Oh no...I am so scared... I have a litter of 3 female pups...they are about 6 1/2 weeks old and they are just getting to stage where they start to fight and play a lot. The biggest girl in the litter I heard crying this morning when I was getting their food mixture ready. They are still nursing but mom is out during the day. I ran in to see what was going on and when I picked her up I immediately noticed that her little eye had a puncture wound in it. They are in a little mesh puppy playpen with no sharp edges, so I can only assume one of her sisters was playing and scratched or bit her eye. I rushed her to the vet and by the time I had gotten there her eye was almost entirely a cloudy blue color. She stopped crying but I could tell she was in a lot of pain. They gave me some gentle antibiotic eye drops and they want her to come back in first thing Monday morning to see if it's improving after being treated for a couple of days. If it hasn't improved at all then she will have to have surgery to either try and stitch up the eye and correct the problem, or take the eye out completely. They told me to keep my fingers crossed...it really just depends on how deep the wound is. I feel terrible for this poor little baby girl, she is only 6 1/2 weeks old. If she is in pain they would want to do the surgery ASAP...but she is only 1 lb, 4 ounces...so what are the chances she would even make it out of the anesthesia???? I know there's nothing I could've done different, they are always kept safe and sound and puppy proofed, nails clipped short and everything...but I still feel terrible. Does anybody have experience putting a puppy that young and that small under anesthesia?? I am so scared for her...I'm praying it's not that deep the antibiotics start to help over the weekend. Poor baby...:( |
Oh no.. that poor baby. I hope she gets better soon. |
oh my nicki i am so sorry i have never heard of such happening i will pray for you little baby that all turns out well and she will need no surgery |
Oh my goodness.............poor baby girl. I am so sorry this has happened to her and to you and I will say some prayers and keep my fingers crossed that the eye begins to heal and will NOT need the surgery. Are you able to put her back with her littermates? Do you need to cover the eye to protect it? |
A friend's biewer punctured a hole in her cornea. She had to put drops in her eyes every 4 hours around the clock. Puppy was not allowed to play or rough house...she was crated for a month....literally....however it saved her sight and the eye. Reese punctured his eye as a pup....not the cornea...with medication...it healed fine. My vet told me as long as it's not the cornea...eyes heal themselves very well. Good luck with baby pup. |
Oh no! Im so sorry Nicki that this has happened to your little pup. I will say a prayer for her tonight that her eye will heal without the need for surgery at all! God Bless!:) Hugs from Brooklyn! |
Oh no! I'm so sorry! We're keeping your little one in our prayers.:( |
Nikki I am sorry to hear about your little one. I will pray for a full recovery! |
Nicki I am sorry to be reading this. Hopefully the puppy will have a full recovery. I would try to keep the puppies separate if possible. |
Oh no Nicki, I havn't had this happen either but I have been told the ey is the fastest healing, so maybe with the drops it will improve and she will not need the surgery. Poor baby, she will be in my prayers. |

This is just terrible...I feel like crying all night...I am just hoping that these drops work wonders and it's not that deep. Maybe she'll have a chance to keep that little eye. I would hate for her to have to have surgery so little, but if she's in pain then clearly I don't have any other choice. Keep her in your thoughts and thank you everyone for your kind words...let's hope she improves this weekend and it looks better when we go back on Monday. |
2 Attachment(s) I just fed her...she ate well thank goodness. She is a really sweet little girl and she gives great kisses...:D I am just worried about that little eye...:( Here are some pictures I just took of it...you can't really see the puncture wound but it's sort of at the top...you can see the cloudy blue color that it has become...and she still has a little of the green eye stain they used at the vet...:( My poor baby...:( |
1 Attachment(s) And I know you can't tell much from this picture because she still has the typical blue puppy eye shine...but you can see the brown around the edges and that both eyes look the same...this was taken only yesterday before it happened...I think she was in so much pain it even made her little ears go back down...:( |
Oh what a sweet baby. I hope that she will be okay and not need surgery. :( |
Poor baby! I am so sorry to hear this! Hope the drops do the trick and she won\'t need surgery. Hugs. |
