Newbie/crate help! Hello! I’m brand new to both this site AND to being a Yorkie owner!! My last two dogs were large, and very easy to train, so with my little stinker I’m trying to read as much as I can to do this right!! Ginger is 14 weeks old, and we have had her two weeks. I’ve already read through posts and gotten great ideas, but I’m stumped by my current issue. Ginger will sleep 8 hours through the night with no problem and no accidents in her crate- which is awesome! However, during the day she without fail will pee within an hour or two. I always take her outside right before putting her in, and wait until she goes twice (she had a habit of going once outside, then coming in and immediately peeing on my carpet). I don’t if this makes a difference, but at night the cage is full sized, during the day I make it smaller- just large enough to lie down, turn around, etc. Any wisdom the veteran Yorkie owners have would be greatly appreciated!! |
Interesting enough I have the same problem. My Yorkie baby is 18 weeks old and sleeps all night, no accidents. If I leave and go to work for 4-5 hours he has an accident. I take him out and then don’t allow him to get any water before putting him in the crate. I think he’s getting better with the separation anxiety as he is moving about the house without me right by his side. |
When they are up and active they drink more and are going to pee more. It is recommended to take them out every our when potty training. When you can watch them they should be in a play pen. |
I wish I could offer you more than "have patience". Yes it takes a while for the babies to grasp it early on with crate training during the day if you're not home to take out every hour. When I worked outside the home, I would come home at lunch (that's the 4-5 hour mark). Use this rule of thumb for however old the puppy is in months think thats how many hours they can hold their pee. At 14 weeks the puppy is just over 3 months so your puppy will most likely have an accident at 3 hours. Consistency on potty time is key as once the puppy's learn the routine they won't have to or feel comfortable in using it in their crate. A lot of people work outside the home and its totally possible to have a yorkie and potty train them, it just takes a lot longer. It look my first yorkie 18 months and my current yorkie about 8 months (that shorter time as because I work from home). |
For mine, I got her when she was 11 weeks old. She was pee pad trained. I noticed that she went every hour or two depending on how active she was. Back then, she needed pee breaks with her sleep as well .. every 4 hours I think. I decided to hold off on potty training outside since I want her to fully get pee pad usage. I ended up getting an xpen for her and left a pad for her. Back then I came back home every four hours and there would be 1-2 pee spots on the pad. At 4 months, I trained her to potty outside. With lots of positive reinforcement, she now prefers going outside. Now at 9.5 months I leave her 6 to 10 hours on workdays with freedom to explore the main floor. I leave her xpen open now but leave a pad there just in case. No accidents so far! |
