Horrible....horrible... This was crazy~! I want to know if any of you have had this happen before with birthing Yorkie pups The lab I posted about a week or so ago about my daughters Lab and vet saying 11 pups, Mecca went into early labor. The vet had said it was a large litter and they may come a day or so early. My daughter kept calling me all day...Telling me Mecca was acting funny...wouldn't eat...panting...trying to hide.... I told her the vet said a couple days early....not 5!!! Well, then she called back crying..mom get out here now. Mecca just had a baby on the bed. We tried to get her in whelping box.. I went over the speed limit , I felt so bad after telling her it wasn't labor... When I got there another one was born and she was suctioning it with the bulb. Mecca was in such pain or so afraid she just wouldn't break the sac or nothing. I tried... but she refused to go in her whelping box. Then a big gush of fluid soon after I got there. Waiting for a half hour with her pushing many times, I told Jen that get ready, that I felt it was going to be a dry birth and that if she didn't have this puppy soon, she needed to head for the vet. It was a dry birth and the puppy was really struggling .... Then a placenta just came out on its own and no puppy.Just plopped on the floor!!! No puppy for half an hour...but then when she pushed out comes puppy with torn cord within an inch of its tummy. I thought for sure that the poor puppy would be dead. This happened TWICE,,,,Plop..placenta on the floor...with a puppy being born again 20 minutes later with torn cord an inch away, Needless to say, she went on to have 11. We ended up catching...and I mean catching as she wouldnt even lay down all the puppies...she ignored them all...so we had to break all the sac...tying cords,suction...and swing all 11 puppies. It was HORRIBLE! The worst scare of birthing I've ever went thru. And I have a farm and have birthed goats and other animals. I really don't think this is what Jen expected at all. I don't know if she'll ever try it again, Mecca and all the puppies went to the vets the next day. All are doing well..thank Goodness. I wanted to wait before posting as we didnt know if any..or how many would die from fluid in the lungs or something. I hope this never happens with my Yorkies. Her bedroom looked like a war zone after 9-pm to 3 am of her having puppies all over the room! Sorry so long |
wow, what a story. whelping is never never the same and it can be very scary. congrats to you and your daughter. i hope your daughter is ok. |
You scared me....I was afraid the story would have a sad ending. I can imagine the nightmare you went through but I am so glad it had a happy ending. If you had not been there then it is likely she could have lost the entire litter. I cannot tell you the number of breeders I have talk to over the years that lost puppies because there were not there when the birthing started and they come home to dead puppies still in the sac. I hope mom and her babies do well. By the way, great job! |
Wow that is definately an experience that would make me think twice about breeding.. holy smokes.. i hope momma and babies are fine and that your daughter isnt to traumatized from all this.. |

But she started licking the pups, loved them to pieces. AFTER she was done. They are all nursing well, and at over a week old the biggest one is bigger then my 9 1/2 weeks old pups...lol My daughter even went out and bought a video thing with the TV monitor so she could see at all times that they were doing well, along with constant checks. Boy are they cuties...8 boys tho...only 3 girls. Quote<<You scared me....I was afraid the story would have a sad ending. And I thought once the placentas come out it was 100% for sure they'd be born dead. Wasn't all oxygen cut off at that point? We were soooo shocked,,,,yet excited when they come out doing better then the dry birth...we suctioned so much fluid out of his lungs...He had the roughest time. <quote>wow, what a story. whelping is never never the same and it can be very scary. congrats to you and your daughter. i hope your daughter is ok.<quote> She is a nurse..thats the funniest part of all this!!! lol Shes birthed babies!!!! :p |
i have been there with my gsd when she had 14 2 days before christmas we had made a huge whelping box in our garage with heat lamps etc and she decided to go into labor at 1 am had one running across the floor after she woke me up we did get her into the whelping box and things went pretty well with me running back and forth for coffee last one was born at 3 the next afternoon . needless to say we kept her and the pups in the garage until after xmas because so many people were comming in and out but needless to say all went well spent the next 5 weeks taking turns bottle feeding the pups and we lost none and there was nothin like taking 14 pups to be vet checked thats when i learned to give shots and do things myself but i guess the most fun my cleaning up after 14 puppies in my house that were 20 pound pups yorkies are easy:2omg: |
[QUOTE=cutiepieyorkies;1779823] needless to say we kept her and the pups in the garage until after xmas QUOTE] 14!!!! wow I bet Jen wished she had Mecca in the garage.... Add to the cost of breeding new bedroom carpet....lol What a mess!!!! YESSSSSS Yorkies are much easier:p |
Your right what a horror story for you poor people to go through. Bless Mecca's heart. Thank heavens you were there when she went into labor. Congratulations all around. What a puppy crew you have. Post pictures when you can. Thank heavens your story has a happy ending. I was afraid to keep reading. Hugs, |

