she is about to pop!

Hi there,
i have a yorkie that is not due til the 12 of feb. I think any way. I have a couple questions. I have read that it takes 63 days for a pregnancy. Well my question is this. When do you start counting the days the first hook up or last? And then i have also read that their temp will lower to below 100 when they are going to have the babies. Are there exceptions for this rule? She started having contractions last night at 11pm and stopped at about 10 am this morning. No discharge but seems real tired and temp is 98. So should i expect them soon or not. This is my first litter and have tried hard to learn all i can but now i am getting nervous that i did not learn enough. Please let me know any thing you have to offer. Thanks in advance.

I will bump this for you. I do know that it is 63 days from the first tie that should be the due date. Yes there are exceptions to this rule. My Halle didn't deliver until 67 days after the first tie. Have you had an xray done? I would defintely do that. Then you will know how many and how big the pups are. I wish you and your baby all the best. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will reply. Good luck to you and your furbaby for a safe whelp.:)

You count 63 days from the first ite, but that date is not always correct because she may not have ovulated at that point. so don't be surprised if she goes beyond 63 days.

You are correct on the temperature, but I have never had any luck with taking the temps.

It appears like this is your first litter. You really should have read up on all of this before now. Get on the internet and read all you can about whelping puppies. You will need to know it when her time is due. Luckily you still have a couple of weeks to learn and ask questions.

Do you have a list of the supplies that you need. Do you have a place for her where it will be warm and quiet. Are you prepared for the possibility of a C section and for the possibility of having to hand feed the puppies.

My favorite dog breeding, whelping, and weaning website:
Canine Reproduction Video and Book on Breeding and Whelping dogs by Debbie Jensen for dog breeders and Whelping Supplies needed to deliver puppies.

You will find tons of helpful information from the many links on either side on this webpage.

You do count 63 days from the first "tie". Keep in mind that this is an aprroximate due date and can vary, give or take a few days. But if you think her due date is February 12, I am hoping that she does not have the pups anytime soon. I'm afraid having them this early the pups would be born premature & may have problems. If your female was truely having contractions, I would definitely take her to your vet & have her checked and have an xray done to determine how many pups & their sizes in comparison to the birth canal.

Good luck to you; I'll send some prayers you way. Please keep us posted.

Hi there, I'm not an expert on births, but my yorkie did have 5 healthy puppies last Oct (1st litter). My vet said to count from 1st tie (in my case it was AI) +4 days. It was accurate for me. I also wrote down other ways to count, will post that when I get home tonigt. I also did x-ray a week before. The vet only counted 3 or 4 but I counted 5 or 6. Ended up having 5 beautiful babies. I didn't do temp, just because my baby girl squirms alot & I read that you shouldn't stress out mom...Are you sure she was having contractions? I read that the mom should deliver in 24hrs from 1st temp drop, if not, she should see the vet. My girl started labor @ 4am & didn't start the actual birthing process (hard contractions) til 6pm. That's when her anmiotic sac came out at the same time w/ the 1st pup. So there was 2 sacs in her birth canal...it took 2 hrs, 15min & numerous calls to the emergency clinic to finally give birth the biggest baby girl. (usu. 1st is the biggest) Thereafter, 4 little pups followed 30min from each other. I also kept popping Altoids...read that dogs can smell nervousness in a human's breath. I was a nervous wreck!!! Another thing, my girl started throwing up (4am) having diarrhea (8am) panting on & off, kept going to her pee pad & squatting but peeing only a little (like if she had UTI). My vet said that's because her contractions were weak at that point of her labor. Is your girl having these symptoms? She couldn't hold anything down, so I gave her Nutri-Cal, & she wouldn't even eat her favorite-boiled chicken! I hope everything goes well for you and your baby girl...keep us posted!
Take care.

no babies yet

well no babies yet. she has not had a contraction since about 10 am this morning but she is not comfortable and seems anxious. her temp is still 98. well with finding out that you count days from first tie then she should be due the 5th so she is still early. thanks for all the replies. i promise i have done my home work. but it never seems like enough when you are in the spot light and it is your first. it is so good to have something like this with a support group. and to answer a question that was asked yes i have watched and read alot of different materials to prepare myself for this. i have all the things that are needed and have a vet for c-section if needed. but no i have not had an x-ray we were planning on that next week. we thought we had another 2 and half weeks. we do have a whelping box for her and every thing. we built that about 2 weeks ago and inroduced her to it. she loves it. thanks for all your concern. i will keep you posted.

My old vet used to breed, he said 62 - or + 5 days

Yorkiekids 01-26-2009 08:48 AM

I would be watching her close as possible. They do seem to get restless and have a hard time finding a comfortable position to lay in. Wishing you all the luck in the world. Please keep us posted.

mcsyzzerz 01-26-2009 09:41 AM

I'm so glad you have done some research. But, you can NEVER learn enough.

Keep reading and you'll be a pro at it. I have to say thought that as far as days, ( in Vet. school they teach them 63-73 days.)

Now i know i am going to hear it all about the 73 days. None probaly ever
go that many days but it is not a total shocker if it did. I have never had a bitch go pass 62.

Anyway, good luck :)

Still no babies

I am so glad we still do not have babies. I think maybe she will hang on to them a little longer. This is a good thing guys lol. Thanks for all your prayers and advise. No more contractions but temp is still lower than i like but i believe she is ok.

I have an awesome website I just found, hopefully there is still time to read some info. There are a lot of pages but go to the labor stages thing and there is some info there. After that I would recommend checking out the tons of other pages. (I am such a nerd about getting and reading lots of info) Hopefully that helps somehow. (If you go to the bottom of the page there a several pages that go through each stage of labor)

I think I would let her get a break from breeding for a year or so if that last litter was this last October(and it was the same dam).

jasmanea 01-27-2009 05:27 AM

also you don't have to order off the Jensen site. You can read it all online on her link:)

keeping you all posted.

hey just thought i would give you an update. munchie has not had her puppies and is acting just fine. i don't understand why she was having contractions that day but am so glad they stopped and she has not had the puppies. i have been taking her temp and it has never been 100. it has always been about 99. so i do not know if the temp thing will work with her. i talked to a vet and they said all was fine. so i am a happy camper hehehe. i will post when she decides to have the pups. i recalculated and she is not due the 12th but the 7th. i sarted counting from the last tie instead of the first. so next tues she should be able to have them. yea!!! thanks for all your help in this. you have all been so helpful and i appreciate it more than you will ever know.

In the social groups section their are both "expecting yorkies", and "whelping yorkies" groups. They are in the smae predicament that you are. Check them out!
