I was just talking to a breeder I know.. cannot call her all the time as she rescues, breeds and is always so busy..
I called her and she called me back.. I told her they were all doing well until the tail docking happened.. I believe since they were so stressed and in pain that they did not get enough.. she believes too...it was the tail docking that set them back...she also agreed that it was not as stressful when they were one day old when they use to do it.. I have really noticed a huge difference in waiting this 4 days.. so much crying and pain...anne | I have so nervous about this myself. I have 7 little girls, they had their tails docked Friday, just 3 days after being whelped. I gave all the girls from the get go, a small amount of karo syrup. I had bought a nurser but had little success. the syringe size I used was a 1 cc syringe or one for insulin. it was perfect. I just put some in between their gums and their lips, after gently prying their mouth open then after they could taste it they would try to suck on the syringe. I very slowly and gently expressed the syrup or newborn formula into their mouths. as long as I could see they they were sucking or licking on the syringe I felt safe expressing more into their mouths.
I too noticed Friday after getting their tails docked and I had other things to do I paid less attention to them all. I did not supplement them at all. Saturday I have cheer practice and was alway from them. Saturday evening I noticed my smallest puppy was not as big as the others now and the difference was almost 1 full ounce. I started pulling away the bigger pups and letting her nurse on the teats closest to her tail and then I gave her the puppy formula through the nurser. If I did not see her tummy bulging alittle or no increase in weight with weighing her. I then fed her about 1/2 to 1 cc with the syringe slowly. She weighs 4.6 oz now and all the other puppies weigh 6.5-7.6 oz. now. I have the heating pad on and sometimes the little heater above the whelping box to increase the temperature around the box . Hopefully then they won't be utilizing their metabolism to stay warm and use it to get strong. What has worked for me is no consolation for you right now. I pray everyone is healthy and your little girl gets stronger. |
