new breeder, not to sell, needs help!

Hi everyone,
It's very interesting reading all of your comments. You girls have quite the little family going on here. I need help. I have a beautiful 4 1/2 lb 14 month old girl & I want to have puppies. Only for me & only one time. I have no interest in making money, I just love my little girl & I can't find another of her quality. I believe that she is in heat now which is her 2nd heat & I really would love some input as to what are the signs, what should I do, how long to leave her with her "arranged boyfriend" & what to do then. As you can see I'm totally stupid & would be very grateful for some insight. Thanks a lot, Dallas

First of all welcome. The main signs to look for, she will be swollen first and then probably about 5 - 7 days maybe a day or two longer she may start to bleed a little it's more like spotting. Some dogs may not spot. This normally last for about 5 - 7 days depending on the dog. After she stops spotting she is ready to mate. When I breed Mollie I kept the male until she was no longer interested in him actually a couple days past that. She starting biting him. Then I knew she was done with him.

I hope this has helped. I know there are other members here that are a lot more knowledgeable than I am so, I'm sure you will get some great input to your question.

It is my advice since youve never bred before you should wait until next heat and do as much research as you possibly can into how to breed, why to breed, when to breed and if you should breed.

Breeding these little things are not for the faint at heart and should not be taken lightly. Because of their size and structure and genetics many things can go wrong and as a novice even worse risk the health of your mom as well as her impending offspring.

that being said here are some websites you can visit to answer many of your questions ...second find yourself an experienced breeder in your area that is willing to mentor you which will certainly minimalize the risk for a first time breeder. Build a strong relationship with your vet, have him on call 24 hours before your whelping is due in case of emergency.

Dallas, I think the advice from Kimberly is very good. I have read the info on Debbie Jensen's site and it is very informative. You don't really know what you are getting into until you read some of the information, or experience it yourself. It is NOT a walk in the park. It is, however, very rewarding when everything goes as planned.

this is really involved. I'm not squeamish at all & I know I can do this but now I must say, I'm pretty nervous about it. Is this just Yorkie's that can have a hard time b/c they're so tiny? I don't want to do ANYTHING that would hurt my girl. I waited 30 years for one of these dogs & I was so excited to finally get one I would just die if I hurt her. I tried to check for blood last night & she got mad at me & gave me a little growl. Is that normal?

turn your gal on her belly, relax her, then open her slightly and wipe tissue or cotton, no its not normal for them to growl, but girls are pissy like you and I around heat time PMSing

How old is your litte gal and what does she weigh? can you post a picture of her?? I would love to see her.

Hi Kimberly, Thanks for the reply. My little girl [Brandy] is 14 months old & she weighs 4 1/2 pounds. She looks like she would weigh about 3 so I was VERY suprised when she weighed 4 1/2. She is long & thin with a little pointy face. She looks very feminine. Everybody can tell she's a girl. I wish I could post a picture but unfortunately I don't have a digital camera & heck it took me writing to the administrator to figure out how to even write a note on here!! I would probably blow up my computer trying to download a picture! I know I'm prejudiced but she is the prettiest puppy I have seen in my 3 year search. There are a few on here that look just like her like...feminvstr...the picture that comes up right after the 2 yorkies with a red heart between them looks EXACTLY like Brandy. It is really amazing how much. It's funny but I read so many of your notes when I started looking at this web site. I was looking & looking for a note from you after your puppy had her babies so I decided to join so I could find out what happened. you are very interesting. Didn't you also write the note about the "cliques" on this site? I found that to be true within my 1st 2 notes! I would love to hear anything you can tell me. My advice to you is wait tell the next heat! We don't breed tell they are 18-24 months.Find you a good mentor to help you! These babies can get into trouble real fast! You have time she is still young! lily

you mention she is only 4.5lbs and thin, Dallas your little gal should be a sturdy little gal with a bit more weight on her for breeding. Please do yourself a favor a seriously search for a mentor in your area there are many fine breeders in TX I am sure that would be accomodating, the smaller the Bitch the larger the troubles!

Hey Kimberly, My nickname is Dallas, I live in Florida. People here are very funny about helping me. As a matter of fact a few of them told me that they don't want the competition & I should just be happy with Brandy. Well, I'm sorry but I want a few "grandpuppies" Is that stupid or what? By the way your puppies are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Why oh why don't you live closer?! They really are breathtaking! Brandy & Benz are mirror images of each other. If I read correctly you're getting ready to have a litter in a few weeks.....can I ask how much your puppies are? I'd sure LOVE to have one. As for your note....my vet said that Brandy is as big as she's gonna get. With what you said, does that mean I should never breed her? She looks to be the same size as Benz. How much does he weigh? Oh I feel so under the gun here. I don't want to hurt her but I want babies so bad I feel like a little kid waiting for Xmas eve! Just jumping in with my 2 cents. I would definitely hold off on breeding this girl right now 'til you have time to do a little more research. 4 1/2lbs is very small for a breeding female especially when not in the hands of a very experienced breeder. The risks of losing her are up there and you want to be very familiar with the health history of her entire pedigree and of the stud you are using. Just because she looks healthy doesn't mean she isn't carrying recessive genetic traits that could lead to serious health issues with pups. You have plenty of time to figure this out before her next heat and make a more well founded decision.

Ditto, 4 1/2 lbs. Thats pretty small to be breeding, You should really think about this some more. Don't mean you shouldn't, have you thought about what COULD happen, you could lose her, with her being that small. I don't want to sound negative, but please do some research first.
