Hi! We just adopted a 7 year old Yorkie from rescue and his hair is thinning just around his legs, stomach area... his history does show some allergy treatments and the vet just gave him an allergy shot on saturday (the day we got him). He was not sure if it was allergies or bad treatment since he was kept in a little cage all day laying in his own poop! how sad!

anyway - does anyone know if a vitamin or something will help.. or any ideas.. he has nice hair on his head and upper body (just a little brittle) help! Thanks!!!

Welcome! You could try Missing Link. It's full of vitamins and oils that these babies need. Also, a high quality dog food, good shampoos and conditioners are a plus.

CC Products carry Thick and Thicker . . .see if that helps!

First of all, I am not a professional animal person, Ha, I'm a nurse and have animals and do alot of research on them so I will tell what I know about hair loss. There are alot of reasons that dogs lose their hair. I'm assuming that there isn't any skin reddness or irritation on these areas? If so, this could be something else, a yeast/bacterial infection, a ringworm,mange or an allergic reaction that has caused intense biting or chewing. If there isn't any obvious skin problems, I would look into either a diet problem or a stress induced problem and with the history given, the later sounds to be more likely. Be sure that the current diet is a balanced diet with the proper % of minerals, enzymes, vitamens and protein. Science diet, Eukanuba and Iams are all well balanced foods.The stress should resolve itself with a new and loving home with you, bless you for taking him in! Linatone, is a great product available at PetSmart that is a oral solution for Skin and Coats. Nutrivite is a good line of vitamens and supplements.I hope you get this problem resolved!

I too am a nurse, but not an animal expert, although I rely heavily on the expert advice of my two vets. Jolene had thin hair when we got her. I feed Innova EVO, which has high protein levels, Merrick canned and supplement with Missing Link. I also use the CC Systems Day to Day kit with great success. Be patient and it will get better. Also, like teffiemoore said, you must rule out pathological causes first.

Thanks you guys!! The info is just what I needed.. I am going to try all of the suggestions. The vet did rule out mange and said it was not metabolic whatever that means... Charlie is on an antibiotic for 9 days to get rid of any infections.. he looks a little better to me already after 3 days! Hopefully it was all due to stress and that will be behind him - it is sad because he does not have a twinkle in his eyes like my other Yorkie- Cody. His eyes are dull. and he does not wag his tail either - I don't think he knows how to be happy yet!!!

Just like people hair - there are a million products out there that you can spend your money on -- and often waste your money.

I would say that your puppy will do best with a good diet, a good dog shampoo, and good grooming.

I think that a good short cut also helps. Whatever hair he had when you first got him was the product of not being well cared for. I would want to get rid of that hair and watch new healthier hair come in.

Missing link is a good suppliment. It has Omega Fatty Acids init which are good for the skin and coat. You can get it at Petsmart.

I am in the same boat with the Yorkie I just got free from a bad situation! He is about three, but his teeth says older and he is scaly on his back side! He has been treated for heart worms, which worries me too! I am concerned about his teeth, since they look pretty bad. His diet was table scrapes if you can believe it! Darn! He is so pretty and sweet! I will have my Vet check him out and I have read so many suggestions and I will do them, but what about the teeth and the past history of heart worms?

If the heartworms did any permanant heart damage, this can affect circulation in the little guy and that in turn can affect the hair and skin, but changing his poor diet can make a mountain of a change for him. His teeth of course can be cleaned, if theres any broken or rotten one, they can either be filed down to where they aren't having any sharp edges or they may need to be pulled

. People just have no idea what effect neglecting our pets can have on them. It really upsets me. At least he has you now. I would definately have him checked out by the Vet. and make sure his heart if OK. If the heartworms were treated early, he more than likely has no damage and will be fine with some TLC and good food. Good luck with him. I hope you come back and tell us how he's doing.

I had him checked out today and had him groomed and he looks soooooooo much better. He got a good check up at the Vet's but he does place him older than the person told me. His heart and lungs are good sounding and I got some medicated shampoo for him too. I will get him on antibotics and have his teeth cleaned. He is really at home already, althought my little princess yorkie is trying to get used to him being in her house. Jackson is a sweetheart to say the least and I also forgot, but the Vet said he is starting with cataracts!!! Gee! So, I only hope 6 or 7 and not 12!!!!!lol. I have him on Nutro Natural Balance small bites. Will update as soon as teeth are cleaned.
