Question Dick Van Patten's NB Potato & Duck Allergy Formula?

Does anyone here feed this to their baby(s) who have allergies? I have some of it here, it was my mom's Yorkie (Kenzi)'s food but she switched her over to NV Raw so she gave the bag of food to me incase I wanted to try Tatum on it since Tatum has really bad allergies. Both Stedman and Tatum are currently on RV Raw, however I was wondering about Natural Balance Potato & Duck since it is formulated for dogs who have allergies. I know some here might not agree that it is the best food (meat IS NOT the first ingredient on the list) - HOWEVER....at this point I am honestly willing to try it if it will help her. She just goes absolutely nuts with her itching and I cannot stand it anymore and I know that she can't either. I just feel so sorry for her

Anyway, I would really like to hear from those who feed this to their babies that do have allergies. Does it help AT ALL??? Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for your help Lenora! To be honest I really am not even sure what is causing Tate's allergies. When the vet determined that she had them, I asked if we should do allergy testing and he said that the list would probably just come back a mile long and that there really wouldn't be any REAL WAY to pin point EXACTLY what she was allergic to - so we didn't do it.

Can I ask though, have you noticed any weight gain at all since your babies have been on this food? I just want to make sure that this doesn't happen as I am trying to get little miss chunky to lose weight....don't want her to get any chubbier than she already is lol

Nope all my guy's have been the same weight for year's.

You should take notice when she itches Watch everything.
Duck is the only meat Brownie can eat,Spring & fall he's super itchy with hives. he's not allowed out after we cut the grass.
All of his bedding gets No softener. & washed often, we dont use Any Rug powders,we now only clean With diluted vinegar,I vacuum Everyday,He get's vegetarian treats Or yogurt drops Only,I keep his hair short So i can spray any itchy spots with hydrocortisone spray,He get's Oatmeal baths No perfume bathing product's.I dont even use perfume on myself anymore Because it made him reverse sneeze.

Natural Balance is a good food. I'd give it a go. if your afraid of her getting chubby (er -- lol) then just feed her less of it. same as you would do with raw.

I have the same issue here. Pebbles is scratching ao much she is making me itch. I just purchased the sweet potato and venason version and an hoping for a miracle. They both seem to love it and I have already noticed they are eating less food and pooing less too.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for both our pupster to feel better and to stop all of this scratching.

Thank you so much for all the great info girl! I had no idea that poor little Brownie had such bad allergies too Although it seems that alot of Yorkies have bad allergies. I don't use fabric softener on Tatum's blankets and clothes either, and when I wash them I use ALL Free/Clear - no scents or dyes what so ever. We recently had wood floors installed in the living room, kitchen, hall and entry, so the only place we have carpet is in the bedrooms and I keep all of the bedroom doors closed all day long as I don't want the babies going in there and getting into things I do vacuum/sweep over all the floors twice daily though - and sometimes three times a day if I have time. Tatum also LOVES the yogurt drops and so does Stedman...they go nuts for them As for the shampoo - I use Doc Ackerman's Natural Colloidal Oatmeal Shampoo from Only Natural Pet. It is WONDERFUL with excellent ingredients and really does seem to soothe her ALOT after her bath. It is a shampoo that I HIGHLY recommend!

Thank you so much Kellie! You know I always trust your opinions and advice so if you say it's a great food, then I believe it is I am going to start her on it either tonight or tomorrow morning and just see how she does with it. It says the minimum she can have is 2/3 cup per day, so that is what she will get. I feed her 2 x's a day, so she will get half of 2/3 cup twice daily

Aw, Taters.

Which raw flavors have you tried/not tried? It would surprise me if allergies got better on kibble, but one never knows - stranger things have happened.

I'm not a big fan of DVP's food bc the protein content is low. If it were me, at this point - if I wanted to go the kibble route, I'd do a fish kibble. I think Wellness Core Ocean is great - the protein content is in the 30s, they kept their ingredients reined in a bit, and it's just an excellent kibble overall. Fish is hypoallergenic too - and not something she has tried yet. But again, since she's currently on raw - I kind of doubt this is food related (were you feeding beef and chicken though?).

I *think* I know what state you're in, but I don't want to type it out since you don't have it in your avatar - but I was looking at Pollen.com - and I think the allergens are high right now where you are, so I wonder if it's just seasonal?

This has got to be so frustrating Brooke!

Thanks Ann! Tatum has only had the Lamb and Venison flavors in the raw - no Chicken or Beef And I totally hear ya about the protein content of the NB...I do know that it's low, and meat ISN'T the first ingredient on the list and I would definitely prefer that it would be, BUT....at this point I tell ya girl, I am just about willing to try anything You might be totally right too - it may not help in the slightest...but darn, I figure it won't really "HURT" to try I do LOVE feeding the Raw...I know that it's a fantastic food and the kiddos absolutely love the stuff...but I thought I'd just give an allergy formula specific food a shot, just so I can say that I tried it LOL.

Oh - and about the Wellness Core Ocean...ya know, I am going to try that out too. I DO have the Wellness Core Original, as well as the Wellness Core Reduced Fat (for Mrs. Chubs) - but we are going out of town this weekend and I am going to pick up a bag of the Ocean as none of the Core products are available where I live. I had to get the owner of one of the local pet stores here in town to order the Original and Reduced Fat Wellness formulas, but STUPID ME didn't order the Ocean - HOW DUMB!!! She was on the Orijen 6 Fish a while back and MAN oh MAN did she and Stedman both LOVE the food, but WOW Tatum gained a TON of weight on that stuff - and FAST!! It blew my mind how quickly she gained...I was just amazed. SO, needless to say, since she was already a chub, I had to take her off of it. Shortly after that I think is around when we started the Raw. And as for the Pollen levels here...yes I'm sure they are SKY HIGH.... I've checked a few times, in the past, and we were always the highest on the charts - sickens me!!! LOL

Aw, geeze, do I know this awful feeling.

You gotta give it a whirl or you'll never know. You know, after reading the above too (w/ the FAST gains)...there really could be something going on w/ her metabolism, even if she is *not* hypothyroid via lab tests (just as in humans). The more I'm hearing, the more this makes me wonder.

It really does seem like there is, doesn't it? My mom has been telling me for a while now that I need to have it checked out - and hubby also. And it's funny because Stedman was on Orijen and he gained a little (I'm talking a couple ounces) - but Tatum gained I don't even remember how much....almost half a pound (maybe even more) in a VERY, VERY SHORT time. I'm telling you, it was just crazy fast. And - Stedman lost the couple of "ounces" that he gained whereas I was NEVER able to get Tatum to lose an OUNCE of what she gained on the food.

OH! And I also meant to tell you that the vets I've talked to have also said that allergy tests are expensive and largely unreliable bc, like you said, you end up with a list a mile long, so where does it get you? Back to square one, like you were thinking .

Yeah, I don't get this weight gain. It almost sounds similar to what they're now learning with some humans - that there are indeed some humans who, despite *not* overeating, they cannot lose weight. And it has to do with leptin and blah blah. Not that this may have anything to do with Tatum - but my point is, there are so many reasons she could be holding weight - some of which we don't even have the answers to yet. So, I do think you're on to something here, even if it isn't the thyroid.
