do you vaccinate!!!

for the breeders on here who vaccinate their pets, what vaccine do you use ? vanguard, duramune or canine spectra?I am thinking about vaccinating myself and I would appreciate:) your comments

I usually use Duramane 5 Plus CV.(coronavirus killed) No Lepto. It is about double price what the regular duramane 5 is. I just bought some and it was $119. plus shipping overnight charges. Ended up being 138. for 25. I have also used the Vanguard.

journey826 12-03-2007 08:59 AM

thank you

do you prefer one brand over another ?

Mardelin 12-03-2007 09:17 AM

I use Vanguard Plus 5......purchase it through RevivalAnimal.com $54.00 plus shipping overnight.....

Also, Intra Trac III for kennel cough.....

Use Kndall Monjet Lear Lock 25 x 5/8 (3cc) syringes with needles....100 are something like $12.00 last along time

yorkiekist 12-03-2007 12:43 PM

I also prefer Vanguard 5 from Revival also!!

Thank You

I have never heard of revival but I will look it up asap:thumbup: I was going to use dr, foster&smith.

Mardelin 12-03-2007 01:52 PM

Just a bit of info.....

In September, me and my Tahlulah were ready to travel to Dallas for a dog show and she was due her annual vaccine....The vaccines I'd ordered hadn't arrived and I was due to leave.. I was about to go to a local vet to purchase a vaccine.....but, asked what manufactorer they used.....it was different than Vanguard......for some reason I decided to contact my vet back in Dallas to ask if there would be any adverse conditions using a different manufactorer....He informed me that switching could cause adverse reactions. Good thing my vaccines arrived......

I order certain items from Dr's Foster & Smith too....

There are others. Pet Supplies Delivered. petsuppliesdelivered.com

I found that Revival Animal has better prices on their vaccines. Their customer service is so very helpful.

journey826 12-03-2007 01:55 PM

OK!

well what about kennel jec-2 for bordetella/parainfluenza because they have single use It says to vaccinate once and then every 6-12 mths and as this is my first and last litter do I need the extra? I only have three pups left one is gone already.

journey826 12-03-2007 02:03 PM

Thank you mardelin and I will only use the kind I start with.I have had some bad experiences with the vets around me including a vet cutting my boy during the exam for his testicles but I had already shaved him down, there was nothing to take off and he just cut him open.and the tech lied for him:mad: I just said I will try and vaccinate myself.

Vaccinate for Kennel cough at 8 weeks....then yearly......However, my show dogs every 6 months.....which I recommend if you have your dogs out in public.

journey826 12-03-2007 02:28 PM

sorry!

THEY ARE ALREADY 11WKS ABOUT TO TURN 12WKS I WAS PLANNING TO KEEP THEM ALL, AND VACCINATING AT 12 WKS, BUT MY FIANCE SAID ITS ME OR THE PUPS.SO I TOOK ONE IN TO THE VET FOR HIS VACCINES AND SOLD HIM TO A FRIEND.tHAT IS WHY I AM STILL SO LEARY ABOUT THE VETS I HAVE COME ACROSS HERE. THEY CHARGED ME 150.00 AND ALL I WANTED WAS A CHECKUP AND VACCINE, NOT TO MENTION HE WAS ONLY GIVEN A THREE WAY WHICH I WAS NOT EVEN AWARE THEY HAVE THREE WAY VACCINES. HE CHECKED HE SAID THE PUP WAS GIVEN A 7 WAY WITH LEPTO AND I SPECIFICALLY SAID NO LEPTO. MIND YOU HE WAS ALREADY DE-WORMED AT HOME AND TREATED WITH CAPSTAR TO BE SAFE.ALL TESTS CAME OUT NEGATIVE. I ALSO TOLD HIM NOT TO TREAT FOR WORMS AS HIS LAST DE-WORM WAS LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AGO.THEY JUST DO WHAT THEY WANT BECAUSE THEY ARE THE DR.S AND FEEL WE DON'T KNOW CRAP.:thumbdown

Mardelin 12-03-2007 02:39 PM

I've yet to deworm.....I usually take in a stool sample from just one pup....if worms happen to show up then I'll deworm.. So, why deworm if you don't have to....it reaks havoc on their little systems.

Reason is that my adults are on heart worm.....two weeks after pups are born....Mom has a heartworm med...it automatically deworms pups.....

Sounds like you need to find yourself a breeder friendly vet...one that doesn't feel threatened......

A good vet will always keep breed specific breeders numbers in their rolidex files.....

I've posted somewhere the new vet protocal for vaccines.

8 weeks 12 weeks and 16 weeks.....a booster a year after...

journey826 12-03-2007 02:49 PM

you are right!

seems alot of vets here in mich anyway either breed also or know someone who breeds.I always get asked a million questions about my dogs.where did you get the ,are they registered, how much did you pay. etc.. and I am just as outrageous as they are.I say the farthest place from where we are,yes akc, when the are not reg. at all and I tell them 2000 dollars.they usually shut up then.I say it all with a smile.I didn't know there was a required questionare for bringing my pets in for health checks and shots:eek: where was I and to think the one asking all the questions was to busy in my business to tell me he only had one testicle.

journey826 12-03-2007 02:53 PM

thank you again!

I am ordering tonight so I know Í'll have the vaccines before thursday.

I have been ordering mine recently from Jefferspets.com the price is about the same tho as Revival. You also have to decide if you want to use the ones with the CKV for Coronavirus. Those are the expensive ones. the regular five ways are in the 50-60 dollar range.

Good....they'll pack them in ice...now is the best time to order them....

journey826 12-03-2007 03:36 PM

think I'll just order the regular 5 way and the order the one for kennel cough the corona I'll let the new owner get if they feel the pup will have a higher risk of being exposed.

