Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | ![]() I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *77. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the *77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe &quiet place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *77 like Lauren did. Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information. *Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that *77 was a direct link to state trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *77. Send this to every woman (and person) you know; it may save a life. And for all of you who search in snopes i did to so here is the link this is true also read all the way down in the snopes it tells you some great advice as well http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.asp

| ![]() Thank you so much from a mother of 3 daughters who travel everyday on our roadways. I have always told them not to stop but to proceed to the nearest firehouse and blow the horn until someone responds. They all carry cell phones and I will make sure that they have *77 posted in their cars. Thanks again for posting... ![]() |

| ![]() If you check this out on snopes they aren't sure if it is true or not but the important part is about *77. It is not the same in every state and they suggest it is better to call 911 instead. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.asp Either that or check what the number is in your state before you might ever need it.

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | ![]() your welcome everyone i know we sometimes forget how cruel some people are and we can't trust anyone these days it's always nice to be reminded. As far a snopes that is why i posted it for all of you who are always trying to prove it's false! Ya know just because you read it somewhere it doesn't make it true or false but some of you are always trying to push that it's wrong well it is something that could happen and i would hope that you would take caution if this ever happens to you or someone you know. This is a major possibility and be safe not sorry

| ![]() I wasn't trying to prove it false. I just noted that snopes wasn't able to confirm this exact story. Women have been raped and murder after being pulled over by men impersonating police officers so this is a very good thing to warn people about. My point was that *77 does not work in every state. If someone just read the original post and did not read the rest at snopes they might not realize this. In an emergency sometimes every second counts.

| ![]() I just wanted to point out what I saw on Snopes -- was that it was #77 and not *77. Would probably be a good idea to check out which it is, and also make sure which numbers to use in your state... there were different ones noted... good post -- and something we should all be aware of! |
