Red-legged yorkie? 3 Attachment(s) Would he be considered a red legged yorkie? The hair on his head is wirey and the body hair is course. |
I don't think he is red legged, but he may be mixed with Australian Terrier because of the coarse hair. A lot of Yorkies are mixed with the AT. I had a foster once who was a Yorkie/AT mix. He looked exactly like pure Yorkie till he was older. By the way, your baby is just adorable. Also you may want to cut his nails since they are so long. ;) |
What a cutie. I'm not sure he's a red leg as I have never seen one in person, but I do know that a lot of Yorkies have that color in their legs when they are pups. Baby did, but now her hair is blonde. Sorry I'm no help. ;) |
romey had alot of red when he was a pup, but as he grew older it went away. |
Actually you should be thrilled. I noticed the green glow to his eyes which usually means a silky haired baby. And if that sounds unbelieveable, a baby with wiry coarse hair will grow a soft silky coat as he gets older. I wouldn't have believed it myself after feeling Beamers coat, but he is now 10 months oild and his new coat is coming in beautiful and silky |
He isn't my "yorkie"... It's my bf's moms yorkie.. He's from a broker, and for some reason something is screaming at me that he's not purebred.. I tried to take good pics because he looks like a deer head chihuahua ... *shrug* The pictures brightened him up A LOT... he's more of a rust/red color.. And my definition of wirey is like a wire haired jack russell or a brissell (sp?) brush.. Oh well... Just thought I'd ask.. |
The texture of Lacy's hair is coarser..it has never grown fast at all. She's stayed black and tan which I like because I love the darker colors. I added fish oil to her diet in October and since then her hair has been growing faster. But I dont think it will ever grow to floor-length |
Poor baby! This yorkie is probably not going to have long hair. Coat looks too wirey around the legs and sparse everywhere else, even with the green glow - coat hairs on leg is very thick, short, and wirey - JMO I am sure though he is very sweet. Here are some good photos on the YTCA site - see 11 weeks old photo and you can see the difference. http://www.ytca.org/pictures.html T. |
Red-legs don't actually have a wiry coat but one that is considered hard. It is too brittle and slow growing to acheive floor length but holds a ton of pigment. My redleg threw silk coats but I've heard that they can throw soft coats as well. Her eyes always flash gold and her skin is a very deep gold as well. |

I copied this from the sticky in the GDF (gen. disc.) on coat. Not sure if it applies, but it could be relevant.... A puppy that has a wiry coat texture, with a tan that is a very bright red gold by four to five months, will as an adult do one of two things: First, if the puppy as it approaches five or six months, or at least by nine months, shows the transition from black to blue, the coat texture will soften to a silky texture. If the black coat does not show this transition to blue, the adult dog will retain the wiry coat which will never attain any great length. I'm like Topknot, I don't think he'll grow long coat. I don't think he's a mix either. |
he sure is a cutie:) |
Red Legged Yorkie 1 Attachment(s) I've enclosed a picture of my Lily.......she looks so much like the red legged. She is 6 months old and weighs 1 lb 10 ozs. She is a doll and eats like a horse. She bosses my other two boys around. I hope her hair gets a little longer so I can put bows in it. I think her coloring is beautiful. I love the pictures of all the yorkies. |
That's good information-- Quote:
