The piebald effect has been observed and studied in dogs, horses, pigs and mice. There's probably other species but you get the idea that it's a well known genetic trait.

Well, what does that have to do with anything. People and (white animals) are two different things. The boxer went blind/deaf at 3 and the maltese wasn't very old, an 8 year old dog is not the same age as an 80 year old woman:rolleyes: My mom is almost 83 and she can hear fine:confused:

Maybe some of the partis that have a lot of white and are fine now, will be deaf when theyr'e just a few years old(that's what I'm talking about

You shouldn't say we are ALL messing with Gods creation. I'm not nor are a lot of other people that don't breed.

what about Lethal White in Paint/Pinto horses ? Was told once it was thought to be caused by a reccessive gene

I thought this thread was about Partis, Not fortune telling on if or when a dog will be born blind or deaf. And now they are discussing horses??? Geeeesh there are blind and deaf dogs born in every breed, even cats and horses.

Lethal white is cause by breeding 2 overo pinto horses together. You can breed other spotting patterns together like sabino to overo, tobiano to overo or splash white to overo without the problem of producing lethal white ... it's the overo to overo crosses that can produce lethal whites (25% chance). Unfortunately, you can have a horse who looks to be solid colored but are in fact minimally marked overos.

There is a test to determine if a horse carries the Lethal White gene, so many horse breeders who breed pintos will have their horses tested for the LWO (Lethal White Overo) gene or they will avoid breeding overo to overo all together.

Well, when you talk about Partis, you're talking about a dog with the piebald gene so not sure why you commented that way. Most everything posted has been factual even if you see it as fortune telling. No one here has posted that something will happen, only that it can and does happen with some piebalds. Maybe we need a thread about partis, only leave out the facts?? And yes, horses, pigs, and even mice are at least indirectly related to the discussion.

Factual based on the other breeds that have been discussed, but pure speculation on the parti. Quite honestly, there have been facts offered within this thread from those of us that own and/or breed the parti, but yet this has been dismissed.

I'm concerned that egos are getting the way on this post just by how the posts are typed. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it. Is anyone a geneticist? Is anyone a direct decendent of Johann Mendel?

Does anyone realize that a simple receptor from a gene being accepted can mess with the perfect STANDARD of the Yorkie? Do you realize that it can happen and it may have nothing to do with anything the breeder is doing? This receptor changes the trait and it will make it a recessie trait. The perfect yorkie now is soiled. *hanging head* This is a reality each time a bitch and sire are bred. We can educate ourselves as much as possible and hope that our knowledge and breeding practices work toward the good of the breed but believe it or not, some of us will miss.

To wash ones hands that since they are not breeding they have no responsiblity, I disagree. People purchase them, just as people purchase dogs from pet shops. Both need breeders. Now, I'm not saying each breeder is the same but we have to step back and take check of what we are doing here and our responsibilities. The fact is, we are all here and we have something in common - we have a dog (98% of us).

Yes it can and does, but it does not happen in all breeds, nor does it happen in all dogs in the breeds that it does affect.
