the baby is still attached to placenta and it has not come out yet. should i cut it? she hasn't chewed it and it seems to be pulling some on the little fellas tummy. |
Make sure and clear it all from his face and use dental floss to wrap around the cord about 1/2 inch from the baby. Then cut on the OTHER side of the tie. Do you have a bulb syringe? if so use it to clear his throat and nose then place him on mommy to try to get him to nurse until she is ready to deliver the next. Then wrap him in a warm towel and place him in a laundry basket while she delivers the next one. |
I just want to understand what is happening. Are you saying the placenta is inside and the baby outside? If so you can use some hemostats to clamp onto the cord before you tie and cut it. tie 1/2 inch from baby and place the hemostats about 1 inch from baby, then cut in between and leave the hemostats in place. It will help keep the placenta from going back inside. She should deliver it on her own |
If it DOES slip back inside, don't worry about it for the time being. just make sure to count the placentas and make sure each has been delivered when she is done. |
I see you are not online. I hope all is well. Please update when you can |
We cut it and still haven't seen the placenta come out. And no more babies either. Its been 2 hours since the first one. I plan to take them to vet in the morning to have tail docked and have vet check them both. do they dock tail that soon? and du claws, should i have him take them off too? i'll try and get a picture on here tomorrow, getting ready for bed. she is being protective of him and don't want to stress her out any more. |
I am not sure if you should wait until morning to go to the vet. A retained placenta could cause her major problems. If she hasn't passed the placenta yet, she will need a shot to help her expell it. Tomorrow is way too soon to have the tail docked and the dew claws removed (yes they do need to be removed) They should be done between 3-5 days depending on the weight of the puppy. Smaller puppies sometimes it is better to wait until 4-5 days. BTW, it is still possible that she has more babies in there. You need to keep a CLOSE watch on her tonight. especially if she shows any signs of distress. I don't think I would be going to sleep until I was SURE she is done and that the placentas have been passed too. |
My vet had me wait until my puppies were 5 days old to remove the dew claws and dock the tails. He said before that time they can bleed too much. It was also a very very hard thing for me to do when I did it. I dropped them off and sat in my car with Bridgette (momma) until they called me in so it wouldn't stress me or Bridgette out. As soon as we came back in they were all done dew claws gone and little nubs sewn up. They were just scrambling looking for momma to feed them. I still had nightmares for like 2 nights before about the terrible pain these poor babies would have to go through. But it wasn't that bad, as soon as momma came back in they had forgotten all about it. Good Luck to you. Are you going to keep the puppy? |
Did you call the Vet or did she finally pass the placenta? Birthing is sure stressful isn't it. When it's over for them I'm feel as if I gave birth myself. Make sure you keep little mother healthy. Good Luck to all of you. |
I will also wait in the car when the tails are being docked, no need for more trauma to any of us. I am not 100% sure if the placenta was passed or not. I tried to keep my eyes on her at all time but... She seemed ok, said a few prayers and went to sleep. got up a few times to check on them, mom was awake each time licking baby. Going to vet now to make sure it did come out and make sure all is ok. As for keeping the puppy, I pretty sure that i will have to keep him. I was hoping for at least 2, more for my mom, who had the stud/daddy and one for me. But she wants a girl so. She said that she will wait for the next litter. I am not really sure if i can put her through it again. But im sure that might change after a few days. thanks for all advice, support and help. |
Congrats on ur little boy!! Let us know what vet says.:) |
Make sure to tell the vet that you didn't see the placenta !! A retained one will make your female very, very , very sick !! I wouldn't dock until day 3. congrats |

well back from vet (from this morning) and back from work. the little family back at home. the vet gave her a shot and had my parnter (he took her this morning because i had to go in work early) take her outside to empty her "full" bladder. and then gave her another shot. and even though i said NOT to dock and de-dew claw him yet the vet did so and he is doing good but i got onto him. abbey is doing a super job and i'm so proud of her. |
