Yorkie Litters I have read that an average Yorkie litte is usally 1 or two pups... but after visiting the YT Nursery, I have seen a lot of litters of 4 and 5 puppies. What determines the size of the litter...Age, size of dog, times they tied? Or are litters of 4 to 5 pups pretty common... I have my female due with her first litter in Dec 12 and she doesnt look pregnant at all except for her belly is a little bigger than before...I'm just wondering if she doesnt look big maybe cuz she only has 1 or two, or do they start really showing during the last week or pregnancy? |
I have a yorkie that I am hoping is pregnant. If she is she will be due Dec. 22. I take her in to the vet on Tuesday to find out if she is. I have never bred a dog before so I am wondering the same thing. My little Lily isn't showing at all right now. She had morning sickness a little over a week ago. Hopefully someone that has bred yorkies can answer this question for us! |
My Molly had her first litter October 12 and she had 7 pups! She had only tied once. I thought Her litter would be small also. The vet told me otherwise after she had her xray. Sadly we lost one 12 hours after he was born, but all of the others are doing great. |

The female determines the number of puppies in the litter. |
Litter size is determined by a number of things. How many ovum are present at fertilization, how many implant properly, and how many are reabsorbed are a few of the factors. |

My Lexie had a litter of 4 five weeks ago, she came from a litter of 5. I wonder, does family litter sizes down the line (heredity) have anthing to do with litter sizes? |
Yorksmama, definitely let me know what the vet tells you! I have really been thinking of an UltraSound.... |
I will let you know what the vet says on Tuesday when I bring Lily in for a checkup. She will be on day 31. Do you know if the vet will be able to tell if she is pregnant by just a checkup at this time? Other than her having morning sickness one morning, I haven't seen any other symptoms. She doesn't show at all. Lily came from a litter of 5 pups. |

Day 31 is too soon, IMO to have an x-ray. However, at this stage, the vet will be able to tell for sure if she's pregnant or not. If you're planning on doing an x-ray, wait until the last week. Pups should be fully developed and your vet can take the measurements of the heads vs. the diameter of her pelvis as to if she can safely deliver or not. Bitches are pregnant for 9 weeks. One week for a dog is like 1 month for a human. |
I will wait until the last week to have the X-Ray. That is one thing that I am concerned about...is Lily being able to have the puppies without complications. She is pretty small. Pretty close to 5 lbs. We bred her with a male that is smaller though. I am taking the male, Buddy, into the vet on Tuesay as well. He is due for his shots. I will ask the vet if he thinks 31 days is too soon to tell if Lily is pregnant. If it is or if he is unsure, I don't think that he would charge me for a visit. Too bad we couldn't have them pee on a stick! I am so anxious to find out. |
We have two breeding females. Davie, 5 pounds, has had 1 to 3 puppies in each of her litters. Lexie, 6-7 pounds but right now weighs 8 pounds, has had litters of 6 than 6 than on 7-17-07 had 7 healthy puppies. Having big litters is exciting, but lots of worry and work. Davie never got near the size that Lexie got when she was pregnant. Poor Lexie could not move for the last week of her pregnancy with 7 and we had to carry her outside or to the food dish. Good luck with your female. My experience is that if your female is pregnant, she will have a small litter if her tummy is not big by this time. |

Hopefully, your girl will not have any complications during whelping, but in case, keep your emergency vet numbers on hand. Just because she's on the smaller side and you bred her with a smaller male does not mean that she's going to have small pups. Do you know what is behind both dogs in their lineage? Since all yorkies were bred down from larger dogs means that they can have throw backs but it seems as though you're on the right track! Hold off another week and I'm sure you'll be able to tell by then. I remember reading in a book that the average yorkie litter is 2-4 pups. On average, Gracie will whelp 3 pups and London has only had one litter of 2. Good luck! |
