Oh no...I am so scared... I have a litter of 3 female pups...they are about 6 1/2 weeks old and they are just getting to stage where they start to fight and play a lot. The biggest girl in the litter I heard crying this morning when I was getting their food mixture ready. They are still nursing but mom is out during the day. I ran in to see what was going on and when I picked her up I immediately noticed that her little eye had a puncture wound in it. They are in a little mesh puppy playpen with no sharp edges, so I can only assume one of her sisters was playing and scratched or bit her eye. I rushed her to the vet and by the time I had gotten there her eye was almost entirely a cloudy blue color. She stopped crying but I could tell she was in a lot of pain. They gave me some gentle antibiotic eye drops and they want her to come back in first thing Monday morning to see if it's improving after being treated for a couple of days. If it hasn't improved at all then she will have to have surgery to either try and stitch up the eye and correct the problem, or take the eye out completely. They told me to keep my fingers crossed...it really just depends on how deep the wound is. I feel terrible for this poor little baby girl, she is only 6 1/2 weeks old. If she is in pain they would want to do the surgery ASAP...but she is only 1 lb, 4 ounces...so what are the chances she would even make it out of the anesthesia???? I know there's nothing I could've done different, they are always kept safe and sound and puppy proofed, nails clipped short and everything...but I still feel terrible. Does anybody have experience putting a puppy that young and that small under anesthesia?? I am so scared for her...I'm praying it's not that deep the antibiotics start to help over the weekend. Poor baby...:( |
Oh no.. that poor baby. I hope she gets better soon. |
oh my nicki i am so sorry i have never heard of such happening i will pray for you little baby that all turns out well and she will need no surgery |
Oh my goodness.............poor baby girl. I am so sorry this has happened to her and to you and I will say some prayers and keep my fingers crossed that the eye begins to heal and will NOT need the surgery. Are you able to put her back with her littermates? Do you need to cover the eye to protect it? |
A friend's biewer punctured a hole in her cornea. She had to put drops in her eyes every 4 hours around the clock. Puppy was not allowed to play or rough house...she was crated for a month....literally....however it saved her sight and the eye. Reese punctured his eye as a pup....not the cornea...with medication...it healed fine. My vet told me as long as it's not the cornea...eyes heal themselves very well. Good luck with baby pup. |
Oh no! Im so sorry Nicki that this has happened to your little pup. I will say a prayer for her tonight that her eye will heal without the need for surgery at all! God Bless!:) Hugs from Brooklyn! |
Oh no! I'm so sorry! We're keeping your little one in our prayers.:( |
Nikki I am sorry to hear about your little one. I will pray for a full recovery! |
Nicki I am sorry to be reading this. Hopefully the puppy will have a full recovery. I would try to keep the puppies separate if possible. |
Oh no Nicki, I havn't had this happen either but I have been told the ey is the fastest healing, so maybe with the drops it will improve and she will not need the surgery. Poor baby, she will be in my prayers. |

This is just terrible...I feel like crying all night...I am just hoping that these drops work wonders and it's not that deep. Maybe she'll have a chance to keep that little eye. I would hate for her to have to have surgery so little, but if she's in pain then clearly I don't have any other choice. Keep her in your thoughts and thank you everyone for your kind words...let's hope she improves this weekend and it looks better when we go back on Monday. |
2 Attachment(s) I just fed her...she ate well thank goodness. She is a really sweet little girl and she gives great kisses...:D I am just worried about that little eye...:( Here are some pictures I just took of it...you can't really see the puncture wound but it's sort of at the top...you can see the cloudy blue color that it has become...and she still has a little of the green eye stain they used at the vet...:( My poor baby...:( |
1 Attachment(s) And I know you can't tell much from this picture because she still has the typical blue puppy eye shine...but you can see the brown around the edges and that both eyes look the same...this was taken only yesterday before it happened...I think she was in so much pain it even made her little ears go back down...:( |
Oh what a sweet baby. I hope that she will be okay and not need surgery. :( |
Poor baby! I am so sorry to hear this! Hope the drops do the trick and she won't need surgery. Hugs. |
