Urgent - need help from breeders Okay, I tried to find a previous thread, but the search isn't working. I have 1 day old puppy that is gaining weight but crying a lot. I gave it some of the baby gas drops, tried to stimulate it to potty, and it's still crying. I made sure that it was warm. I also gave it a little formula hoping that it was just hungry. Contacted the vet and they said that I couldn't do any more than I was doing b/c there are no medicines that they could give her since she was so young. When stimulating all she did was pee. I think that she might be constipated. Is there any suggestions that I can do to help this little girl out? Thanks in advance for the advice. |

She is trying to, but is in the same boat that I am in. She hasn't latched on to nurse since this morning. Her belly is plump, that's why I thought that it was just gas. |
I've heard that a drop of white corn syrup can relieve constipation in newborns, but I truly don't know how true that is. Maybe a warm wash cloth on the puppy's belly? |
Is the puppy's temp normal? |
was the pup crying before it nursed or after? did it eat when you gave it formula? when you stimulated it did you rub its bum too? i use a warm wet wash clothe to stimulate them to poo. do you have them on a heated pad? sorry so many questions, but would love to help if i can. renae |
She has been crying off & on all day. She cries before & after. She's not wanting to latch on when I try to get her to. She did get some of the formula in her, but was really acting like she wasn't interested. I did rub her bum area and tried to get her to go that way. Her temp is 99.7 and a little poo came out with it. She's still whining but not as much. She did pee quite a bit when I stimulated her, but not #2. |

did it latch on yesturday? did you check for a cleft pallet? im thinking that temperature is little low. she latched on this morning? but not since then and you gave her a little formula since then? right? |
She just went poo. I stimulated her enough for that to happen. Hopefully, it's just gas. She goes to the vet on Wednesday, as they all do for the declaw & tails to be removed. She's just trying to get comfortable. Temp in the welping box is 85. |

She latched on yesterday with no problem, also again this morning with no problem. She ate when I gave her a little formula. She did go poo, just a minute ago. So you are correct that I gave her formula, she went poo, and now is not crying as much. Maybe taking her temp helped her. |
when mine are that little they are on a heating pad that the temp is around 100 degrees. i have never used a heating lamp, not sure if that is warm enough. but her temp should be a little higher. i am more concerend about her not eating much today. at that age they need to eat alot of time during the day. i swear mine nurse all the time at that age. the fact that she has only ate twice is worrisome to me. do you have nutri drops? |
Checked for cleft pallet and she doesn't have one. Will put the heating pad in on one side. |
have you tried to get her to latch on lately? |

Yes, and she's not interested. I did give her some nutri drops. |
I would offer more formula. Some puppies can lose the instinct to suck, especially if they have gone a long period without feeding it. Sometimes once you hand feed once, you're stuck doing it. I'd still try to get her to suck, but I'd offer formula, too. |
i would be very concerned she isnt eating. have you tried to give her some more formula. i would do that with a dropper, at this point any amout is better than none. is it your littlest one that is the one crying? i think i saw you had one that was 2.3 ounces? she really need nutrition. i wish i could tell you how to tube feed her, but im not too sure myself. never had to do it. |
is she alert or sleepy? |
I'd also be worried about hydration at this point. You can deliver fluids by injection if you can't get liquids in her the old fashioned way. Or have your vet do it if you don't have the supplies at home. The vet could also insert a tube... sounds tricky to do at home, though I know breeders do. |
She just went poo again. I am going to give her a little more formula and then see what happens. She's sleepy but crying in her sleep. |
Poor sweetheart - I hope she comes around. It sounds like you're working hard with her. I'm glad she pooed, at the very least! |
can you get her to wake up? is she lathargic? im glad she pooed, but i dont know if that is the real culprit. is she shaking? |
She ate some more formula and is sleeping with her brothers and sister. I am praying that everything works out. Thanks for all of the advice and I will keep everyone posted. |
How is she this morning? |
I would take her to the vet. Sorry to be harsh, but if she's not getting enough nutrition, she'll surely die. A vet can teach you how to tubefeed, if she's is not eating enough. She may get too weak to suck if she doesn't eat enough, she can get lethargic and start going down hill quick. If she get's too weak, she needs for the food to be literally inserted into her stomach as she gains strength enough to suckle on her own. It takes alot of energy from a tiny one. You have to watch for dehydration. You can do a pinch test on the neck skin. She may need to be sub q'd liquids if she is. Best of luck and prayers for your little one. |
She's probably in needof some sugar in the form of nutridrops or karo syrup. I would also give that before eating to stimulate her appetite. |
urgent I just read this I had a little older puppy just do the same thing i took him to the vet he had a bacterial infection in his tummy they gave him Albion and he was much better I had to feed him till he got a little better now you would never know anything was wrong. It is better to take them and save them then to try it on your own and loose the pup. Good luck it is so hard when they are sick |
Update.... Okay, here's the update. Mercedes died this morning. I did take her to the vet and they said that we did all that we could do. There was something internally wrong with her bowls. Thanks everyone that posted, I do appreciate all the help. |
