Did anyone get their puppy at 5 weeks old?

My friend found a breeder who has puppies and the breeder told her she would let her take the puppy at 5 weeks old. She said she has done this before for another person before. She said that someone has to be home all the time to watch the puppy until she gets older, which is fine because her mother in law doesn't work so she will be home (the dog is actually for her). I told her that is way too young but told her I would ask and see if anyone here knows if this will mess up the dog or anything. I know it's not the [I]ideal[I] situation/age but the dog is in another state and this is the only time she can get the dog unless she waits and has it shipped, which is an additional cost. What do you think??

Oh no that is WAY TO YOUNG and that doesn't sound like a good breeder to me not to let a baby go at that age

I know there have been a few here who have, but dont recommend it, thats way to young, I got karleigh at 7 weeks and it was a struggle for me, Is there anyway the breeder could hold her for a few more weeks. wishing her the best, i hope all goes well for her and her new babie

That is way too young in my opinion. How sad for the puppy!
They need to be at least 10-12 weeks old.

whoa that sounds way too young to me and i have never heard of a reputable breeder letting a baby go that young

I got one of mine at 6 weeks and that is too young. He became stressed and got sick. I would wait and have the puppy shipped

Yeah, poor puppy won't have the proper temperament as taught by the mother. It should have constant involvement with the mom and or/siblings until at least 10 - 12 weeks of age.

Cost of shipping will be priceless compared to having a puppy who was taken away at such a young age.

It is way to risky getting a puppy that young. The puppy cannot possibly be weaned yet. Then there is the long trip home....how is she getting the puppy home if it is out of state. It would be very hard traveling with a puppy that young. For the safety of the puppy she needs to wait until the puppy is older. The puppy needs time with its mother and litter mates so it can learn to socialize.

We got Roxy at 6 weeks - the day she got her 1st set of shots and she did fine. 2 days after we got her we drove 700 miles and moved into a home with a 150+ lb samoyed. Not one problem. We got Remi the day after his 2nd set of shots(8 weeks) - and, again, not one problem. I know we are blessed to have two healthy pups and I say my ThankYou's every day .

Yeah, I thought it was too young but she wanted me to ask people here. She isn't going to get this pup. She is going to get an older one. Thank you all for you help!!

I would find another breeder, that's way to young!!

What? 5 weeks that is not a good age at all to get a puppy! I do not think a reputable breeder would sell a puppy this young at all! Besides that most states have a law against people selling a puppy younger then 8 weeks old!

Tell your friend that if that puppy is taken from it's mother and siblings too soon, it will miss very important lessons that will effect it's personality and make training much more difficult.

Puppies learn bite inhibition from their mom and littermates between 5-8 weeks of age. People who get their puppies too young often complain about the problem they have with their puppies biting them. It can be a very hard habit for humans to break.

The Fear Imprint stage occurs between 8-11 weeks. Shipping a puppy or taking him away from his littermates and mom during this period can be very traumatic and have a lasting effect on his personality.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club rules require breeders not to sell a puppy under twelve weeks old. Tell your friend if she is dealing with a breeder who breaks this rule, she is not dealing with a reputable breeder.
