Need Whelping help!! I have a girl friend that has a Chi and she had 2 puppies last night. Her husband was home with her and all went well. She came home tonight and she feels something else in her tummy and said that it moved, so she thinks it is another puppy. It has been almost 24 hours since the last puppy. I told her to take her to the vet and she said that the last time it took almost 24 hours for her to have the puppy. What do you guys suggest. I know many of you have dealt with this and I never have but knew you guys might be able to help me as to what to tell her to do. She is taking her temp now and the puppy inside is moving. |

That was my suggestion also, she said that the mom was doing a lot of licking but no pushing, I even found a vet that was 2 hours away that would see her, but with her living pretty far from everything, she said she was going to wait for a little longer and see if she pushed. She just took temp and it is 101. |
I have never dealt with this in whelping puppies. I've never heard of a puppy being born more then 24 hours later I would take her to the vets. If this has happened before to her..She may be comfortable waiting. Boy I wouldn't be.I'm a worry wart Hope everything goes well. :) Please let us know !!! |
I am on the phone with her now, she is going to call the vet right now. |
I am by far not expert in breeding by any means, but my gut instincts say she should really take her to the vet. Just because last time her whelp happened that way, does not mean that it will happen that way this time, IMO. For the health and care for that little momma and her baby, she should take her to the vet. We'll be sending puppy/momma prayers your way and be sure to let us know how they do. Good luck to your friend and all her babies! |

If that was me I would have been on the way to the vet already. What are people thinking??? I panic enough with out having this to worry about. I know she said that the last litter took over 24 hours to deliver all the babies, but since it has been almost 24 hours since the last baby was born, that worries me. |
I would get that girl to the vet asap. it is good if she can feel it moving.. that means it is still alive.. but I certainly would have her in there as soon as she can. I would not wait over 2-3 hours much less 24 hours |
Thanks everyone!! I am waiting for her to call back, she is on the phone with the vet so I know they are going to tell her to bring her in. |
Sonya I feel the same way. I have had a whelping take over 8 hours. But the puppies kept moving down and there wasnt a huge gap in time. This was with 7 puppies. Then Nala had 8 puppies and it took 7 hours total. This is just too long of a gap between puppies...2-3 hours and I would have already been on my way to the vets. It is good that the puppy is still moving. Keep us posted !! |
Yeah, I should have put this in my first post. You said the baby was still moving, but that doesn't mean that it's not stressed and that can cause all kinds of problems. There's a reason its not coming out, and at this point, every minute counts, for both their sakes. |

I used to work at a vet's office about 2 years ago. You should not wait more than two hours between puppies. This is extremely dangerous not only for the puppy but for the Mom as well. We got a man that brought in his dachshund that had been pushing for hours and couldn't get any out...the Mom was so weak that she ended up dieing during the C-section. Luckily the puppies did make it..but they had no mother and had to be bottle fed. They do have a shot of Oxytocin vets can give to a dog to make her contractions stronger...if that doesn't work, a C-section probably would be a GREAT idea... Kel |
I had a puppy unable to be delivered because it's chin was caught in the mother's cervix bone. The hind legs were presented, but he vet had to emergency deliver by inserting a long tube attached to a tube filled lubricant, that and giving the mother a POP shot so she'd bare down harder. |
We are on our way to the vet's office. She has to come by my house to get there so I am going with her. I will post update when we get back. Keep fingers crossed that all will be well. |
I've never heard of this before, but it seems like the uterus would have contracted by now. How could the baby get out now? And if Mom is relaxing and nursing, isn't labor over? I would already have been at the vet's if it were one of my girls. Waiting can only put Mom and the unborn pup in real danger. I hope everything turns out well. How scary this must be. |
Puppy prayers ~Hope the puppy and Mama are ok. Will check first thing in the morning |

I'm glad she decided to go to the vet and I'm very glad you are going with her!:thumbup: I'll be looking in the morning for an update and Ihope everything is okay with mommy and the puppy; they must really be exhausted by now.:( I'm keeping my fingers crossed! |
I just got home.... There was 1 big puppy in her still, they tried the shots and mom pushed but no baby. After 5 hours of letting her try to deliver the pup, they have now decided to do a c-section. We still do not know if the puppy is alive or not. They had an emergency case come in so they said to go ahead and go and they would call as soon as they did it. My girlfriend had to get back home since her hubby had to go to work and there was no one to watch their daughter. So far the bill was $1700 and that will include the c-section and spay. I am going to lay down for a little while but as soon as I get the call on what is going on, I will post it. There is still a slim chance that the pup is still alive. |
Awww thats too bad :( I hope the puppy made it. Update us and let us know how Mama and puppy are doing |
WOW! What a thread....24 hours between pups???? I've only had one litter so far. The last pup born went just a little over two hours since the last and I was a nervous wreck. My female was not having contractions anymore that I could see, so we were on the phone with, then off to the e-vet ASAP at just over the two hours. They did an xray and the pup was just not moving down into the birth canal...they gave her a shot of oxytocin and the pup was born alive and well shortly after. WHEW! Hope your friend did not wait to long. I will say a prayer that mama and baby get through this okay and I will check back later for an update. Hugs to you for being there for her and to your friend for the stressful night she had. |
Update... They still have not done the c-section yet!!!! If there was a chance that the puppy was still alive, I doubt it is anymore. I can not believe that they are still waiting. We left at 5 this morning and she was getting prepped for surgery, at 8:45 she still has not had it and was told it would be in about 30 more minutes. I would have been SCREAMING by now. |
Unbelievable....I am in shock here !!!!! If that poor little puppy stood a chance I'm sure it doesnt now. I have never heard of such a thing. I would be furious at that vet !!! |
C-Section was done...there was a little girl that is now in heaven. She apparently passed away long before labor even started because she was already severely deformed. So at least we know that the wait did not kill her. Mom is fine and the 2 baby boy's are doing wonderful. They will get to come home today and mom has been SPAYED!!!! I think the vet felt that the pup had already been gone as to why they keep putting it off, but darn....they could have done it a lot sooner. Thanks everyone....it really helped her knowing that others were thinking of her and helping her out. Now if nap time would get here soon, I would be okay also. :D |

OMG I am in shock too! Is there another er vet anywhere nearby?? Geez, I think this vet is totally irrespomsible. Sorry, but that is outrageous! Just read the update.. sorry about the last baby.. but I still think that the vet is irresponsible. If he felt the baby was alreaDY GONE.. HE SHOULD HAVE DONE THE C-SECTIOM RIGHT AWAY.. THAT CAnnot be good for the mother.. he could have lost BOTH of them. |
She did have the option of taking the dog when we left at 5 this morning to her regular vet, but they were prepping her for surgery so we all thought it would have been done as soon as we left. If she would have know that they were going to wait even longer, we would have taken her to my vet who opened at 7:30 and he would have had her in by 8. Her husband is probably going to be the one to pick her up this afternoon and I am sure he will give them a piece of his mind. Then again, I won't know until she tells me. I am just glad that mom and the 2 babies are fine and not expected to have any problems for this. |
Its odd that she felt it kicking...Isnt it? This is a first for me.... Still wonder why the vet didnt do the C-section right away :( I\'m glad its done..and Mama is ok And I\'m so glad the first 2 are ok Get some rest...What a night you\'ve had...and they\'re not even your puppies !! |
