breeding a stud? Hello yorkie community! I have a two year old yorkie, Harley. I am convinced he is the most handsome yorkie ever. He is blonde and blue/grey. He is AKA registered. I would really like to stud him out, but I don't know how to find a reliable and safe breeder. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
What is your goal in studding him? |
Good Q, Katelin. But I would suggest the OP checks out the Breeders Fourm right here on this board, where she'll find all the info she needs, and will be asked all the right Q's. |
Although, I'm sure your Harley is the "most handsome yorkie ever", there is a lot to consider before even trying to breed your male. Please do go and read in the breeders section. Welcome to YT!:) |
reason for breeding Really, I want to breed him for two reasons. I want to have a puppy for my mom, and I would like to make some money eventually. |
If this is your goal, I definitely suggest you read through the breeders section. There are so many things involved in breeding, and truthfully I think most breeders will tell you that they don't actually make any money, but do it for the love of the breed and to better the breed. A handsome dog is not enough to make him a good stud if all of the other criteria aren't there too. For that reason, you may have trouble finding a reputable breeder who is willing to use your stud. But do educate yourself, and use that knowledge to evaluate your stud. Then you can decide whether to breed him or not. |

Alot of males change once they start breeding. They are no longer the sweet dog you once had. Alot will also starting marking everywhere. As far as the money it is alot of time involved. Sometimes not worth the money. Keeping a bitch for days. Them barking all night wanting to each other. Alot of sleepless nights. If I worked I would never do it. When I do I wonder why I did it again.LOL I get really stressed out everytime I stud my male. I am afraid they won't breed and the owner will be disappointed. I have more grey hairs over my yorkies than I do over my kids.. lol |

As far as making money, usually those who are in breeding only for the money will find a way to profit. Either by skipping on health tests, costs of evaluations, overcharging, etc. Where there is a will, there is a way. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just encouraging others to consider ALL the possibilities. It's not all roses and sunshine and the perfect atrological alignment that you have described. :) |
My brother bred his dog and I swear the boy is a humping machine now. Every female he sees he wants to mount. He doesn't mark in the house..that is a saving grace. I know a couple folks that breed and they have told me that their males are still loving but get frisky and will mark. They tend to have sex on the brain after that. Breeding is not for the faint of heart. Lots of work, never a profit unless you cut those corners and mass produce. Good luck in whatever you choose to do. Personallly as adorable and studly as my little guy is I had him fixed. I will leave the breeding to others and just enjoy my boy as my little loverman and not a stud muffin. |

i feel like anyone that breeds is in it to make money i don't care what any of them say cause if they wasn't they wouldn't sell them for an arm and leg. I just wonder if everyone says i want them to have a good home and a family to love them forever. If so are you saying only the people that can shell out money makes a good home for a dog. So lets be honest with ourselves their all out to make money.... |

You know I breed. I have two females and a boy. I stud him out every once in a while too. I wish I could say I make a living off of it, but there is no way... It helps with the vet bills, groomings, teeth cleaning, food, medications and so on. Do I make money?, not really, does it help? Yes it does. |

They sometimes sell for a arm and leg because that is what we have in them to get them here and be healthy. I know my last singleton I have ALOT of money in her already not counting my time. Will I make money.. NO Will she get a good home.. I hope so or she will have one here. The people that run puppy mills make money. They also don't care anything about their dogs health or where they end up. |

People like this have no idea what breeders put into a litter, many sleepless nights, sometimes handfeeding around the clock for weeks, vet bills, food, possible cost of an emergency c-section, being "on call" to puppies for 12 weeks. It's much more work than they realize...and we should just give them away?? I may not sell then for an arm and a leg but I sure do have an arm and a leg invested in them. Funny how people don't think a breeder should be paid for their time. |

Since I only breed 1 or 2 litters a year (2 to 3 pups in a litter) for me, for my next Champion/Show Dog. After all is said and done, I can honestly say that I'm in the red after each litterb and my TAX man can attest to it. As far as studding out a dog, there are still responsibilities that you must undertake as the stud owner. Are you prepared to assist the dam owner with the whelping. Are you willing to take back any puppies, if the dam owner is unable. Are you willing to help in finding proper homes for the pups. The list goes on. Finding a reputable breeder that will not abuse your lines is very difficult. Most reputable breeders have their own studs and most of the time they don't stud them out to the public . |
