After thinking about it a lot, and doing a lot of reading up on yorkies (here and elsewhere), I've decided I'd like to get a yorkie rather than a maltese. I'm still considering a russion toy terrier, but since they are SO obscure I will probably go for the yorkie.

Their personalities look just wonderful and so fun!

I am looking for these qualities:

sex: male
size: about 6-7 lbs grown (not an itty bitty one)
temperament: laid-back, loving, "cuddlebug" personality. I know yorkies are active, inquisitive little guys, but I also know that some are MUCH more active/hyper than others!
coat: I do not want a cotton coat.
looks: I prefer the lighter colored tan and silvery ones and a more "baby" face, though I'm pretty open about the color so long as its not super-dark.
health: must have health testing! for liver shunt especially.

I am a patient person, not in a rush, and will wait for the right puppy.

I'm mostly looking for breeders that have litters with some regularity whose breeding dogs have the traits I want. Temperament especially is really important to me.

Can anyone please recommend a good breeder that would sell me a puppy? Or are YOU a breeder that would? I've noticed that a lot of the high-end breeders are super picky about placement, and I'm afraid they wouldn't think I was good enough for their baby.

There are two other dogs in our house, one small (staffie) and one large (lab mix). The staffie is a little tank, quite the runt though, and our lab mix is just such a sweeheart. I called a well-known Maltese breeder in our area, mostly for information, and when I mentioned I was considering a maltese she immediately started grilling me. I could just hear the distaste in her voice after I told her we had a large dog, heaven forbid, and she didn't know what a staffie was and probably thought I had an PBT or an Amstaf. It was like I was a criminal trying to adopt a baby, and I felt about 2 inches tall.

(She then offered me an over standard size older puppy for a very high price.) I am well aware of the fact that little dogs cannot play with larger dogs (except gently) and must be supervised at all times when together! Our house is set up so that separation (without crates/pens even) will not be a problem. And the puppy will only be left alone rarely, such as for weekly errands.

I would prefer a breeder in central/nothern California, or maybe so cal, southern Oregon, or western Nevada, though am open to the option of shipping or flying to get a puppy.

And suggestions would be very appreciated!

I hope I don't get flamed for this though, I really would be a responsible yorkie owner even though we have other dogs.

I have a male pupppy that will just suit you when he is old enough BUT, I also have concerns about the larger dog.

Have you tried YTCA.org There are some wonderful breeders in California/Oregon and Nevada area.

I have two Yorkie babies and one VERY LARGE 95 lb. lab. She was raised inside and was full grown when I got both of my Yorkie babies.. She is PERFECT with them and even "tiptoes" around Hope who is only 4 lbs. I beleive it is all in how you raise your animals... I NEVER leave them alone together, not even in a different room when I am home, but I do allow the lab to play with them. She is a very gentle giant.

I know of a WONDERFUL breeder, in Ohio. I flew there to get Hopey and she was SOOO worth it... www.garlinyorkies.info She just had a new letter, on the 22nd I think. you can see my baby, and her others, on her site....

Mardelin ~ thanks for the suggestion! A lot of them are "show" breeders or have very very few litters, but some are really close by so I'll try calling them.

I second that!!! I happen to have the sister to Hopey, Faith (AKA Cucpake). Linda's babies are so lovable. You should definately give her your consideration.

YTCA is your best bet on finding a good yorkie breeder. Yes most of them are show breeders but... they can point you in the right direction on finding a breeder who may have pups. If I were you I would find a pup close to home so you do NOT have to fly this pup to you.

OOOO how cute she is!!! She looks so much like Hope except the coloring.. Hope looks like she is going to be all silver but they both have the cutest little face.... LOVe the updates!

I hope they dont all get tired of us tooting Linda's horn... she is so great!

just for the record, I did not fly my baby TO me, I flew TO her.... I flew there and picked her up personally..... I dont like the idea of flying those precious babies alone either... d