Corona is usually predicated on the regional area as well as leptos

They are both something I don't do and definately have leptos in my contract as not to give....

fannie 12-03-2007 03:48 PM

Mardelin, you don't vaccinate for Corona? I've gone back and forth on that. I have vaccinated with it and I haven't. I'm just not sure which way I should go. I have decided to go with the new protocol with 8, 12 and 16 weeks. I also have Lepto in my contract to not give.

Oh, and I use Vanguard Plus 5. Same thing my vet uses.

Nope, if you do the research the shot is absolutely useless, there are different strains and there is a vaccine if they should be unfortunate to get it.....

Mardelin 12-03-2007 03:59 PM

VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED
Multiple components in vaccines
compete with each other for the immune system, and result in lesser
immunity for each individual disease, as well as increasing the risk of
a reaction. Canine Corona Virus is only a disease of puppies. It is
rare, self limiting (dogs get well in 3 days without treatment).
Cornell & Texas A&M have only diagnosed one case each in the last 7
years. Corona virus does not cause disease in adult dogs.

Leptospirosis vaccine is a
common cause of adverse reactions in dogs. Most of the clinical cases
of lepto reported in dogs in the US are caused by serovaars (or types)
grippotyphosa and bratsilvia. The vaccines contain different serovaars
eanicola and ictohemorrhagica. Cross protection is not provided, and
protection is short lived. Lepto vaccine is immuno-supressive to
puppies less than 16 weeks.

That's what I was finding in the research I had done. Plus, from what I could find, if they were to get it, it would happen before I started my routine vacc. anyway. I felt like I was spending a lot of money on a useless vacc.!

journey826 12-03-2007 04:10 PM

Right

I have done some research on the vaccines and that is why I was against lepto and the corona, also waiting till the puppy is a little older to vaccinate the experts go back and forth on the best time to start vaccines between 8-12wks but they all agree 6wks is too young because of the moms protection still being active in their systems could cancel each other out.AND really without a tieter test we don't know exactly how long each individual pup is protected.

Dr. Dodd's vaccination protocol
is now being adopted by ALL 27 North American veterinary schools. I
highly recommend that you read this. Copy and save it to your files.
Print it and pass it out at dog fairs, cat shows, kennel club meetings,
dog parks, give a copy to your veterinarian and groomer, etc.

VACCINATION NEWS FLASH

I would like to make you aware
that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of
changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Some of this
information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and
there will be skeptics.

Some organizations have come up
with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to
appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about
potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic
well being should not be a factor in medical decision.

NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY
"Dogs and cats immune systems
mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given
after 6 months of age, it produces an immunity which is good for the
life of the pet (ie: canine Distemper, Parvo, Feline distemper). If
another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the
first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine, and there
is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory
cells induced." Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper
unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic
reactions, and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. "There is no
scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual
administration of MLV vaccines." Puppies receive antibodies through
their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks.

Puppies & kittens should NOT be
vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the
vaccine, and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at
6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first highly effective
vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than
stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given
starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age.
Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1
year 4 mo) will provide Lifetime immunity.

CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
DOGS
Distemper & Parvo
"According to Dr. Schultz, AVMA,
8-15-95, when a vaccinations series given at 2, 3 & 4 months and again
at 1 year with a MLV, puppies and kitten program memory cells that
survive for life, providing lifelong immunity." Dr. Carmichael at
Cornell and Dr. Schultz have studies showing immunity against challenge
at 2-10 years for canine distemper & 4 years for parvovirus. Studies
for longer duration are pending. "There are no new strains of
parvovirus as one mfg. would like to suggest. Parvovirus vaccination
provides cross immunity for all types." Hepatitis (Adenovirus) is one
of the agents known to be a cause of kennel cough. Only vaccines with
CAV-2 should be used as CAV-1 vaccines carry the risk of "hepatitis
blue-eye" reactions & kidney damage.

Curious

I know you well etablished breeders don't have the same issue but for those who do or know, how do you deal with DR.s putting down breeders vaccinating themselves?I ask this because when I got my pup he only needed one more shot until the next year and rabies, but the vet I went to, I'll be dang on they didn't vaccinate my pup all over again for everything each time I came in. always saying it was something that was not in the regular vaccine he needed.I want to give mine ALL their shots before they go so all they will need is the rabies.

The only thing that is required by each state is Rabies....so, you do have rights as a responsible canine owner....

My pups leave my home with a minimum of 2 vaccines prior to leaving my home and since they do go to local homes....my new families have opted to use my vet.....

I highly recommend that you take an active role in your medical care for your pups......I know that the vet I did have was no longer my vet when I asked him if he performed dentals on all the dogs that came in....he told me that his vet techs did it.....I politely told him that I would no longer being using him for my dentals....he asked why....my response was is that I'm paying for vet services not tech services and I want to make sure that should an emergency arise I want to make sure that the vet is at the helm.....

So, if you are unhappy with your vet.....and he won't do what you ask him too, tell him you'll find another vet...

My vet knows that I give my own vaccines.....however, he does know that I do not falter on annual checkups, including flotation. dentals and emergencies. So, he isn't going to lose out on obtaining money from me.

journey826 12-03-2007 04:31 PM

Yes I Agree

an I have gone through 4 vets because of this.I ask are they making that little or are they just greedy.the vet right up the block from me over charged me for tests that were not needed.I don't like to be mean or rude but I had already told her no.I paid but I did not go back.another vet was looking at my boy for the retained testicule I had shaved him down prior to going in and he still said he needed to shave him cut him open right in front of me I almost fainted.then his tech lied for him he said he bit him.he did not even when he cut him he cried and tried to get away.it seems you get crappy service as soon as they think you have a brain and want to be involved in your animals care
