Clickers? i bought a clicker to train my dog. It was very inexpensive and figured why not! I have never used one, but I have also never had issues training any of my pets. I have a 5 month old Yorkie who will NOT come to save his life. He does it ONLY when he wants too. I was wondering if anyone has used those, and if so were they any good? |
I don't use mine exactly as intended...but I give my girls a treat every time they run to me when I click it. It is soooo easy to click it twice and have 5 Yorkies at my feet waiting for their reward. I bought four of them so I can attach one to the jackets I wear when I am out with the dogs. |
i'm so scared that when I am out in the front of my yard he may run into the street. He seems to be very stubborn |
Clicker training is great if you use it as intended: for marking desired behavior :thumbup: Here is a very good resource for clicker training.. Clicker Training Basics | Karen Pryor Clickertraining |

Read "Don't Shoot the Dog" and watch some of the videos. I saw one video where they had clicker trained a cat, horse, and fish!!! You can get "Clicker Puppy" on Netflix. |

Clicker training was an EPIC fail here. The noise was like fingers on a chalkboard to our yorkie! She just hated it--not matter how big the treat. She regressed in all behaviors when we used it. So, it went in the drawer of shame and we renewed our reward positive behavior plan. It works great! |

so far so good!!! Yoda is responding very well with it. I have to buy different treats or else he may get burned out on the ones that I have. I didn't do it the way the pack that it came in suggested, BUT I will say I will not "clicked" it if I do not have a treat handy and I only use it for the positive, not when he does something wrong (like have an accident). So I am going to give it a big thumbs up! |
There are two quiet clickers you can try. One is by Premier (the purple one) and the second is a battery operated clicker by Karen Pryor and you can choose different sounds. But you can save your money if you just use a retractable ball point pen. |
The clicker that Karen Pryor sells makes a softer sound that my yorkies respond to very well |
I read that you can also use a word not normally used in conversation instead of a clicker, such as "bueno," or "excellent." Like the clicker, you give a treat after you say the word, rewarding the dog for good behavior. You want to say the word while the dog is in the process of doing a good thing, but only say the word once. |
I haven't tried a clicker, but found the Tamar Geller training video on "teaching your dog to come" very helpful. You can watch it here: Training Videos Presented by Dog Life Coach Tamar Geller | The Humane Society of the United States |
sad thing is... I have labs too (3 of them) and a peek-a-poo, and even though we sent them to obidience school, they hear the clicker and they almost trample my baby trying to get a treat, and the clicker isn't even meant for them. UGH! I'm exhausted!!! |

Just found this thread. I just bought a clicker but never used one before. Jackson knows about 14 tricks from just me telling him "yes" and treating him but I think having a clicker may be useful. I'm gonna read the link posted! |
I think a clicker would be nice, but sadly Scruffs gets so scared of the noise he stops eating treats, even boiled chicken. It's a worth a shot, since they are like 50 cents at Petsmart. |

I tried the soft clickers too (he was still scared). The trainer said try a snapple cap, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. For treats try boiled chicken. It really is the best treat out there. |
You can use the click of a pen. in your pocket and even inside of something to make it quite. You can also start with the word yes and once the dog know it the word that is loaded you can slowly match the yes with the clicker in you pocket muffled with tape. If that is still not working use light. aUse a falsh light a quick on and off and that can be your visual click. then once that is understood you can match the click with the flash and switch over. Stick the pen in your pocket as well may help. Dogs have amazing hearing so do not worry he will not hear it. Yes do keep us up dated. Please JL |
He is better with the normal clicker. I ordered a soft clicker I think he just needed some getting used to. Before he was so scared of it he just cowered but now he will eat a treat. He is wary of going through the tire jump in agility since the trainer would use the clicker. Poor guy :(. I have a lot of dogs here for a holidays so once they leave I can focus on his training more. I need to boil some chicken that will definitely help. |

maybe I should try boiled chicken? |
I ordered a soft clicker and he seems to not be scared of it so far! This is good! |
I just want to say how good the clicker is. He is no longer scared of it at all, and knows it means a treat. He is doing a lot better with tricks just after one session. I am so proud of him. I bought this one: He was scared of the clickers from Petco (the regular, cheap kind). I am a little confused if I am supposed to always treat after the clicker? So far I am. I think you stop once the behavior is learned. Does anyone have any good sites or videos that explain it? I found a few by searching on here, but there's always more to learn! |
