What am trying to say is that I dont have to go to a show to have a judge tell me that my yorkies are stantard to the breed. |

IMHO, You can read and study until you are blue in the face and breed until you "think" you have the perfect specimen of the breed, but without hands on evaluation and competing with others of the same breed, you cant get the whole picture. How can you judge movement and structure without showing? Many details are missed and knowledge is not gained by NOT showing. Showing only benefits your breeding program. |

I think if anybody puts enough time and plenty of research into the yorkie, that they also can decide on what is standard and what is not. |

So who sets up this rule, the judges, the people who show, the people who beleive that only show people have the right to breed. So I have no right to breed. Guess I better pack it all in now then. Stupid me!!! |

You have a right to do anything you want. What I am saying is that it only benefits you, the breeder, to compete in the show ring. If you want to know if your dogs are conformationally correct, how do you judge it at home? Who do you compare to? Do you compare your dogs to a book or the neighbors dog? |

This is going to be long but it's to show you the difference in what a show breeder/exhibitor differs in their interputation of the standard in the ring....I know some exhibitors that like nothing but a long beautiful coat and cute face but have no regard as to the structure and movement, the texture of the coat or the color, they convince themselves that that black coat is actually a dark steel blue ( I have to laugh at those people because they are color blind cough cough ). Then you have those that like nothing but a pretty head and small ear set and forget about it may have health issues as in an obivious bad rear maybe even crippled but in that hard stack we are taught to do hard to see how the rear is crippled unless you are watching it show in the ring....so you see it is important to get out to the shows see what's being show and if it's up to standard and if you find one you like and it's what you find to be the best representation of the breed get with that breeder and get to know them prehaps let them mentor you. I hope this helps in some way as to why going to a show and getting to know what's out there is very important! Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
. Yes I am trying my best to do the best for the breed. So I guess what I have done is have the kids before I got married. :D |
I think we all agree that the number one priority is health of our yorkies and those we produce...That being said ...A yorkie with beautiful movement and great structure is one with a sound body...Often times a dog high in the rear is also suffering from poor knees...The whole outside appearance is part of the whole picture of the Yorkie... I did not start out showing but I did sit ringside for about 5 years or more watching, comparing, and learning...Then we started exhibiting, getting to know some yorkie show folks, getting the opportunity to actually feel the structure of other yorkies...Learning from others with more experience than myself...It all has been very beneficial and we have gained so much from it all...It really helps to develop your eye for evaluating your dogs... It is our responsibility to make the breed we have chosen and love to be the best it can be!...Their future is in our hands! ~Laura |

Personally, I don't care for the breeding aspect of this, showing is where my passion lies.. |
I'd be a doggy midwife if there was a call for it but showing is where the education and the contacts are made. It's easy to evaluate the obvious, the topline, earset, balance in the face and squareness of the body. Where I still need help is in evaluating a good front and rear, correct pasterns, and proper angulation. In so many areas correct structure is related to soundness as in bowlegged rear contributing to LPs. It's all connected and just too important to not get out there and put the work in to learn all that I can. Some day I hope to have developed a great eye, for now I'll pass everything through my mentor and other show veterns. |

Debbi who thought she'd been banned. First I couldnt get yorkietalk AT ALL... Then I could read but not post ... |
By the way, I noticed that Groveshires has Squirrel's Porshe Boxster now. Are any of your dogs out of him? He was part of my pedigree search for Carly, she is his great grand daughter. |

It is so hard to find a mentor in this area. Rose and I have had to wing it on our own with the showing andd breeding also. The show breeders we know here are no more than a puppymill so we don't want to fool with them and as far as regular breeders, well, Rosse and I are about the only ones that have a decnet breeding program. One of the disadvantages of living in rural kentucky. Even most of the shows are an eight hour drive for us so we are really limited but trying hard. |

Delores here is three Show breeders/YTCA members in KY. There are several more responsible show breeders in your state that are not YTCA members but definitely not puppymills.
