Hi Olive and welcome to YT...you can learn a lot here so don't be discouraged...people are very passionate about the breed and some can tend to come off a little "rough around the edges".
I would definitely get back with the breeder you got her from...if she's ethical and an experienced breeder, maybe you can use her as a mentor. There are many genetic tests, etc. that need to be done before you breed but first, you should now her exact weight as she is now. Has she had any vet visits since you've had her...they should have told you her weight or put it on her records which they usually provide to you.

Needless to say, and as many have mentioned in previous posts, there is a LOT of research that should be done before proceeding.

If so everyone is chewing her out for saying her female is a teacup. On the website of the breeder she bought from the breeder says that her yorkies are

Teacups up to $2500.00 Micro Teacup up to $3500.00.

So if she has no knowledge of the breed and the breeder she bought from told her that her puppy was a teacup then I guess that is why she thought her female was a teacup.

My mentor taught me to stick my thumb in the groove of the pelvic bone. If it fits in easily and you have a little wiggle room, she should be able to have normal sized puppies ok. If it contours to your thumb or you can't get your thumb in there at all, you probably shouldn't do it.



Can you explain this to me a little more, not quite getting it.

the word teacup is a swear word around here.. breeding a dog under 4 lbs
may kill the dog.. especially if bred with a larger stud.. lots of teacups are actually just malnourished puppies...most people dont know this... very small dogs are high risk for injuries due to size.. they are cute, but they must be special needs dogs.. 5 lbs is a size they say you can consider breeding.. under 5 lbs, the female should be a pet only and spayed.. i think that is the consensus among most good breeders.. i would be afraid to own a tiny... you can kill it by kicking or stepping on them by accident. 5-7 lbs is a good size in my opinion..:aimeeyork

I would not breed her if she is just over 4 lbs. I think that's too small. I have a male who is 4 1/2 lbs., and if he were female, I couldn't even imagine him having puppies! He's very tiny. I hope you will reconsider after reading the replies here.

You turn your dog on it's back. You put you finger on their lower tummy. Right above their "strawberry" as my hubby calls it if your finger fits flat between the two pelvic bones with some space on each side they are usually wide enough to carry babies. Just keep in mind just because they can have babies doesn't mean they should. My Malt is 4lbs and I found her way to small to even think about breeding her. God forbid if I lose her during birthing I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

I use to breed Rottweilers and even though they are much larger dogs I have lost a couple of pups in the litters and it is heartbreaking.

Welcome to Yt!

It's highly reccomended that your yorkie female be over 5 lbs to breed her. You could be taking big risk if you breed a tiny yorkie. I'm sure you love her and you don't want to risk her life.

Did you buy her to breed her? If the answer is yes, then you should have done more research before you bought her. If the answer is no, then please do not breed her at 4lbs.

Yep...very sad. I most worry about the decisions made after they leave here. This is another one of those 'was it rude or just blunt and honest' threads that always seem to end up running off all but the most thick-skinned newbie. I know that the word teacup has negative connotations but folks have to ease up some and kindly try to teach about it. A lot of new buyers only are excited thinking that they have something rare. Sadly it's only a sales ploy but they do get caught up in it.

I think that people really need to prepare their post and then sit and read it as though they were the folks on the receiving end so they can judge it better.

Many times I want to go off but I know it won't do any good. When you are judgemental, over bearing or nasty it only makes the person go on the defensive and any lesson you try to teach falls on deaf ears.

So please for the future everyone try to take it easy. Praying to god that this person while they are no longer members will read up on the web and get educated before they make any decisions.

I'm disappointed too. Some people do not realize that breeding is so difficult especially with the toy breeds. Several years ago, I remember asking my DIL why she didn't breed her two Maltese dogs. She was probably horrified that I asked such a stupid question, but was very kind and informative in her reply. Many people get a pet that's so darn cute and just want puppies from it. I hope we can learn there is a better way to persuade people that this is not a good idea.

I've been asked why I didnt breed mine - my answer is because I LOVE them - and second.... I AM NOT A BREEDER

people just don't get it.

Whoever that was that removed her membership will do exactly what she was going to do - breed her dog for money. too bad for the dog because I'd way rather see someone with experience doing this than any moke off the street - or at least start with a larger dog if they HAVE to do this

:thumbup: I just read this thread. Yet another sad example of how bluntness does not accomplish anything good. Yes, we all have a right to express our opinions the way we want, and I do not feel that we have to condone wrong breeding practices. But I cannot understand why those who profess to be so passionate about this breed cannot find it in their hearts to respond kindly. When responses are blunt and hurtful, pushing others away, it does nothing but hurt the breed. Perhaps we should each ask ourselves how many deaths we could have prevented by giving kind advice instead of being hurtful? Moreoever, as some others have pointed out, it is especially unwarranted on those who come here truly unaware of the fire they ignite by their use of certain terms.

I seriously doubt that a person who wants to breed their pup for money would listen to anyone that was trying to tell them not to. They only want someone to tell them it is ok and how to do it. Especially since she came to strangers without consulting the breeder or her vet first? Just doesn't make any sense. Seems to me she had already been told not to and was looking for someone to tell her she could.

I didn't see money mentioned. Maybe you could point it out. Also, many people ask questions on YorkieTalk in all the forums without talking to their breeder or vet first. How many questions do you see that start off by saying, "I talked to my breeder (or vet) but.... Sorry, I just don't see your point on this one.

You can see it because she never once said, ok you think it's not safe so I'm not going to risk it. No, she just kept asking for how to do it. If someone told me something was not safe for my baby, I'm not going to wait for someone to tell me that it is. I'm not going to risk him getting hurt at all.

I know people get really upset.. but until we hear the hole story as the why's then we should not jump the gun so to speak...
If this girl was told what she thought to be true.. we cannot fault her.. In fact I know for facts that breeders are not always honest.. and before I found yt.. I had been misinformed and mistreated... I did read before I jumped in and I did have yorkies long enough to know more then this girl obviously does..but this gets us nowhere.. I know I too can get upset at times.. and think wow stupidity.. but again we need to know where a person is learning from to think something is ok first..

I don't think anyone here would deliberately do anything to harm our babies, the OP included. She said as much in her last post. She did start out by asking a breeding question, but then all her responses were either replies to direct questions or else she replied defensively based on what she knew. From her first to last post was 1 hour, 7 minutes. I don't think she would change her mind that quickly. I try to steer people away from what I think are bad decisions and not be too blunt, especially with people I don't know. It seems to be more effective. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

I agree with the others....we too often assume things without having the whole story. I have re-read the posts, and do not see anywhere the OP indicates she wants to breed their pup for money. Perhaps I missed it? Nor does the fact she came here before going to her breeder or vet mean that she had already been told not to breed. Another assumption I noticed in the posts was the assumption she would be violated her contract if she bred. She stated later that she had a specific contract allowing her to breed. Which as we all know is entirely plausible. It would have been much more helpful to use the information she provided, instead of assuming the worst.

I contacted her and she said she was done with this site. She said she got pm's saying that she is going to kill her yorkie by breeding it. I told if she had any more questions she could contact me if she wanted to and I would help her any way I could. :aimeeyork

What a nice thing for you to do! I have often thought to myself that the pm's to people like this must be horrible, considering that there is more freedom of expression in the pm's and the comments on the public board are bad enough. Please do let her know that not everyone here is like that. Had I noticed the thread sooner, I would have tried to be helpful to her.
