Unable to Tie Hi all, I have been searching all over the net trying to find an answer to this problem but have not had any luck but came across this site and hope someone has heard of this..... I'm new to breeding yorkies but have spent the last year and half reading all I could to educate myself. My baby girl comes from champion lines - her sire is a champion among others and she has been health tested. This is her second heat and she is a year and a half old and a lean girl at 5.2 lbs. She went into heat recently and on the 9th day I brought her to the studs house. He has been proven with a few litters already and is about a year and a half old also champion sired and health tested and 3.5lbs. So here's my problem. Despite multiple tries over the past few days -since Thursday, they only were able to tie one time. They both were very interested and tried and tried but never seemed able to "connect". Has anyone experienced this problem and have any idea what could be the issue? Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm stumped.:( |

Don't laugh, but sometimes you have to forget all dignity and lay on the floor beside them to see what the problem is. If he is aroused sufficiently, then it could be positional. Hence the floor-laying. Sometimes a folded towel for him to stand on helps. I keep both the male and female in harnesses so that I have a "handle" on them and can control their position and give the boy a lift if he needs it. Finally, I did have a breeding female who had a blockage and could not be bred. PM me if I can help any further. Good luck. |
I had one outside tie produce a litter of 3 once. Sometimes 1 is all you need. |
If your male will tolerate your help you can hold the female facing you with one hand under her jaw and the other hand under her belly with your fore finger and middle finger on each side of her vulva. You will be able to feel the penetration and you will notice a difference in the thrusting motion of the male as he attempts to set the bulb. At this point you can hold him in from behind and assist in getting the tie. Holding her from underneath by the hips and pressing him from behind while giving him enough freedom to thrust will normally get the tie completed. This will also help protect the male from an excitable female. |
We just went through a difficult mating. The male couldn't seem to 'find the mark'. After thinking about it, we took the females hair on her haunches and banded it away from her rear. With a 'clear shot', the male was able to connect easily. There had been 3 unsuccessful tries before doing this (tying the hair back). You know, those guys don't have fingers to clear the path :D. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
I think it can be an issue of getting the correct angle. Regardless of the height of the bitch, one of my boys must have his 2 stacked rubber mats (they are those mats that hook together like puzzle parts for kids play areas) plus a throw rug. I also use KY jelly on the exterior only of the bitch, that way if he gets close he will slip in (sorry for the description). He recently bred two bitches that are at leat an inch different in height but he need the same mats/rug for both, I think due to the angle of the vagina. Also if you are lucky he will allow his owner to help position him while you hold her. If I did not hold my girls I'd never have puppies, they can be so flirty and wild. |

:thumbup: As long as the male is aroused and the female flags for him, I'd keep trying. |
She's continuing to flag and stand for him today. Very interested - both of them are but still no luck. We tried the KY jelly, we've tried a towel underneath him at different heights. I'm just so discouraged. So many people don't even want their dogs to get be bred and they just get together by accident yet with all this planning.... but who knows. They did tie once so I guess it's still possible. Thank you to all of you for your suggestions. I think we will continue to try as long as they are both interested but any other suggestions are welcome! |
You have been given very good advice and I really have nothing else to offer. I have also done all these things and have even used vaseline on the bitch once but the KY Jelly works the same way. You probably will have babies even with one tie so don't give up hope. |
Just a warning to Be very careful what kind of lubricant you use!..It has to be one that will not kill the sperm...Read the tube! |
Have you had your vet to check her to make sure she doesn't have a stricture? AI could be done. I would have her checked to make sure she doesn't have a stricture, in case she does get pregnant you want to be aware of wether she can have the pups naturally or would need a CSection due to the stricture.. What is a stricture |

I really think you are worrying too much. You were able to get one tie so there is a good possibility that she will be pregnant. I would just wait and see the outcome of this breeding. Like I said before, sometimes the male just has a hard time getting the job done because of several different factors. I have had the same problem on a few occasions where we were only able to get one tie after many tries or just an outside tie and in those cases the female got pregnant and had puppies with no problems. Be sure to let us if she is pregnant. Best of luck to you. |
If you did manage a TIE then you are going to be OK now wether you have a pregnant girl or not, time will tell. I thought you are not able to get a tie, then I saw someone talking about an outside tie. Are you going to try her again to see if you can get a tie? Some girls are actually ready later in their cycle than others. Keep us posted Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |
I am having this problem right now and am new to Yorkie Breeding. I used to breed boxers. What is an outside tie. I have never heard of this? |
An outside tie is when then the male penetrates the female, knots up and is ejaculating but the males bulb is on the outside of the female but you are able to hold the male in place on the female so the penis does not slip out. Usually if a male knots up on the outside of the female his penis will slip out when he dismounts unless you are there to hold him in place. Females are able to get pregnant with an outside tie if you are able to hold them in place long enough. I have found that young and inexperienced males seem to do this more often than the experienced ones. |

Whoo hoo we had our 1st tie. BUt it only lasted about 1min. Is that normal. Our boxer were sometimes 15-20 min?? I'm new to breeding yorkies. I thought it would have been a bit longer. They both also first timers. DOes that make a difference? TX I would think any kind of lube would be good. Just as long as their is no spermacide. HJust have to read the label. |
tie Try for at least 3 mins...there are three fractions to the ejaculate..but one min can be enough. Hold his rear end against the bitch to prevent him from pulling back out for a few more minutes...and hold the bitch, arm around and under her belly..doing that, no one moves. |
Day 9, for the majority of Yorkies - is too early to breed. Also with a small stud it is unadvisable to let him do this all by himself as he can be injuries. The girl should be held, with the index and middle finger of one hand on each side of her vulva and the other hand holding her front leg. This way you can tell exactly where the stud is "hitting" and how firmly and make adjustments as needed. With a maiden girl - the male must "hit" her firmly in order to both enter the vulva and to break the hymen. When entrance has been made, I grab the male under the base of his tail and pull toward me in order to push him in farther and hold him there for a moment or so until the tie is accomplished. After that I just hold the girl and talk to both of them until it is over. (Sometimes up to an hour) It is a good idea to use a very experienced stubd with a maiden as an inexperienced one often doesn't have the aim and patience down yet.:) FYI - The girl isn't ready to be bred until her discharge has turned to straw color (or in some cases has stopped) and the vulva has begun to soften. The average day for my girls is from 12 to 14 days from start of color. If you do saliva slides - the ferning should be well on its way when the time to breed is right. Best of luck! Charlie |
