Heavy panting now?
 

Mom and babies are doing well all day- both are eating, mom had a big bowel movement, but now all of a sudden she is REALLY REALLY panting. I have an appointment at the vets in the am - but I am really worried about her.
This evening she did excrete some more of a placenta, could this be after birth? Her trying to expel the placenta etc. She had 5 pups and excreted 2 or 3 placentas.... pray everything is ok... she is really uncomfortable again.
Yet... another sleepless night I think.... I am scared for her.

Did you take her temperature? Is she just too hot in the whelping bed? Its always possible she retained a placenta which will cause her to get sick. Its good you have a vet appointment in the am.

She is warm in there I keep bringing her out to cool her down because the pups are asleep - but she just wants to be close to them.
I do really believe that there is a placenta in there. Will she be okay until tomorrow morning?
She is panting an awful lot - I turned off the heating pad too to help and put cool water on her belly for a minute, but she doesn't want me to coddle her, she just wants her babies

I always put the heating pad in only 1/2 of the box so she can get off the pad if she is hot but stays close to the babies. You should take her temp to see if she has a fever.

no fever - i just gave her more cold water, the breathing / panting is almost like she is in labor again though... and it is worse when the pups are nursing.
will she be okay till morning if it is a retained placenta?

I am not a vet and dont like to give out advice just in case it turns out the wrong advice. If she doesnt have a temp, she should be ok till your appt tomarrow. Maybe give her a little Nutrical. But if you are concerned and she is acting sick, I would go to the emergency vet just in case. Personally I hate the emergency vets as they only seem concerned about the $$$.

I know - I will wait it out till morning and pray my heart out all night!

After whelping, it takes a couple days for the Mom's uterus to contract and what you'll see is heavy panting, especially when the pups nurse. Their sucking action helps to contract the uterus. I'm not saying nothing may be wrong but the panting is a normal post-whelping behavior. The vet can give her an oxytoxin shot which will help the uterus contract and can also help in milk production. If you're worried at all you should see a vet and if you think it's an emergency, maybe call an emergency vet and see what they think. No one on the internet is really there so any advise is limited by that. Better to be safe than sorry.

Please let us know how she does!! Has she been eating ok? Usually a dog with a good appetite and no fever will be ok.

Mom is good, still panting though it slowed through the night... she is due to go to the vets at 11:20 so I will feel rest assured! Somewhat!...
It is great to have this forum to bounce things off of people, I appreciate the thoughts, advice, ideas and encouragements. I felt really good after talking to the vet yesterday. I gave Tink a bath and got her all cleaned u, which felt better!
She is such a good momma to those babies! My baby isn't a baby anymore!
Unbelievable! She is now peeing 'normal' size and color again. And bowels are getting better too. She is eating well, I will get soem nutrical today to help her. Normally I would have had it - I printed off the whelping pudding the day she gave birth but never made it on time - she was not due till the 8-12th of March, but MUST have had dates wrong, cause pups are thriving!
I will get some digital scales at WalMart and something to mark them today so I know who is who... see this was all my weekend project - man did I "miss it"! Just very very thankful to God that all of this went well. So far so good!

I will post an update when we get home and settled from the mean vet who is going to do the tails and dew claws today...:( so sad but necessary! )

I had to rush my female to the emergency vets on Friday. Her puppies were 11 days old and I awoke to hearing very heavy panting and when I turned on the lights she was hiding under the night stand. When I pulled her out she was panting, drewling and was twitching. When I took her temperature it was 102. I immediately dressed and rushed her to our emergency vet. Sure enough she was diagnosed with eclampsia. They put her on an IV to start calcium and also subcutaniously. I picked her up that night and now I have four 2 week old babies I need to bottle feed. Mom is doing great but she is crying for her puppies.

Can you give her pups back to her? Or did the vet say to take her from them? Did the vet give you advise on how to supplement her? I am not an expert on eclampsia, but am very curious about this. I hope everything sorts itself out for you, good thing you noticed when you did. Keep us posted.

Oh I hope your baby is better! I did take mom and she was okay - she did have to go on some meds, but all is well! Her and pups esp are thriving! She is just starting to get back to herself now. It def is a scary thing!

No, unfortunately I was advised not to by the vet and spoke with a few other breeders who advised also not to. I did some research and there is a video I watched where a vet is treating a Yorkie with it. This is exactly how my Amelia looked . After watching the video, it looks like the vet was encouraging her to go back to her puppies.

Amelia\'s calcium level when I took her in was 0.64. When I picked up up that night she was 1.17. The follow up is 200 mg. of regular strength tums given 1/2 tum every 8 hours and follow up with another calcium check in a week.
