Day 62 and I am really on the fence here! Need input...
 

Hi all!

Well, after months of lurking, I finally registered because I really need to post and get some input here. I am posting this in the breeders section also, but hoped I could get more input by posting here too--hope that is allowed.

This is regarding our 20 month old, four pound female who we bred to a 2.5 lb. male beginning on November 20.

Our little cutie pie is on day 62 at the earliest. We got several ties over about about a week or slightly less, so this would be day 62 IF she took on the first tie. They were all pretty short ties, at one minute or less, so I am worried that could be a factor.

At any rate, after three or four weeks we did notice that she had bulked up. She weighs four pounds and is a teeny little thing with very little "meat" on her. I can always feel her hip bones, which worries me, but the vet said she is just fine. She started to get a pooch to her tummy, but it really never developed into a big pregnant looking stomach. We did not get an X-ray.

Well, I had sort of given up, but holding her today I realized I cannot feel her hip bones at all anymore...she does still have the slight pooch to her tummy, but I was also able to express the tiniest bit of milk from both bottom nipples. I am currently a breastfeeding mother, so this is something very familiar to me!!! :-) Hope that isn't TMI. At any rate, I was surprised about the milk. Both bottom-most nipples also have kind of a little white dot on top anytime I look.

What are your experiences? I am wondering if I should be running out and buying a heating pad and all that. Don't want to be unprepared, but if you were a stranger just taking a look, you would not think she was pregnant. This is our first experience with a small dog. We bred larger dogs back in our younger days!

I guess I could post a picture of her belly if anyone is interested--let me know.

Hi Bridget, wanted to welcome you to yorkie talk. I have a girl that is on day 53 of her pregnancy and i can feel and see them moving. have you felt them or seen her belly move? do you have a stethescope? i have been able to hear their heartbeats for almost two week now. other than that i dont know. i would think even if there was one in there you would be able to feel them moving. just my experiences. hopefully you find out if she is or not, cause you need to be prepared.

no exray and just a 4 pounder i would prepare yourself
for anything that could come up i would not think she has milk and no pup hope it is not to big to deliver and more than one

I have heard of false pregnancys with milk, so that isnt impossible, but if they tied a couple of times i would think she should be pregnant. i would take her for a xray just in case, its not that expensive and it will save you the worry. I always xray to find out how big the pups are and how many she is having. has she been bred before? has she had puppies?

she is almost two and has never been bred...

can you have her lay real still and hold her belly to see if it is moving. you should be able to feel them moving?

If it was my dog, I'd be at the vets getting an x-ray. These tiny dogs frequently have trouble delivering and you don't even know for sure if she is pregnant. I'd be very worried that I wasn't prepared for this.

I would definitely take her to the vet to find out for sure is she is pregnant and for xrays to see if there are pups, how many, and if they will be small enough to fit through her birth canal.

If you suspect that your female is pregnant....or even when you had planned on her getting pregnant, you should have all the whelping supplies (heating pad you mentioned, & other things) on hand long before she is due. I would definitely take her to the vet. Our little girl got noticeably huge, and she only had two pups each litter. BUT, each time, the pups were to big for Sicily to deliver, and she required a c-section. (we didn't know with the first litter, and lost one of the puppies.)

Also, this last time, the vet told me that once you can express milk, labor should start within 24-36 hours. Definitelytake her in to make sure that both she and her pup (if there is any) make it through healthy!

No, honestly, I have not taken her for an Xray because she really does not have a big PG belly and I feel like they will just laugh at me. My husband keeps looking and saying no, no way, she is not. I wish I could post a belly photo on here....I do not know if it is because I have a Mac or what....I am going to try again. Thanks.

My female had a false pregnancy, after her last heat. She had milk when she "would have had" the puppies. However, she had not been bred, so there was no possibility of her whelping. I would take my little girl to the vet and have her checked right away, it is much better to be safe than sorry. A dog that little needs constant supervision, if she is ready to whelp. Not taking her to the vet, could have disastrous results! Good luck!

Here's a picture of our little Sicily when she was about day 63 or so- just a bit before she went in for her c-section. You can for sure see the difference, and like I said, there were only 2 pups....

Believe me, toy dogs do no thave to look pregnant to be pregnant. I had a papillon bitch with a singleton that never gained even a half pound and looked totally normal. I also had one with a litter of 6 that you could tell was pregnant but I suspected only 1-2 puppies until she was x-rayed.

I would not feel stupid about x-raying a bitch that I knew had mutliple ties during her last heat, even if she weighed less than she did before that!

I have a Mac too and and can post pics so you should be able to also. Did you resize them? That could be the problem. Here's info on the file size. Let me know if you need any help. I export mine from IPhoto and download to my desktop so they are easy to find.

Wow -- I managed to resize the photos and get them on here. Cool! Anyway, now you can see why we are so doubtful. ?!?!?! I called my vet and hopefully they can work us in this week. I did a due date calendar today for her also and it said she would not be due until Friday if she took on the first tie. So...humph. I am going to call and talk to my vet.

You can post pictures from a Mac . I am using mine when I have pictures to post .

She doesn't have to get big. But she doesn't look pregnant. Those folds in her skin could be caused by milk production. But she doesn't have to be pregnant to have milk. Both my girls produce milk when the other gives birth. Weird I know, but they are close and take care of each others babies.

If she is pregnant, you should be able to feel something. Some movement. I would do like everyone else is saying invest the $100 and have her x-rayed. It will put your mind at ease and if she is pregnant you will be able to see if she can give birth to it/them.

I agree that from those photos, she doesn't look pregnant at all. I would still definitely take her in to the vet, just in case. My vet is only $65 for one x-ray. :)
