Need quick advise- Mid-whelp! I am mid whelp here, we have 2 boys, they came so fast. Now it has been an hour or an hour and a half and we have no more coming. I am still expecting 3 pups. Can someone tell me how long to wait before we call a vet if she doesn't start her labor back up. I gave her some ice cream and chicken broth. There is still one placenta in there. Please give me some advise. I will check back in asap. Our vet is at least a half hour away. |

Bart always told me if she goes 2 hours between pups to call but he is out of town. But she still may get going before 2 hours is up . My girls last litter she was just almost at 2 hours between pups. Have you given her Nutrical as well? Is she resting? Is she straining at all? |
I forgot to ask if you made up some whelping pudding, if so give her some of that too. AND congrats on the BABIES!!! I was just getting read to answer your PM and now looks like I don't need to :) Keep going Rosie!!!! |
I just made the pudding, will give to her. I can also give nutri-cal. Thank You so much, I am nervous for her. She is resting but also she wants to keep licking their cords a lot, I am trying to stop her from doing that so much. I will check back in another 10 minutes if I can. |
She can go for quite a while if she's not in distress. I've had some go 3 hours. It's not going to hurt to call your vet. |
Right, if she is just resting, I would give her more time but YOU do what you feel is right. If you want to call I'd call. As long as she isn't struggling and pushing. hey does St Clair have 24/7 service? I'll keep check back.... |
It is very normal for her to be licking them a lot she is stimulateing them to pee Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
I know about all the licking but the one had alot of bleeding at the ambilical cord, it was all over his belly and legs, so I didn't want to start all the bleeding again. She pants just a little but for the most part she is just resting and taking care of her 1st two. I called the vet and left a message on his emergency phone, so hope fully he will call back. I don't see her in any distress, but she's tired. Those puppies came back to back, it was crazy. I just want to do whatever is right for Rosie at this point. I don't think anyone but Dr. Meadows does emergency care around here. I will tell the whole story when things wind up around here. I'll check back in a few minutes. |
If there is still a placenta in there, it needs to be expelled. My vet has us come in within 24 hours for an oxytoxin shot, to clean out the uterus. Sometimes, if the girl doesn't deliver within 3 hours, he has us give her a shot of Oxy to assist in the process. How is she doing now? |
Melissa - Congratulations on the whelping. I hope everything is going well and that by now all pups are safely delivered. If you have some CalSorb you might give her just a small amount. It will help with the conractions |
hey mellissa, I see your off line now. I hope all is ok. I'm trying to stay up a bit for you. Update when ya can :) |
Hope everything is ok.... Calcium help when low/no contraction. Let us know. |
It is 3:30 and we are still waiting on # 4 & 5. I am really tired. I will try the cal-sorb. She couldn't be waiting longer between puppies, but she is a very attentive momma so far. I will call my vet as soon as I can. I will come back tomarrow and let everyone know how it went. So far we have 3 boys. :) |
Congrats on your 3 baby boys!! You must be very tired!!! Soon you both will be able to get some rest!!!! So we are just waiting on 2 more!! Cant wait to hear how it's going! Great Job Rosie!!!! |

Wow Melissa, what a long night you've had for sure. I had hoped that she would start her whelp earlier in the evening to be done before it got to late. Looks like the pups had other ideas. Congrats on the 3 boys that arrived and I pray that the other two have arrived without difficulty and that mom & babies (and you) are doing well this morning. I will check back later for news. |
