| | Liver shuntHi, I am so bad at these blogs - I just composed a message and it didn't send and said to compose a longer message. I will try once more. My yorkie Dixie, was diagnosed with a liver shunt and she had surgery at UC Davis last April. I found an excellent online group for dogs with liver shunts: http://pets. groups.yahoo. com/group/ DogLiverDisease/ The moderators are successfully managing their own liver dogs with diet and liver support. The first thing you should do is stop feeding meat protein. The best food is Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 dry kibble. Also, Hills canned LD is good but it is higher in fat so it is maybe better for a growing puppy. These are prescription foods you can get from your vet. If you can't get these really quickly, you can buy a high quality veggie food until you can get the RC or Hills. The food is really important because their livers can't handle or process the meat protein. Also, feeding six small meals per day helps their livers so that the liver doesn't get over loaded. Also, you should give lactulose to help keep the toxins from building up. You know you are giving the right amount when they have 2 soft but formed stools per day. We also give liver support supplements: Hepato Support and Vetri dmg. You can get these at www.homevet.com Dixie turned 2 years today and she will always be on the prescription food, lactulose and liver support because it ended up she also had MVD (kinda of like tiny microscopic shunts in the liver). I really encourage you to check out the Dog Liver Group. I couldn't have gotten through it all without them. Sincerely, Julia |
