When I had my first yorkie litter the momma, Dixie, got eclampsia when her pups were about 10 days old. We rushed her to the vet and they gave her calcium through an iv. The vet told us to not let the pups nurse for at least 6 hours and then it would be okay. Dixie did just fine with her pups after that but I just made sure I gave her calcium twice a day. A couple of years after that I was introduced to Cal-sorb by my vet and one day I had a bitch have a eclampsia attack and I gave her cal-sorb and she was completely back to normal in 30 minutes. During my 12 years of breeding that has been my experience with eclampsia. I really feel the best way to prevent it is to make sure the momma eats 4 good meals a day and make sure she gets a calcium supplement. |
