Hello, we have 2 little boys. She did great. She expelled and ate both placentas and did not have any other contractions. Her belly feels empty and she is doing good. She goes outside and runs back in looking for her babies. Mom is a blue and tan purebred yorkie and dad is a golden purepred yorkie. My boys dad was a chocalate yorkie. So, that is probably how we got two chocolates, lol. I always wanted a chocolate. LOL. I guess I got two now. I will be keeping both. She is such a good little mama. I give her some cottage cheese and she gobbled that up. She has drank and ate. She isn't eating much. I am gonna go get her some special food and her favorite treats. I will post pics. Thank you all for all the help. We all appreciate it. Thank you for your prayers also. That helped tremendously. Oh, the first little boy was very small and weighed 4 oz. The second was pretty big and weighed 7 oz. First was born at 9:30PM and the second at 11PM. |
Congrats on your new babies! Glad all is well!!! |
To see pics of the Mommy and puppies, please go to this link: Flickr: imchrissysmama's Photostream Thanks for everything! We are all doing good and resting comfortably. It was a long night! Mary:) |
I think they are great sizes...You will have so much fun with your pups. I miss having little puppies running around! Congratulations on your new little boys! |
many congrats on the arrival of your 2 babies we are on day 44 and getting so excited i really cant wait although really nervous. |
Congratulations on your new babies! And lucky you that you will be keeping both of them. I am glad all went well for you; the whelping time can be scary sometimes for the non-experienced AND the experienced breeders both. I'm going to go look at the pictures of those cuties now.:D Wow, aren't they special! I don't know much about the different colored yorkies, but seeing them in the pics, they don't look so much chocolate as they do maybe going to be more golden. They're backs seem to have the gold in them and their faces look like regular yorkie color where normally I've seen them look brown. Just an observation as like I've said, I don't really know too much about it except through pictures. Speaking of which, I can't wait so see how these babies change, so keep posting pictures in the weeks to come please :) |
