Heart worm medication
 
If you yorkie is pregnant does she still get her monthly heart worm medication.

I know it's safe to continue giving Heartguard...I don't know about the others though

If it were my dog I would stop giving it. The following article gives some things to think about.

OMG, this sounds awful....I didnt know it was like that. I am going to talk to one of my friends tommorow. She is a breeder....I am wondering if she even gives heartworm medication at all.....Although I new it everytime I gave my baby her heartworm medication she seemed sick for two or three days....she even throws up.....I just thought that was normal...Im a bad MOM.

There is controversy in giving heartworm medicine, pros and cons. Here in Texas heartworms is a more serious problem but I know a lot of dogs that still get heartworms even though they are on the medication. There was a heartworm vaccination a couple of years ago that was recalled because it was actually causing a large number of deaths in dogs that had it.

That site has good information but they didn't say what your dog has to go through if it gets heartworm. They have to be injected with a type of arsenic more than once.:eek: It is quite serious to get heartworm. I don't like the drugs either though. If you are in a state that freezes during the winter I would not give it in those months. There is also a grace period for some of them. Heartgard, for example, has a 15 day grace period. They just tell you to give it every 30 days so you remember.:rolleyes: I would probably give Heartgard every 40 or so days because 45 is cutting it too close. I use Interceptor though and I'm not sure of the grace period on it.

Like I said this is a controversial subject. I have had Yorkies for 12 years, they stay in my home. I have never had any get heartworms. I know other breeders that do not use the heartworm medicines. Just google 'natural heartworm treatment' and you will find much more information on the prevention and natural treatment for heartworms without all the dangerous sideefects. I read a very interesting article a few years ago that explain the cycle of the heartworm and it said many dogs can live long natural life with heartworms. The heartworms can live in your dog up to 7 years but they eventually die, they don't multiply. Most dogs I know that die from heartworms don't die from the heartworms but from the treatment. The heartworm medicines might prevent heartworms but what about all the damage you might be causing to their organs and immune system. I am a firm believer in alternative medicine. I have witnessed to often what over medication can do to our pets and people.

You are not a bad mom. You were doing what you thought was right. Let us know what your breeder says. I would just worry that giving it to her while she is pregnant could jeopardize the health of the puppies. What heart preventive is she on?

I usually take my dams off of Heartworm meds (Intercepter) prior to breeding. Reconvine 2 weeks after whelping (after having a flotation done), since it's a natural method of deworming pups.

I try to keep everything as natural as possible during their pregnacy. Do nothing that can affect the fetus.

I have her on heart guard and she was due for another pill on the first but I have been holding off giving it to her so I can find out how safe it is for her to have it.....but I dont plan on taking her out of the house while she is pregnant, whelping, nursing...etc.

What is having a flotation done. I have never heard of this before. Oh and thanks all for the wonderful advice.....Im still waiting on what my breeder does but I will definetly let all you gals know what she says....

Flotation is the test that is done to insure the there is no heartworm present before reinitiation the heartworm meds.

Well, I talked to my breeder and she said she doesnt give heartworm meds while pregnant and she does give the medication but every forty days of so....

Oh okay, thanks I didnt know that is what it was called...haha now I know..hehe.....I have decided to not give her heart medication to her. Keep a look out for puppy watch around March for us because that is when Penaut is due.......
