Hi from ky

it depend on what you are expecting for the furture of your breeding program as to your dogs
can you post picture's of them we would love to see and what area of ky are y from do you offer a contract are y babies vet checked are they micro chipped
have the parents been tested what do you have to offer that every other tom dick and harry doesn't:rolleyes:

what makes you'r breeding program better and allows you to stand out among all the fast buck people

are they akc ckc apri etc....are you'r dog's to the standard are they correct color are the knee's good bite's
are they soft coated silk coated these are jusy many question's that i would ask you when looking for a good breeder

more money does not alway mean better dog's if you put your heart and soul into what you are doing and make the health of your dog's and there puppies first and formost reputations are built over time

word of mouth can make you or break you .. there are an amazing amount of byb's in ky:goodluck:

heath testing it very important and well as the quality.
do you have silk coated parents??
most people like the silk coats the best and they are easier to care for and much prettier IN MY OPINION
also what are their weights on the parents as if they are over the standard of 7 lbs then they would go for less.
and the colors also play a part
most poeple want the standard of blue and gold
I personally like the black and gold best but it is not the standard.

bottom line if you are not a show breeder I think your prices are fair
why buy from a regular breeder for a 1000 and up when you can get much better for those prices from the best of the best.

I think it depends on the area. My Diesel was 500, parents are health tested for everythng, dna tested, I know at least the mom had a wonderful coat as well. He was priced so well because of the vet. I had posted when I got him that the breeder lives down the road from where I grew up. Goes to the same vet as I brought my critters to growing up. Very old man, very old school, very old prices. :D Plus, she has done all of her vet care for her Yorkies with him for all of the 14 years she has been breeding. Small town, small price. :)

Thank you for your input.I am all too familiar with liver shunt I had bought a little boy from a breeder in indiana he was adorable i fell in love with him immediatly.I should have know something was wrong because he was so cheap but I was new and didnt know better iguess.Any way we brought him home and 3 weeks later he started acting very strange I took him to the vet and had the test done and he was diagnosed with liver shunt.About a week and a half later he passed away.Do you screen your babies for that stuff before you let them go home?Do you give money back or another puppy and how long do you give them to come back on you?I have seen your web site very precious little furbabies.Do you have trouble finding your babies homes? Again thanks for the info.alot of people dont want to share advice.

To answer your question, Dr. Sharon Center, one of the leading experts on liver shunts, recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a bile acid test before going to their new home.

Did you know that Yorkies are thirty-six times more likely to have a liver shunt that all other breeds combined?

A bile acids test is inexpensive ($40-80 depending on your area) and easy to do. I personally would not consider buying a Yorkie puppy unless he had a BAT.

What is the difference in a byb and a reputable breeder?I hear that alot and was just wondering what makes you reputable?

This is a great comparison of a reputable breeder with a backyard breeder:

I think it depends on where you live .Around here to get a high quality male or female with all the testing and champion bloodlines (in the first 3 generations) 1000.00 tops.
You will pay more for a quality hunting dog around here than a small dog whether it be a yorkie etc...

I think that is so true.I cannot believe some of the prices of beagle pups in my area verses yorkies or another small breed dog.I dont know alot about hunting dogs but I do know my dogs are akc reg. silk coats, 5 to 7 lbs and dna tested, and still sometimes it take a while before someone comes along that is suitable.Alot of people I know think I amcrazy for treating my dogs the way I do (spoiling them taking them to get groomed buying goodquality food)they just put there hunting dogs outside and feed them ol roy or something like that.I take that back my dad owns a lab and he spends alot of time and money on her but people think he is crazy too.

Another problem I have ran into is even if I could afford a high quality show dog to better my breeding program most people sell only on spay or neuter contracts because they dont want you getting part of their bloodline.I had a lady going to sell me one of her older females but when I got there she raised the price and I didnt have that much much cash on me.When I got the money I called her back and she had changed her mind.I was very disappointed because I had been talking to her for a month about this dog.We were waiting for her to wean her puppies she had just had.So I guess what I am saying is no one wants to share their bloodlines whether they are puppies or older dogs.So how do you get started with high quality dogs?????????

Hmm, good question(literally-im not being a smart a**)!!

k2p1e 02-29-2008 05:17 PM

personally I think the true test of a good breeder is their reaction and actions after they find out one of their pups they sold has something wrong with them.

For example, I have a std poodle that we have been spending more then $200 a month at the vet for the past 2 years!!! he has had multiple problems, some genetic, some rare...but when I called the breeder just to let them know what has been going on..I was rebuffed, questioned and they wished to speak to my vet. i gave them full access to speak with my vet, my vet then told me that they were 'A piece of work...' They accused the vet of lying (do multiple blood tests/panels lie??) and trying to extort money...the funny thing was I NEVER mentioned money nor did he...

Any warm and fuzzy feeling I had beforehand is now GONE about this breeder.
And yes they are STILL breeding his parents:(

As a buyer, I don't mind paying $1000-$3000 for a yorkie. BUT I will only pay that much for a well-bred dog from a reputable breeder....the breeder must be breeding excellent example of the breed and health screening all of their dogs before breeding. The puppy must be a good example of the breed and healthy.

I wouldn't pay $1000 for a puppy from a breeder breeding pet quality dogs though...and I especially wouldn't pay very much if they weren't health screening their dogs and puppies. BYBs that are breeding pet quality dogs and not health testing are only charging thousands because uneducated people will pay it...

I agree 110%

My Fair Lady,

buy other wise they can be taken to the cleaners!!!
I really like what you have to say!!!

dna tested does not mean gentic tested. you must have a dna if
you have sired 3 litters in a year I think that is the #. you can voluntar
to dna test both males and females but this is not a gentic test or health test. alot of breeders who have sired several litters will be contacted by akc
to have there male dna tested before they can reg. a litter.
