feeding raw meat suggestions?

I am getting a puppy in 2 weeks. I wanted to do the raw diet with him but what about just feeding straight uncooked raw food? I have heard this is good as it develops their immune system.

For anyone who does it do I just purchase ground beef or turkey for example like wal mart and just feed it straight uncooked? I m sorry if this a dumb question but I am new at this raw feeding

No, I wouldn't go that route. I feed raw, and love it - but feeding 100% protein is not the way to go - you'd likely end up w/ an extremely sick pup. Also, you'd want to wait at least 2 weeks before switching anything when a new puppy comes to a home. I would spend a lot of time learning about raw diets before proceeding:

I feed Prey Model Raw. Wylie's mom gave you some good links! Here are a couple others:

Ground meat is not the best to start with. I'd actually start with a bone in chicken breast myself. Remove the skin for now and slowly add that in and I would sort of cut into it or shred it a little bit with a fork until she gets the hang of it. You will probably be able to feed a few days on that same piece of breast. Just either cut it into pieces too large for her to attempt to swallow whole or maybe cut in 1/2. Good luck!

tj mom do you actually cook the chicken breast or just out of the fridge uncooked you give it to him. I plan to feed him natures' variety as well but I thought uncooked raw twice a week maybe will also be good what do you all think. I am so exited and scared at the same time for my yorky puppy. I am sorry but I really want to do a good diet for my yorkie. I don't want to get into it that much but 10 years ago a got a s**t Zue puppy and when he was 2 he develop cancer has had seisues and by reading now and searching and now looking back I know is what I fed him. I have been reading this past couple of weeks all I can on raw food. I really want to start my yorkie right this time. I feel so guilty with my s**t Zue.

Thanks so much for the great sites for the raw food. I've been reading up on the raw food diet and would like to switch my Yorkie over to that. I'm a little nervous as she has a very sensitive stomach, but I feel that in the long run she needs what is best for her. Do you prepare the food or do you buy it pre-packaged (and if so which brand did you decide to go with). I'm trying to figure out what is best for her, how much everything costs and how I can fit it into our life (ie when we travel).

I feed Nature's Variety raw medallions. I like the pre-made because it's already balanced for their needs. And I settled on the NV brand because it's the only pre-made raw food available locally - I've been extremely happy with it and my dogs love it. I also free feed NV's Instinct kibble and really like their rotational diet. Good luck!

No, I do not cook the chicken at all. The bones, if uncooked are very pliable and they don't splinter. You would NEVER want to feed your pup chicken bones that have been cooked. I really do just take raw chicken, either boneless or with bone in and feed it to her. Chicken legs are better than wings as wings have a bit too much bone and not enough meat. While it may seem a little odd and scary at first, I would encourage you to research it and see if it is for you. My dogs have done wonderfully on it. And the added benefit is because of the bones, my yorkie has beautiful teeth, even the vet has remarked on how nice her teeth are!

You know, my collie always had a sensitive tummy but she took to the raw and really did wonderfully, she actually just passed away (she was 12). I made the switch to raw about a year ago after the vet told us that she thought she might have cancer. We never confirmed it but she did so well for the last year that I really am glad I made the switch for her sake and I only wish I had done it years ago, maybe she'd still be with us!

I feed PMR! I just read the blog of Dr. Paula, but i don't see anything saying she feeds raw to her dogs. Does she? She talks a lot about raw and homecooked meals.

Just wanted to voice how awesome the raw feeding is, and Many Many thanks to Wylies Mom for helping me get my baby Chilly on the raw food, and for her always answering my hundreds of questions, supporting me the whole way, she is indeed an angel, because I was actually scared to do this, along with the help of a new holistic vet along side Wyllies Mom's advice IT's AWESOME! it's been about a month and my baby can not get enough of his Stella & Chewy's frozen Duck Duck Goose and freeze dried patties. Feeding time for him is exciting, he jumps around and gets soooo excited to eat now, not the boring kibble. And another amazing thing I thought was bad but the vet assured me it was not is that he hardly is drinking water from his water bowl, the vet say's if we eat the right food that gives him all he needs diet is everything and let me tell you I am sold on the raw diet for my little guy, and the poop thing is amazing, no stinky big poop anymore...I'm just so excited I had to share, I have never ever seen my dog so excited about eating his food and wanting more when he's done.

I am also considering switching to raw! I only recently found out that Royal Canin is not a very good food and I want to start the pups on raw asap. I want them to be healthy and strong. Amazingly, I have found two raw food suppliers within 10 miles of where I live! Hopefully, we can start soon - I have to organize a bigger freezer.

I agree. Natures Variety raw medallions may be the way to go initially as they are RAW and a completely balanced diet. It takes the guess work out of feeding raw. With a new developing pup you want to make sure they get everything they need. It may seem expensive but once you see how little they actually need, I don't find it much more expensive than a high quality kibble.

Today I went to a natural pet store in my area and I bought the NV 3lb bag medallions yeah Now when My yorkie arrives I went to the NV web site and i calculated from their web site and it says he needs approx 1.3 that mean one medallion a day right? do you just give the whole medallion or break it half in the morning or half at night? How often should I feed my 10 week yorkie when he comes home? I know you supposed to feed him often to prevent hypoglecimia , but how often?

Awww! Good for you! I personally would feed him 3-4 times a day for now. You can cut down as he gets older and my Zoe decided about a year ago that she only wants to eat once a day and so that's what I do but she's a little over 2 now. And if it say's 1.3, then I would just feed 1 and 1/2 medallions per day. You'll probably have to cut them in halves or thirds for now. And keep an eye on how he does. Make sure he is putting on weight. You might want to buy one of the postal scales off of ebay. I got mine on ebay and paid just under $20 with shipping. You see how small the medallions are but they really don't eat much at this age so don't be too scared by that. Good luck and keep those questions coming!
