another bile acid test question

Hey all. Ok going to book a BAC for Layla sometime this month (she has no signs of liver disease.. it's just a preventative thing.. plus it wasn't done by her breeder as she doenst' believe in witholding food for 12 hours on small pups.. i agree ) anyways... so i know they test once before eating and once after. Those who have had this done.. do you bring your own food? also layla is a ridiculously finicky eater (it is 2:30) she still hasnt' touched her lunch and she gets a bit stressed at the vet and i know she won't eat there... anyone have any suggestions or ideas?? i know she will be upset that i've left her there and she isn't big on eating on a scheduale... and i odn't wnat her there till lke 4 pm just because she hasn't eaten.. anyways.. if anyone can let me know what they have done.. that owuld be great

The first two times Ellie was given Science Diet A/D (the meal is supposed to be high in fat and possibly protein (?). She was hospitalized for the two hours in between. The third time she couldn't have the A/D since she is allergic to corn. The vet okayed Innova canned but said if I thought it would make her itchy I could give her whatever she has been eating. I also got to bring her home in between this time to feed her. It just depends on your vet. I know the A/D is horrible but I pick my battles. It is just one time, so I let them use it. They said if Ellie wouldn't eat they would force feed her. But she is a piggy so she ate.

hmm.. maybe they will let me bring in a canned food.. Layla i'm sure would GOBBLE that up... i hate AD too... thanks for the info.. i wasn't too sure how it worked... but if she even mentions force feed.. we'll be looking for a new vet

Haha, the vet tech mentioned it in our case. I didn't like the idea but I force Ellie to drink and I used to have to force a pill down her throat everyday, so there is really no difference for us. I would rather they do that then her have to stay there in a germ pit with other sick animals and be lonely all day.

You can typically bring in your own food Also, request that they do it early in the morning...Sometimes they will let you bring her home to feed her, but you have to bring her back before the two hours is up...

Cali had to stay in between tests so they could monitor her blood sugar with her history of hypoglycemia.

I did not have to take any food. I just took him first thing in the morning and got him a few hours later..less stressful for him...

Diggy didnt take in his own food but he did eat and it was AD they gave him. Id just call your vet and ask. Good luck!!!

its usually AD that is given because its the most palatable. they need to eat something for the test to work and if force feeding is what needs to get done then it has to be done. the food is usually just syringed in their mouths. nothing is really "forced" down their throats. its nothing terrible for them

My vet actually prefers that you bring in their regular food for them to be fed, I guess it all depends on the vet.
Perhaps you can stay there so they can do the bloodwork before she eats and then you can feed her yourself which may help comfort her knowing that you are there.