Poor little girl!! I pray she gets better and doesn't need surgery. But on an encouraging note, I used to have pet rats and was accidently given 1 male and 1 female when I asked for two females. They ended up having babies and I didn't have the heart to get rid of one of the parents because I loved them. So I had my male neutered. Although he was a large rat, he was MUCH smaller than a 6 week old yorkie pup and he pulled out of the anesthesia like a trooper. I'm sure this little girl will come out of anesthesia just fine if she unfortunately has to go under. |
Nikki, I had a similar situation years ago with one of my puppies. The eye looked much the same as the pic. She had anesthetic drops, prednisone drops and antibiotic oint. that I had to rotate every 1-2 hours. Her eye cleared up fine and she is an adult with 2 good eyes. As for surgery at that age--had to do that too. I had a little female in my second litter many years ago and she developed a HUGE femoral hernia. I was so concerned about strangulation that I insisted one of the most experienced vets in the practice do her surgery. She recovered completely and was a happy healthy girl in about 3 days... These babies are very resilient...the eye turns that color when it gets traumatized..seems that is part of how it handles the hurt. Good luck with her and the rest of the younguns.. |
Nicki, I'm so sorry! I know you're worried to pieces. She's still beautiful and will continue to be so. I hope everything turns out okay and she's not in pain anymore. I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed that she wont need surgery. |
She's so cute! A prayer for her & you. |
That happened to my adult Shih Tzu, Joe, earlier this year. His eye looked far worse. You could see a perfectly round circle that was the wound (We think the neighbor shot him with a bb when he was in the back yard) and his whole eye was swollen and completely clouded over. The whites of his eye was dark red. Antibiotic drops cleared it up, his vision is fine, and I thought for sure he would lose it!! I think your baby will be fine. You caught it early and you're treating it. |
Nicki, I have never dealt with eye injuries so I am so help there but I am praying that she makes a speedy recovery. |
Thank you everyone, she seems in much better spirits today and the bottom of the eye is turning dark brown again, so hopefully that's a good thing. She hates these drops, I don't blame her...but she lets me do it without a fight. I think she knows they're helping her, she is such a sweet little girl. I like the story about the little rats, and the tiny girl who had to go through surgery so small...that makes me feel a little better in case she DID have to have it...but I'm really hoping the antibiotics do the trick. |
I hope your little one doesn't have to have surgery, if it makes you feel better after Tarra shattered her elbow and I had to crate her for 9 weeks, the first few days where not easy but then she adjusted and did fine. It about killed me to do it, cause I don't like crates either, but to save her leg from limping the rest of her life I did it, and it does go faster than you think. I will be prayer for her Nikki and you too!:( |
Nicki -- I am so sorry to hear about your little one's eye injury. Eyes are amazing organs. They are so self healing. Emmitt scratched his cornea when he was a pup - it was a fairly deep scratch and I was presented with the eye ointment treatment first and if that didn't work then surgery. Fortunately for us the antibiotic cream worked. One thing my vet told me to look for was blood vessels working their way down to the eye from above. That is a GOOD thing even though it looks horrible 'cause those blood vessels promote healing. The surgery step for us would have been to stitch the eye lid (was it the second or third?) closed so that the eye would be protected and could heal. I will keep this sweet baby in my thoughts and prayers.... and I'll be looking for updates. Emmitt was closer to 1 1/2 - 2 lbs. when he had his eye injury - he is now a whopping 3.5 lbs. full grown and he has NO visible scar tissue. |
Oh poor baby. My first Yorkie, tried to get under a chain link fence and ulcerated his eye, and the vet gave him ointment and drops to numb his eye. The vet said if it didn't heal he would have to go to a specialist. But it healed up and pretty quickly. I will keep your baby in my prayers. |
Delilah, Jasmine and I are so sad to hear this! We all send great big hugs and get well wishes. This makes me want to cry, Nicki! Let us know how the baby is doing. We are praying, and crossing fingers and toes as well. Hugs. |
Poor baby. I hope her eye heals completely. :( |
Nicki I would be worried about her having surgery so tiny also. She looks like such a sweetie. Give her puppy kisses on the nose for me ! Prayers that her lil eye heals. |
I don't want to speak too soon but I THINK it is getting better...there are blood vessels at the top and at the bottom the brown is back. I am continuing to hope and pray for my little girl...I will find out for sure tomorrow. Thank you again for your prayers and support! :hands: |
