Temp is 98.5! Hello everyone. I made it to my test today (the one that Rosie was supposed to allow me to make it to) and when I came home she had threw up on my bed while dad was watching over her. Then we checked her temp and we have been using the kind that only takes 8 seconds. When I first started I also used a mercury one so then I knew what degree difference there was between the elec. and merc. and have been subtracting the difference in order to keep using the quicker one. Any way, I got a drop to: 98.5 (actually said 97.8 + 0.7 deg.) I am a little skeptical so far if this is the onset of labor though. She isn't showing any other signs yet. Is it normal to not see any other signs for a few more hours? I don't want to get too excited yet because what if she's tricking me? We are on day 61, 59, or 56 depending on which tie did the trick. Vet seemed to think the calcification of the bones in her x-ray indicates she is on the sooner end of this range, but who really knows. If anyone reads this and has advise or wants to say a prayer for us to have a safe whelp, that would be appreciated. -Melissa & Rosie. Thank God I don't have to leave my house again for class until next Monday.:) |
It sounds to me she may have those babies soon! I would be exited anyhow just by the suspense!! LOL I believe the temp drop is first but all dogs are different. I would just keep a good eye on her!:) I will pray for a safe whelp and I will check back for updates. I probly get as exited as you all do!!!:) |
Thanks, you know with how many million times I went over all the info i could find about whelping, when something like this actually happens it seems like you forget eveything you tried to learn, probably because it's so exciting. |
I have a book on all the stuff I have learned and I just go over and over. I print off everything, its a wonder I have money for anything else but inc!!! Most of it is from here and my vet of course. It is amazing how fast we forget what comes next, but I think you and Rosie will do great!:) |
What was her baseline temp before it dropped to where it is now? |
Isn't it that labor will USUALLY begin within 24 hours after the temp drop? It's been over a year since my one and only whelp so far and it was anything but textbook, so I'm just kind of remembering what I have read or seen here on YT. Good luck to you........we'll be staying tuned to this thread.:D |
Her baseline about a week ago was between 100.4 and 99.9, those were the first 2 I recorded anyway. Sunday it got down to about 99.2 in the evening. I gave her a few days off because she'll fight me so bad if I don't have help holding her still, then after I found out she threw up today I checked it and it was at 98.5. I am going to do it again right now. She is still eating the chicken I gave her and a little wet dog food about an 1/2 hour ago, but just a little bit of it ( I think it was just because the other dogs were watching and she didn't want them to have it) Let me go take it again. O.k. it is back up to 99.7. I think she is messing with me today.:( When the temp drops, does it stay down or go back up before labor? |
I've read the average whelping temp is between 98-99, and that it spikes high, then drops with labor within 24 hours. Her temp being up a bit now could be caused from being up and about moving around, playing or what ever.....so the drop to 98.5 could be legit in telling us whelping is near. But these girls sure do have a way of playing with our minds, don't they:rolleyes: Let's just suffice it to say that she will likely have them before you have to leave for class on Monday......or at least we sure hope so!:D |
I believe she played with you today, lol The temp usually takes a real nose dive and stays there until whelping starts, usually within 24 hours. Once it starts the temp then can go back up. But with a temp going down and up and down, usually not the time. When that temp takes the nose dive, trust me, you'll be posting, OMG her temp is 96.8 lol Now this is USUALLY the norm in whelping bitches. But... every dog has their day! |
I sent you a pm but mine will drop and if it STAYS dropped we normally have babies in 12-24 hours. Once I get a drop I check it every hour to make sure it stays down. Keep me posted! Oh and mine normally throw up but its when the contractions are starting. |
Abby's temp stayed in the 99-100 range going up and down within that range then one morning I got up and it was 98.4 it stayed down all day and she didn't start the panting untill 11 pm. that night and didn't deliver the first baby until 5 am the next morning. So it could be awhile, but hopefully sooner than later. Today is Abby's 64 day from the first tie and day 61 from the second and 60 from third tie and her temp was 99.9 as of about 1/2 hour ago. Im ready to see babies. How long is too long before they should be having them? I am just assuming that she didn't conceive on the first tie. Also, the first tie was pretty early in her cycle. The second tie was on day 10 after bleeding started so am pretty sure this is the day she most probably conceived, and was the day she conceived on her last litter. Congrats. and hope you have babies soon.:D |

Congratulations on your new babies. Can't wait to see pictures. I'm still waiting. Abby's temp was 99.4 and them 100.0 so I guess not today. |
Yoooo Whooooo Mellisa? How is everything going? |
Well I come here to check for updates on Rosie and see that we have another puppy watch going on and yet another member with a new litter born! Yay!:) So, first to the OP...............how's Rosie doing? Any new developments? Keep us posted and good luck! :) To Micah my love: Congratulations on Annie's nice litter! I hope everyone is doing well; are there pictures posted anywhere yet? Love those newborn puppy pictures!!!:D And to dd2: I guess we're still waiting for Abby's pups to come too. I love puppy watches, so please let us know when the pups arrive. :) Good luck! |
Well, we are not in full labor, but she may be getting pretty close. Her temp went up after I posted this and then within a few hours it went down to 98.4 again. She did some weird stuff while we were watching t.v. last night, she looked like she got uncomfortable with a contraction, and she is still sleeping this morning (which she always is) but she's breathing more heavily while she sleeps. I think we are getting closer, and today is day 63 for her first tie w/the stud, so it's gotta be soon! Thanks so much for asking, I gotta go check on these other threads and catch up!:D |
This is so exciting!! I'm keeping an eye out . . .hope all goes well for you!:D |

So!!!!! Do we have any little ones yet???? |
No, not yet.:( I slept with her on the floor last night, she must have dug in her bedding 20-25 times through the night, which she has not been doing really. It is getting closer for sure. She's breathing heavier but not straining yet. I have put off going to the store for groceries for 3 or 4 days now, I'll bet if I go grocery shopping she'll have them when I am gone, maybe I should go do that.:D |

LOL!!! That is the way it works. Once we think it is not going to happen or we start to ease up, well here they come!!!!! I feel the same way at work! I start to make myself some coffee and well here comes the crowd!! Coffee is cold now.lol I will be thinking of you and Rosie!!!! |
Well, Rosie has not wanted to eat all day, she won't drink any water either, I made her drink a little with a syringe and she also took some nutri-cal twice today, but other than that she is just laying around, she shivered for 5 minutes but other that that she' just laid around mostly. Should I be seeing any contractions before she goes into labor? I am starting to think a puppy can't come down the birth canal or something, I did listen to heartbeats though. I am probably just being a bit paranoid, I hope that's all it is. I haven't left my house since wednesday, so now I have a bad case of cabin fever, I went and helped my sister change her oil in the driveway today, but that's all i have done, oh and some laundry too. She's killing me! |
I know exactly how you feel. These puppy watches can really wear you out. Just be patient. It sounds like she is getting close. The early contractions are hard to spot but the mommas are usually restless, they will dig and want to hide. As the contractions get stronger she may vomit and need to poop a couple of time. As the harder contractions start she will start panting heavily. I pray all goes well with the whelping. |
Sounds to me that Rosie is going to keep you up all night...........hopefully though things will start to progress sooner rather than later and the pups will start to arrive earlier. I've been sitting at home all day (gray, cold, and windy outside), so I'm pretty bored and could use some exicitment. Come on Rosie!!!!!!:D |
What is her temp now? |
