New day. Since she had them on Monday, I guess this is day three, so we should go for tail docking today, but I am real concerned with their weights. Got a scale yesterday, and used ounces. I should have used grams to be more accurate. Here were their weights yesterday, in order of birth... 4.95 4.25 4.20 4.75 4.15 and today... 4.70 4.20 4.15 4.75 4.10 no one is gaining, most have lost, they have been at teat almost constantly since dinnertime last night. Mom was panting pretty hard late last night, and felt pretty warm to me, I took temp and it said 102.5 I guess not too bad, but I suspect she is drying up. I have been giving her puppy food, cottage cheese and a little ice cream, all of which she has gobbled down (and has diarrhea from) I think it is time for a call to the vet. Still no pics, it keeps saying the file is too big. grrr |
If I were you I would call ur vet..He is the best one for advice right now since he is there and knows the situation...Honey you need to talk to him on a daily basis ...Till they get out of danger.. Why would she be drying up ....as long as the babies are nursing she should have milk....But I'm not a dr...Your vet is the best for medical advice...But we will support you imotionaly...Keep us up dated... We just got back from vet. He pumped them up with liquids and vitamins, as they were all dehydrated from not getting enuf milk from mom. Now we are bottle feeding every hour, and still letting mom nurse as much as she and they want to try and get her milk stored up. I am off work for two weeks vacation, and hope that when I go back I will get laid off for a month (they have been doing voluntary layoffs for two months now, but are making us take turns) I want to be home round the clock to take care of them. Mommy is eating well, but doc said her uterus almost ruptured from the babies, so we are fortunate we brought her in and did c-sec and spay. No tail docking, maybe monday if they are doing better. We were at vet for two hours, and the vet tech was with us almost the whole time, helping us to learn bottle feeding, etc. Charged us $24.50 for the visit. Well worth triple that, as far as I am concerned. Hubby keeps saying these "free" puppies are getting more expensive by the day. lol I am just glad I have a vet who seems to care. |
I am so glad u do too.Or it would have been thousands of dollars....U do indeed have a very caring vets....Kudos to ur vet...:) |
I've been silently watching this thread and just want to say congratulations on the litter and I'm glad everyone (including you) are doing well. Also, I know you are having issues uploading pictures and probably don't have much time to figure it out. If you want to email them to me, I'd be more than happy to get them posted for you. Just send me a PM! |
Wow. I am so impressed by you! Do you know what kind of dog the father is? |
Your doing a wonderful job with your babies and momma. You must be exhusted from worry and taking care of all those little ones. I hope it get's easier for you soon. Hugs, |
I am glad to hear that things are getting better. Congrats on the litter and I hope that things continue to go well.... |
first feeding by myself was a challenge. their little legs wiggle right out of the towel I am trying to hold them in. :p Then I keep having to warm up the formula cause it takes a while to feed five by yourself. I think I fed to much to one of them cause when she was done, it sounded like she was breathing it. I hope it didnt end up in her lungs  It will get easier, round two is comin up now. Can someone put on some coffee? :tired: |

you have a wonderful vet it seems. I am glad things are going better for you. if it is sounding like it is breathing it, The pup may have aspirated some of the forumla. be careful. Don't mean to scare you but you always have to be careful when tube or bottle feeding about aspiration pneumonia. I can't wait to see pictures of your babies. i hope hubby will help you so you can get some rest. |
Just a quickie, pups are doing much better with supplemental feedings, they all now weigh over 6 oz's and arent dehydrated anymore. Took everyone to vet yesterday and everything looks better to him, we go back on monday to decide on tail docking. Vet doesnt really want to because of all the trouble they have had, he said he would rather see a live puppy with a tail than a dead one with a cute cropped one. Good point, and we ARE now past the three day mark. It will be eight days on monday, just dont know what we will be doing. I got a fantastic pic of the puppies with the new camera, and i have it in my kodak gallery on the computer, but I may have to email it to get it out of there. So that is one more stupid thing I have to learn. I hate technology. Mom is certainly doing better with being a momma, actually I think she is going a little overboard she gets wigged out when I have the puppies for feeding, she gets very upset at night and jumps up on my bed five or six times just to smack me in the face and wake me up, still havent figured that out! Man am I glad we spayed her, lol!!!! |

The green colored poop and discharge is normal after birth. Congrats on litter. Make sure each pup can latch on so all get enough milk. I give new babies a drop of nutridrops after they are cleaned up so they have a surge of energy to search for teat and hold on. Works well. Take care, Sue |
