Yorkie stud service
 

To the breeders out there, I am considering breeding, but will not do my own yorkie breeding for about another 2 years. I have Luca Dean, a 5 month yorkie, who falls pretty well within the AKC standard as long as his hair becomes silky. How much is the usual fee for stud service -- I've heard a few hundred or the choice of pick of the litter. I want to raise AKC yorkies and maybe even show yorkies (again, later). Should I start off using Luca Dean as a stud and choose a few "picks of the litter," or approach it some other way?

I will be totally new at this and want to raise healthy yorkies (or make sure the dam's owners are raising healthy yorkies even if I don't breed myself for a few years ...). I also want yorkies that conform well to the AKC standard. How do you, as a breeder, make the decision to breed or not breed certain yorkies? Do you base it on heredity and how well the two you want to breed conform only, or are there other factors? Guess I've asked enough for one thread!!!

If 30 plus years carries any weight I will tell you how I decide. I use the standard as a guide. Since I did not understand the exact meaning of each trait in the beginning, I needed to go to shows and see what a breed quality Yorkie looked like...breed and show quality should be the same IMO. Second, the pedigree is vital. When you see CH. it does not always mean top quality..but it is a guideline. It only takes one generation of poor breeding to wreck a 5 gen. pedigree..so when people say their dog is from champion lines..and you see no champions in the first/second generation..then it is a pet pedigree for the most part IMO. Go back far enough and all Yorkies have champion blood somewhere...so I pay little attention to what people say..look at the pedigree, it speaks for itself.
Ask some reputable breeders to look at your male. Rarely, will anyone with a quality bitch give you a pick of the litter..why would they? Champion stud fees are very reasonable..$400/750..$750 (number one Yorkie). Even a very pet quality pup will sell for $800 and up..a nice pet will sell for $1200/1500..so why would a breeder give a very nice breed or show pup as pick of litter...you are looking at perhaps a $3000 &up pup..mighty steep stud fee, right?
The best advise I was ever given and the best advise I give for anyone who has a goal to breed or show a quality pup, is to buy the best bitch you can afford and take that bitch to the best champion you can afford..even champions produce more pets the show pups, so a pet bred to a pet will very rarely produce a show litter..or even a good breed quality litter...but everyones opinion of what is breed and show quality can differ.
Best wishes to you...I had to start somewhere and getting a good breedable bitch was the key to my goal of producing a champion bred by myself from my own line...long, hard road, with many people waiting to rip you off...sorry to say, but true.

Most of the breeders around here also show their dogs. They do not breed until their dog has won a championship. They also only breed their dog to a stud who also has won a championship. This is how they increase the odds that the puppies will adhere to the standard. They usually don't breed for money, but instead do it because they love the breed and strive to make it better. They are always hoping their next litter will have the perfect yorkie who could win best-in-show. If you are interested in showing yorkies, you could take this approach and only breed once your dog has won a championship.

Thanks Bentley's mom and Yorkierose for the advice. There is a show in my area in March, so maybe I can check that out to get a better feel of what a quality show dog looks and acts like. Ought to know what it is I am going to breed, huh?

Wish I found this board BEFORE I bought my Yorkie! I am from West Palm