And then when it was born ,its little cord was "ripped" off about 1 inch from its tummy. I thought this is IMPOSSIBLE....no oxygen...dead..it should have been dead. Then she had a couple/few more puppies..At this point I really checked for placentas...lol Then around the 7=8 birth. PLOP on the floor again...placenta. I was like what the heck?!?!?!?!?!? No puppy again....so I thought this puppy will for sure be dead It was just some kinda lucky fluke the first time And then when it ws born its little cord was ripped off about 1 inch from its tummy too!!!!. I know....you're right...I thought dead too..How could it not be? Ya know?!?!?!? But they did better then the dry birth. Thats why I'm wondring if its ever happened to anyone here? Weird |

But I swear this is what happened. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes... I wouldn't neither... It was almost funny...my poor son in law, was just ready to cry because Jen was, And said Nana what do I do with "these."so there were 2 placentas for the first 2 pups born before I got there. CRAZY? yes.... And if someone else was posting this. I KNOW...I'd think this lady is full of it....LOL |
That does seem mighty strange, I am never heard of a placenta being delivered before the puppy. |
:di Have Breed Rotts. For Many Years, And I Have Had That Happen To Me, And I Thought The Same Thing That The Pups Would Be Dead, But Wernt. What Kind Of Dog Is This???? My Rott Had 13 One Time And That Is All I Thought About Was Bottle Feeding So Many:d But Didnt Have To . Renae |

(Not really...but so people don't think I'm a nutcase...LOL!) I Know~!!!! I still cant believe it. All I know is I hope no placentas "plop" out before my baby Yorkies! Mecca is a Chocolate Labrador retriever. Is was so nice to see that when her pain was gone she took right to her babys |
Wow....that is one amazing and strange story....but so glad it had a happy ending. Congratulations to you, your daughter and to Mecca! And yes, if possible, I too would love to see pictures of 11 puppies! |
We've been through that twice here. The first time my lab had 11. She started the first stage of labor at 8pm and then by 9 am she pushed twice and then that was it. We checked her temp and it was up to 102. Emergency c at 930 on a saturday! She had two fighting to come out. Needless to say the vet was taking them out and handing them to me, I dried and suctioned and handed them to my SIL who slung. It was a MESS! And since the mom was under she couldn't take care of the babies so we did every two hours for the first 24 hours. The second litter (one of her daughters (that's another story) started to have them at 9pm and was just pushing and pushing and we had a couple that were breech and dry and we worked them for ever I think. Two she had under my bed (fun getting to them) and the rest she had in my closet (nowhere near her box). she had 6 all black males and she is yellow. Let's just say I stopped having labs. Quote:

Very gentle dog. And cute baby! |

I laughed at the "under my bed" When I walked in, here I'm thinking Yorkie mindset.. She would be in the whelping box...rofl....NOT!!! And I see their king size mattresses in the living room. Daughter said she was on the bed..under the bed..so out they went I walked in and the fun just began. She had those puppies all over the room... Yuck yuck yuck She didnt have one puppy in the same area. Or I should say dropped the puppy. Nothing like this Nana running around trying to catch it..OMG...lol:p |
good luck with your brood the real fun begins in about three weeks they are very cute |
lol!!!!! It's crazy! She kept wanting to get up and go potty so here we are in the dark with a flashlight and a towel following her around waiting to catch one. Quote:
|
I think the cleanest litters I've helped deliver were kittens, my cat had three litters (there's something about under my bed and in my closet) and I never saw any mess by the time she was done. |
WOW! those babies are huge! mine ranged from 3 oz to 1 lb. I'd be running and dropping those babies out too I think!LOL:eek: Quote:
|
I was looking at the pics again and it's funny because the litter of eleven was two yellows and 9 black also |
she wasn't concerned because it was her first liter. many first time mothers don't understand. i have bred many shelties. my two females both were confused their first liter, and both ate their first pup. it's sad, but it's what they do. My one female was bred on accident, she was so young; less than a year. usually after the birthing, they are very involved with the babies |

Except she cant keep up with the poopy ALREADY.LOL~! After 1 week daughter was having to help Mecca with wiping. Jen was like ..Mom they're going potty on each others heads .I had to laugh I told her hunny you just wait...You aint seen NOTHING yet... Ewwwwwwwwwww:p |

This morning all eyes open and they are adorable. And you thought they were big...(so did I compared to Yorkies..lol) They were 5 days early!!!! crazy huh |
