do you give your furbabies?

When I went to SFO for the holidays, I spent a lot of time playing with Bruno, who is such a darling and kept me from being too homesick for my babies. I noticed immediately how skinny he was so I questioned my sister about his weight and eating habits. She said they were just at the vet the week prior and he got a clean bill of health and his size and weight was PERFECT. So, It just dawned on me how chunky my babies have become . . . .as soon as I got home and carried them both, my suspicions were affirmed: they were both slightly "overweight" ( and that's putting it conservatively ). So I am now just giving them one full meal in the morning and in the evenings, they each have their kong (which has been in the freezer all day long) filled with food (similar to what they have in the mornings) to keep them busy in the evenings. When they have finished with it, I wait a while and then give them about 3 each doggie biscuits and 2 each yogurt drops which I stuff again inside the kong so it'll take a bit longer for them to finish. That's pretty much it at night. Oh I do give them an afternoon snack too and they share a stick of pupperoni (this treat was introduced to me when I got it as a gift exchange present and they both LOVED it ). But they just don't eat it - they work out and earn it. We always play go fetch when I come home for lunch . . . I throw 2 balls and they both bring it back to me for a reward. I break it into tiny, tiny pieces and I give them each at a time.

So am now wondering how much does everyone give their dogs . . . and am I not giving them enough?

It sounds like your furkids are very well treated indeed -- very well indeed.

That sounds good to me........it is more than what I give Mojo, but everyone is different - He gets his food in the mornings and since we are weaning him down to just once a day, he gets only a little food at night. He does get treats throughout the day - some for doing tricks, being good, just being cute (can't help it). But that is maybe 3-4 a day, tops.

Des, I didn't really answer your question..... I give my kids a lot of treats, of course they get Yorkie Yummies..... which are so teeny tiny -- I could probably give them 20 treats for every milk bone biscuit.... and you know what, the teeny tiny treat is "just right" and they love them... I also keep cheese handy for a tiny taste and they always have a couple of bully sticks to munch on.

I have read that their "Treats" should only be 10% of their daily food.

I stop buying treat for chelsea. She likes pupperoni but now I only gives dog food rolls as her treat. I cut the dog food rolls into small pieces so she can have a lot of treat without making her full. Most of treats in the market contain BHA and other preservatives. Dog food rolls have no preservatives and much cheaper. The $4 dog rolls can last for at least 1 month. She likes it so much and good for training. See below.

Sissy gets treats every time she comes back in from pottying. But, I break up a single very small sized bone into several pieces, so she may not even get a whole one each day. She does get pieces of fruit or tiny bits of cheese during the day in additional to her yogurt for breakfast and her boiled chicken and veggies for dinner....

Mine get a 'treat' first thing in the morning (cottage cheese with missing link). They always have free kibble in their bowl. They will have another snack before bedtime.

On the weekends, my hubby goes overboard with the treats though.

Oh I give them that too and they sure LOVE it. In fact, every morning after their "full meal" and both already done with their pooping and peeing rituals, we all go back to the bedroom so I can wake up my hubby. I bring his morning breakfast and of course a small portion of the rolls you are referring to. In the past, when my hubby eats, they both give him the "care to throw some down here" look. So, he has always given them scraps of whatever he is eating (mostly plain bread or fruit in itty bitty pieces). These days, I have decided that he can give those instead. And since they just had a full mean, they get very little - sharing about a quarter size of the roll shared between them

. That's another of our family bonding time together.

I do know the pupperoni isn't really that nutritious but being that they only eat a small fraction daily, it should be okay. The main bulk of their meal is all natural and organic anyway.

Hey Des...I understand where you are coming from. My two are not fat, but I feel that they could be and will be if something isn't done

In my house, though, my husband is the problem. I try to stick to a regular schedule, the natural balance rolls cut up in the morning and then Solid Gold Wee Bits at night. I give then tiny pieces of cheese for good pottys outside when they come in and when they come when I call them when they are outside. I'm talking tiny pieces (at least when I give them). My husband, though, man...is off the rails. On weekends he scrambles them an egg with bacon bits mixed in, he calls them their omelets...he was giving them 1 egg each, I have gotten that down to 1 egg between them. He also cooks them chicken, which I am fine with, but gives them wayyyyy to much of it. Also, on Sat nights he insists they have a Little Ceasers...I make him split that between them too, but if I am gone or didn't throw a fit, he would give them a whole one each. He started that one time when I was out of town, I threw a fit when I heard, but he says they love it and they should get "junk food" at least one night a week. He also think he is 'sneaking" them food from whatever he is eating, I have to really watch him. I keep telling him, it is really bad for these tiny bodies to carry extra weight, hopefully I am getting through to him.

Punkin gets some treats throughout the day - and often her treats are saved from her meals. Things like red peppers, apples, bananas etc. We weigh her every 2 weeks on a postal scale to make sure she hasn't gained anything.

We are conscious to feed her less on days when she is less active because it's too cold or wet out for walks.
Most days she gets a brisk 30 min walk - and if we can 45 - 60 minutes.

She is a lean dog, but the vet says that it means she will be generally healthier in the long run.

She weighs 8.5 pounds and the vert said 9 pounds is the absolute limit for her frame. The vet explained that dogs should have a waistline like people.
Now if only I could find mine

Hmmm...according to this thread I don't give my babies enough treats!

I don't have a treats feeding schedule like most of you seem to. Some days they don't get any treats at all, if I don't remember! My poor babies! I'm a bad mommy!

My kids love all cheeses, but they seem to like Imported Baby Swiss Cheese the best. I give them tiny pea size bites.

Hi everyone, it's probably been two years since I've posted on here. This thread caught my eye about food. I just got another Yorkie, his name is Knuckles - the breeder gave that name and we thought it was fun so we kept it. Anyway, I have Coco who is 2 years old and Knuckles who is 6 months. I have dry food out all the time, and they each get 1/2 a can of the little ceasers dog food, once in the morning, and then at dinner. They don't get table scraps. I sometimes give them dog treats. Normally my husband does after they've been outside. They have probably about 50 toys between them. They do get to chew on rawhides. THat's about it. Coco is a little long for a yorkie, and weighs I think 10lbs. Knuckles at 6 months is about 4lbs. I don't think he's going to get much bigger.
