Someone who is very interested in getting a puppy keeps saying that they will drive down tomorrow (they live a couple hours away) to get one, but they don't want to place a deposit...they want one NOW! They have a good home for one, and everything checks out great...but the puppies are only 10 weeks old and I REALLY REALLY don't want to let them go until they're 12 weeks or older. The one they want is the biggest girl, Hailey, but I'm still just not comfortable with it...

What should I tell them??? :rolleyes:

I would be a little concerned about it too. Why are they so impatient? Seems to me if you really want something badly, it's worth waiting for, especially just 2 weeks? I've known yorkie owners that waited months and even years until just the right one became available.

I know, right? They just can't seem to get it into their head that I'm not holding these babies for fun, I just don't feel COMFORTABLE letting them go at this age.

heck, I waited for Tessa to be conceived, then I waited for her birth, then I waited for her to be 15 1/2 weeks old before I got her LOL so if I can be THAT patient...anyone can LOL

what does your vet say? I've known people to let the yorkie pups go at 10 weeks with vet permission..but I too would be concerned as to why they are not willing to wait. then again, I know how it is to want something right when you find it LOL

I got maggie at 11 weeks and she was fine for the most part...but she did go a few days where she wouldn't eat and I almost lost her on her 2nd day home with me. so...I always think it is better safe than sorry. know what I mean???

maybe try and see if you can get a feel for why they aren't wiling to wait 2 more weeks.

Heck, my vet said I could let them go when they were weaned...:rolleyes: That's not why I'm keeping them until 12 weeks...I want to keep an eye on them, and I want them to be well socialized when they leave. They are willing to wait, but they don't want to...they just keep bugging me...lol :rolleyes:

well, if they are willing to wait..make them. I totally do not blame you for wanting to keep them until 12 weeks. and if they really want the pup, they will wait. and if they aren't willing to wait,..then maybe this isn't the best home for your pup. know what I mean? they should be looking out for her best interest...and that means waiting 2 more weeks. 2 weeks will really fly by quick!!!!

I would just flat out tell them they'll have to wait until the puppies are 12 weeks old. It's in the best interest of the puppies. If they decide not to buy a puppy because of that, then is it really the best home?

Good point, that's exactly what I told him. He said he understood and that he'll come and see them tomorrow and place a deposit. It's his girlfriend that's anxious to get one, she just lost her pet I believe. It's so frustrating to try and tell someone that if they're not getting it, ya know? lol

Maybe you could offer to meet them half way the second trip? That might be the nicest thing to do.

Sounds like they need a Mother's Day present. Are you sure it's for them?

If they are not patient enough to wait for two weeks will they be patient enough with training the pup, etc.?

They must respect your wishes...
 

Always go with your instinct, and your beliefs, and in the best interest of the pup...If they are not willing to respect your decision, then let them find another pup...
Its their loss...
No one more than you, wants this pup to be healthy and well before going to their permanent home...

Hold firm, Are they getting pick of the litter?
Then to me , its worth the trip to put a deposit down on pick of the litter for sure. If not let them go elsewhere. Dont let them pressure you girl.

I would tell them that it's better for the pup AND them in the long-run if they wait the two weeks. Plus, they will have two weeks to get everything ready that they need.

Yep, it's definitely for them. They are older and I don't think either of their mothers are living.

I think I have convinced them, I just didn't know what to say when he told me that she had lost her dog and wanted a replacement. I mean, that's horrible but I can't just let mine go early when I'm not fully comfortable with it, ya know?

If I had puppies to sell, I'd do a complete background check on potential adopters, plus I would have the pups spayed and neutered before they left my house. It would break my heart to have a puppy go somewhere only to be bred to death.

i havent even started breeding yet and wont till next year....but i all ready know i wont be letting any go before 12 weeks....and that is only if everything is perfect with them....my breeder will let them go to another breeder as young as 9 weeks but evryone else is 12-16 weeks....and she has one pup that was almost a year old...and then she was spayed before she went cause of her size...she was 2.9lbs at 11 months....and now she is 4 years old and weighs 3lb....so you have to be very careful....stick to your guns Niki....you have their best interest at heart....

