I don't deserve puppy love?

Need to vent.....
I took Simone to a doggie mixer in the park earlier today because I wanted to A) give Hooks a break because she is driving him crazy and he is a little worn out from being sick and B) just to show her off:D
Everything was great and I got to chat with a few other mommies and daddies. I got to rave about this site and for some reason we got onto the topic of animal shelter donations etc. Everyone was sharing things that they did for animals and I was kind of quiet since it isn't my area. A fellow lady yorkie owner noticed and called me out and I said " Well I don't really have any experience with shelters or donations to animal rescues"
She then gave me a look like I punted her chihuahua  and asked me why not and I politely replied "While I love animals and adore my own puppies, I feel that it is my place to improve the conditions of my fellow human beings before I can devote my attention to the animal causes. I just don't want to say I contribute when I don't and my heart isn't in it".
She then told me that she was a proud PETA member and animals are a lot more vulnerable than human beings since humans can ALWAYS improve their situations and an animal is helpless. She then advised me to do a little soul searching and realize who are the real victims in the world.
I got a little irritated....well pissed.... and told her that there are more animal shelters than there are domestic abuse shelters in this country. Someone is always more willing to bend over backwards to help out a dog they don't even know, but have contempt and suspicion when it comes to helping out a homeless individual. Someone is always willing to call animal control when they see someone hit or abuse an animal but more than 50% of ppl in this country wouldn't do the same thing if they saw or heard a woman being abused.
She then told me that if I truly felt that way then I didn't deserve the unconditional love of my puppies. Of course her and I didn't exhange numbers for a follow up play date, but even a few of the others felt that we both had valid points.
I love and adore my puppies. I drop everything to take them to vet (or get on here:rolleyes:) if they do the slightest abnormal thing....but I can't lie and say that care about animal rights in lieu of human beings. I love animals and I wish I could take them all in and give them a home, but if it came to taking in a human or an animal or fighting a cause for an animal or a human being...I would pick the human being.. is that really such a horrible thing?

![]() | I've actually thought about that. I work with children at school....some who have received unmentionable abuse. That is my contribution to children. I also have taken in 3 doggies that were rejected by humans. Two still have many issues after 9 yrs. That is my contribution to animals. It is okay to have your own opinions without being drug through the mud. There are many members here on YT who detest PETA, and those who are members and swear by it. Seems like there should be a happy medium but there never is in our country. It's either way left or way right. ![]() |
