My sweet girl is due TODAY Hi ya'll, I just started on here. I read some of the past forums regarding yorkie births. My yorkie, Abbey, is due today, day 63. I am very surprised that she didn't get any bigger than she has but her teats are bigger, getting milk, and wax on the ends. Also, i've felt movement. I hope for 2 babies but can't imagine any more than 1. I checked her temp. yesterday and it was around 99.1. she hasn't started panting or scratching her bed. Any advice?? thanks, todd jordan |
63 days is the gestation period it could go slightly longer. My bridgette was 2 days late. Just like I was a week late with my daughter. Her body will tell her when it's time. If she hasn't gone into labor within about 2-3 days I suggest consulting your vet. The teats should really get more than a couple of drops until right after birth. Eating the placentas is what stimulates the teats to produce milk for the puppies. Has she started nesting yet? I found that they will NOT deliver if there is a lot of commotion going on. Like my Bridgette I sat by her side for two days straight. I finally got up to go eat lunch one day (and left her alone) when I went back to check on her she already had the first one out. They want to be in a quiet safe area they know their puppies will be ok. Turn down the lights, turn off any loud noises, TV, raido, etc. Put kids to bed and relax. Give her some breathing space and it will most likely happen faster. When her temp. gets to about 96-98 she'll be within 24hrs of delivery. Check her temp. about every 2-3 hrs. Keep me posted and make sure you take lots of photos and record all their info. weight, time of birth, etc. GOOD LUCK! |
Oh and my Bridgette is 6.5 lbs and the sire was 4.5 lbs and she has three puppies. There very well could be 2 in there. I even know someone who's 7 lb yorkie had 5 puppies. 5!!!!!! |
How big is she? Has she had an xray? I wish you lots of luck!! Keep us updated. |
she is a little bigger than normal but not a lot. i guess she just carries it well?? no on the xray, i'm kicking myself in the butt now wishing i would have done it. if she doesn't have them today, i will take her first thing monday morning for an xray and see whats going on. i could really feel a puppy moving last night. and she was glued to me last night and then went into her whelping box and layed for an hour or so. still no contractions. went to bed around 230am. now she is back in the box laying down, still no panting, she does seem tired tho. thanks, todd |
The vet we used to use, has a website, he said anywhere from 5 days early(with 62 days usually being the "day") to 5 days late is normal |

was gonna take temp last night but she seemed so pitiful i couldn't do it to her. i might go and try it in a few minutes. mom is here with me and has some experience with delivers. she said she is draining some and thinks it should be today. |
Yeah!! A puppy watch!! Keep us posted! Good luck and a safe whelping!:);):D |
still nothing really to report. i was gonna take her temp just now and she had messed herself. so i cleaned her up and couldn't put her thru the anal probing. she just sad and pitiful. and looking at me saying "what did you do to me" |
thanks for all the info and kind words. after re-reading i'm gonna take her temp in a few minutes and then leave her alone for awhile. todd |
temp is 98.5. and we have contractions..... yeaaaa. they were 7 seconds apart, then she rests some and then started again. keep fingers crossed. she also have the chills and is shivering a lot. |
Sounds like she is in labor. Good luck with the whelping and if you need any help, I will be here and am glad to help all I can from here. Just let me know |
Sounds like puppies will be here tonight! Sending prayers for a safe whelp. Good luck to you and the little momma. |
Thanks for the luck for me too. on my this is hard on both of us. well baby #1 ITS A BOY. and boy did it come out flying. she stood up to turn around and bam he came a flying out. not sure of the weight yet will wait till its all over. shes doing such a great job cleaning and etc. gotta run, hopefully we have at least one more and a girl. |
the baby is still attached to placenta and it has not come out yet. should i cut it? she hasn't chewed it and it seems to be pulling some on the little fellas tummy. |
Make sure and clear it all from his face and use dental floss to wrap around the cord about 1/2 inch from the baby. Then cut on the OTHER side of the tie. Do you have a bulb syringe? if so use it to clear his throat and nose then place him on mommy to try to get him to nurse until she is ready to deliver the next. Then wrap him in a warm towel and place him in a laundry basket while she delivers the next one. |
I just want to understand what is happening. Are you saying the placenta is inside and the baby outside? If so you can use some hemostats to clamp onto the cord before you tie and cut it. tie 1/2 inch from baby and place the hemostats about 1 inch from baby, then cut in between and leave the hemostats in place. It will help keep the placenta from going back inside. She should deliver it on her own |
If it DOES slip back inside, don't worry about it for the time being. just make sure to count the placentas and make sure each has been delivered when she is done. |
I see you are not online. I hope all is well. Please update when you can |
We cut it and still haven't seen the placenta come out. And no more babies either. Its been 2 hours since the first one. I plan to take them to vet in the morning to have tail docked and have vet check them both. do they dock tail that soon? and du claws, should i have him take them off too? i'll try and get a picture on here tomorrow, getting ready for bed. she is being protective of him and don't want to stress her out any more. |
I am not sure if you should wait until morning to go to the vet. A retained placenta could cause her major problems. If she hasn't passed the placenta yet, she will need a shot to help her expell it. Tomorrow is way too soon to have the tail docked and the dew claws removed (yes they do need to be removed) They should be done between 3-5 days depending on the weight of the puppy. Smaller puppies sometimes it is better to wait until 4-5 days. BTW, it is still possible that she has more babies in there. You need to keep a CLOSE watch on her tonight. especially if she shows any signs of distress. I don't think I would be going to sleep until I was SURE she is done and that the placentas have been passed too. |
My vet had me wait until my puppies were 5 days old to remove the dew claws and dock the tails. He said before that time they can bleed too much. It was also a very very hard thing for me to do when I did it. I dropped them off and sat in my car with Bridgette (momma) until they called me in so it wouldn't stress me or Bridgette out. As soon as we came back in they were all done dew claws gone and little nubs sewn up. They were just scrambling looking for momma to feed them. I still had nightmares for like 2 nights before about the terrible pain these poor babies would have to go through. But it wasn't that bad, as soon as momma came back in they had forgotten all about it. Good Luck to you. Are you going to keep the puppy? |
Did you call the Vet or did she finally pass the placenta? Birthing is sure stressful isn't it. When it's over for them I'm feel as if I gave birth myself. Make sure you keep little mother healthy. Good Luck to all of you. |
I will also wait in the car when the tails are being docked, no need for more trauma to any of us. I am not 100% sure if the placenta was passed or not. I tried to keep my eyes on her at all time but... She seemed ok, said a few prayers and went to sleep. got up a few times to check on them, mom was awake each time licking baby. Going to vet now to make sure it did come out and make sure all is ok. As for keeping the puppy, I pretty sure that i will have to keep him. I was hoping for at least 2, more for my mom, who had the stud/daddy and one for me. But she wants a girl so. She said that she will wait for the next litter. I am not really sure if i can put her through it again. But im sure that might change after a few days. thanks for all advice, support and help. |
Congrats on ur little boy!! Let us know what vet says.:) |
Make sure to tell the vet that you didn't see the placenta !! A retained one will make your female very, very , very sick !! I wouldn't dock until day 3. congrats |

well back from vet (from this morning) and back from work. the little family back at home. the vet gave her a shot and had my parnter (he took her this morning because i had to go in work early) take her outside to empty her "full" bladder. and then gave her another shot. and even though i said NOT to dock and de-dew claw him yet the vet did so and he is doing good but i got onto him. abbey is doing a super job and i'm so proud of her. |
