Are shots really necessary???

I'm taking Maggie (3.5 lbs.) to the groomer tomorrow. The groomer is in the Vet's office. They say she is due for shots, rabies, distemper, kennel cough, and heartworm check.

I lost my other Yorkie last week due to heart failure and I'm a bit shell shocked right now. I don't want Maggie to have all those shots. I know it's irrational, but I'm afraid she will have an adverse reaction.

Can they force me to give her shots? She had a kennel cough shot six months ago. I know rabies are a state law, and I do want the heartworm check, but is it really necessary to get distemper and kennel cough.

She is never in contact with other dogs, never goes outside. I just feel that the vet can be a total ripoff with this stuff.

Advise, please, this isn't the right time for me to be making decisions. Oh, it's so hard to lose a beloved Yorkie... I'm just so glad that I have Maggie. I bought her when Munchie's health started to fail, best thing I ever did.

I know it's scary, but IMO it is necessary. If you ever take your baby to the groomers or have her anywhere that there are going to be other dogs, you need the kennel cough shot. And, so far as the distemper shot goes, definately. I've seen too many dogs die a long, suffering death at the hands of distemper. It, like kennel cough, is extremely contagious. Like I said, I know it's scary, but to me it would be even scarier to run the risk of my baby getting either of these diseases.

No doubt about it, I know things can be scary after a lose but, It is far more of a risk if you dont have the shot's. Like the last person said they can pick it up from anywhere. Just going to the pet store in your arms would be too much of a risk for me. I'm am truly sorry for your lose but, for your babys sake get the shot's.

I'm not sure any groomers will take pets who haven't had their shots. I could be wrong though. I know you are still devestated from your loss but I would hate to take a chance on taking my baby anyplace where other dogs have been if he didn't have all of his shots.

Kennel cough shots are good for 6 mos. My vet squirts the stuff up the nose, other than giving the shot. Most of them require you to have their shots done before they get groomed, I'm lucky, my next door neighbor is my groomer, and they've never asked for proof of shots..The only ones I give mine are the rabi shots, and I've got 2 of mine that are past due on them now, but, they never leave my house..Ours don't require the kennel cough to be groomed nor the distemper..The only 2 I get distemper shots for are the 2 outside dogs..How old is your baby? I know when I had 3 young pups a few years back, one of them got kennel cough from the vets office, and then the other 2 pups got it, but, the older dog(she was 5 at the time) didn't get it..the vet said usually it's the little ones that get it..

Maggie is two years old, and we did all the shots just a little bit over a year ago, except for kennel cough which was six months ago.

I know I need to just have them do it, I'm being irrational, just scared because she is all I have to cling to right now. She was fine before, no reason for me to think she will have a reaction, I'm just panicking. Thanks for making me think more clearly, I certainly don't want to take any chances with her. She's a healthy, happy little bundle of love. Oh what would we ever do without our Yorkies...

I have taken mine to two different groomers before and neither one of them would groom without proof of rabies.

All the shots are def. necessary i believe. They would be more susceptible to catching diseases and sickness w/o them

theone time i took my moms yorkie to the groomer (at petco of all places), all they asked for was the name of the vets place... so i told them.. i didnt remmeber the drs name but they didnt give me trouble at all.. they just said ok he'll be ready in 2 hours.

how would you provide proof?? drs number or something?

You can spread the shots over two visits. I would get the rabies shot at a separate visit.

I wouldn't get them all at once. I would space them out some. Get the rabies vaccination first and the the others. I did that with Diesel. I think getting them all at once can be a bit much. When my daughter was a baby I never let her get more than 1 shot at a time. Most were combined shots so I didn't have a choice.

No Vet. can "make" you get shots for your dog if you don't want. Some have never attended the siminar's that tell them about the studies and the effect over inoculating has on animals.

My Vet doesn't recommend shots but every three years. There was a 10 year study done on over inoculating and found that most dogs were protected for up to 8 years. When my girls reach three years after their last shot, I am going to have the titer test done instead just to see if they need anything.

Whenever I took mine to Petsmart they either wanted a copy of the rabies certificate or if I forgot to bring that they would call my vet & confirm that a rabies shot had been given, my normal groomer does the same thing.

I am sorry and I completely understand.. 4 years ago, my vet at the time, killed my pooh with kennel cough. I lost a huge amount of trust at that time.
but my new vet does NOT give a full set of shots at once.. he gives a half of a shot, then two weeks later I go for the other half.. he will not do the parvo etc. the same time he give rabies.. I pay him for the shots the first trip and then we take them back in until all shots are done.. at no extra costs..
You have the right as a yorkie owner to protect you baby.. but you need to talk to your vet and tell him this is the way I want things done.. and stand your ground..