Nicki.. I think you should just let them see the babies.. tell them you do not allow them to leave until 12 weeks.. and if they do not want to leave a deposit.. then it is up to them.. tell them maybe they should come back in two weeks and see what is left that has no deposit and then if you have one left they can take one at that time..but let them know if there is one they want.. that they need a deposit for if some one comes along with deposit it is gone..

The people need to learn patience and should respect your decision to sell the puppies at 12 weeks. There anxiety to secure a puppy makes me wonder what kind of “Yorkie parent” they will be. Serious and responsible buyers will put a deposit down. I purchased Tara, who is now 5 years old, from the same breeder that I purchased Cody from eight years earlier. Tara was only three weeks old and the breeder e-mailed me pictures. I immediately sent her a $50 deposit check. She did not let the puppy leave her house until she was 16 weeks old! I was totally okay with that decision since she professionally shows Yorkies and I totally respected her decision. A good, reputable breeder will let the puppies go when they are ready….not when the buyer thinks the puppies should be sold! Listen to your heart and go with your decision of at least 12 weeks. maybe you should consider letting her go at 10 weeks... she will bond with her new fam... she will be fine.. its so hard to let go:aimeeyork

lol I wish I could do a background check on everyone. I do the best I can, I check references and talk to them several times to try and get a feel for the kind of person they are. Mine are all sold on limited registration and I cut out the code so they can't try and register them full. They also have to sign a spay/neuter contract and in that contract it states that if I find out in the future they have bred the dog I have the right to take him/her back immediately. So hopefully some of that will deter someone. I know these people don't want her for breeding, she's going to be a loved pet, but they still need to be patient. :p

If I were ever to breed I would do the same.

I know Nicki, you and others might be uncomfortable with early spay/neuter but with all of the other registries anymore and people willing to be so decpetive, it really is the only way to guarantee no future pet owner will ever breed one of your babies.

I'm not in any way saying this couple would breed, as I do believe you've checked them out and they are probably exactly who they say they are. It's just that people are so good at scamming. And, even breeders with your same requirements have been taken advantage of before.

Thanks for the advice, but I just can't do it every time. Now, one of Brooke's puppies is going to stay with me until he's 6 months and get neutered before he goes to his new home. She has had a deposit on him since he was just a few days old. Of course that makes me feel better, he will have a wonderful home. I'm scared to death about getting Faith spayed, I waited 9 months to have her done and 10 months for Sophie because they're so small. I couldn't have the surgeries done before 6 months...I'm too paranoid.

I'm sure breeders do get scammed, and I think we try to prevent that as much as possible. I screen the homes the best I can. But anyways, I know they're not looking to breed...I have no idea how this thread got way off topic.

But anyways, I've actually been thinking on it a lot, and I may just hang onto Hailey for awhile to see how she grows. She could make it to 5 lbs, right? The growth chart isn't always accurate I know. Maybe I should just do that, since that's what I wanted in the first place. That means I'll be keeping 2 of Brooke's babies :rolleyes:, and I really shouldn't but.....I can't help it, the hardest part of breeding is having your babies leave to go to new homes...:(

I do understand about concerns for early spay/neuter and in no way judge you for your decision, not to do so. It would be difficult, I know. Sorry too about getting OT.....lol....you know how one thing leads to another, leads to.....

Hailey could very well make it to 5lbs. By holding onto her another couple of weeks, you might have a better idea. Reno was supposed to be a 4 to 4-1/2lb guy and has made it to 5lbs now.

I hope she does, she will definitely be here AT LEAST a couple more weeks...AND that's just an excuse for me to hold onto another baby...:rolleyes:;):D

I personally would love it if I bought a dog from a good breeder and they kept him/her til they were a little older because they know so much about the babies. It would be a benefit to my new baby. They could help with biting, potty training and all those things that a new mommy needs help with. I'm lucky that my Harley stays at daycare at his vet's office, so they take very good care of him. They even laugh at me because I ask them so many questions about him and his health (they think I stay on the computer too much lol)!

I would be worried too! Makes me wonder what their intentions are...they should want what is best....Puppies should be with their Mother at least 12 weeks. Trust your gut feeling! Mom's always know what's best!:)
