Shipping/packing/wrapping ???s I don't ship things very often, so I wondered if anyone would answer a couple of questions for me.... 1. Shipping: I know we're supposed to ship w/tracking and confirmation, but what company would be the safest/most economical, etc... (I remember that at least Jenn298 can't receive FedEx where she lives but don't know about anyone else) What about insurance? I'm assuming it's a good idea. What about having someone sign upon receipt? 2. Packing: Any packing tips? Someone posted during another GE that their gift came wrapped in piddle pads. What about about bubble wrap? Tissue paper? Should we worry about certain packing materials? Is it a good idea to wrap the present for the mom separately from the gifts for the yorkie? Should we take off the little labels that are attached for safety or will the moms want to read those? 3. Decoration: Is a box that is decorated in a cute way appreciated or a waste of time? Is it expected or will someone think I'm weird. (Okay, yes I'm weird! LOL) |
LOL decorate that box! |
VERY GOOD QUESTIONS, JUDY. :) I'm anxious to hear the answers also. |

here is what the rules say on shiping: so delivery confirmation and insurance is needed . Tracking Numbers / Confirmation Numbers / Insurance - Please insure your package and get a tracking number (or delivery confirmation with the US Postal Service). This is a requirement. It will let us know where your package is and the status of it so your buddy can also be updated. You must use a shipping service that either has a tracking number or delivery confirmation number (either US Postal Service, UPS, or Fedex). The shipping services DO lose packages and it would be a shame if your secret buddy did not get the package due to no fault of your own. We have had an average of two lost packages per gift exchange thus far. Insurance has come in very handy in several cases already. Packing.....I had thought of wrapping in pee pads since all mine do is chew them up lol but I didnt know if they would still use them all wrinkled up?? as for decorating the box, Go for it!! I bought a few things to decorate mine once its taped shut, so I say go for it. I left the tags on mine..but it is up to you. |
Everyone gets postal mail. Its not that expensive and they provide tracking and insurance for a small fee. They have many ways to ship too. If your box is very heavy I would use parcel post, but it will take longer to get where it is going. Usually unless its very heavy, you could ship priority mail for just a few cents more then first class and it gets there in 2 to 3 days. As far as packing, use what ever is the lightest. Bubble wrap is great it doesn't weigh anything! I think if you decorate the box that will just make it even more exciting. Don't forget a picture of your pup to send along with the presents! |

1. so cute 2. stuff I needed to know too So, thanks. |
I always ship via USPS Priority Mail. They provide a tracking # and you can also purchase insurance for inexpensive if you'd like. Priority mail is usually delivered in 2-3 days and is probably the most reasonable way to ship!!! I always make sure the box is packed so there isn't much wiggle room, any type of packing stuff works!!!!!!! You can decorate any way you want!!!! |
I think that wrapping the stuff in peepads is a great idea!!! We ALWAYS need peepads! Speaking of which...I think we're due for a trip to Wal-Mart for some tonight lol |

Not sure about shipping, other than that I don't think you should have someone sign upon receipt-We might not be home since we're working, and we'd hate to miss our package! If someone wants a signature upon receipt-maybe post that in a separate thread? I would definitely say to insure that package! There's lots of fun cargo in them! I love the wrapping in Pee Pads-just make sure your yorkie buddy uses them, and isn't an "outside potty-er" before sending away those precious commodities! I would LOVE a decorated box! How fun, exciting and personal! It's not weird. I'm probably decorating too! |
Thanks everyone! |
I loveeeeee a decorated box! |
Everyone had great ideas, but thought I would jump in too!!! Quote:

I am sosoo sorry I had your username wrong! I have trouble keeping everyone straight at times. Thanks for the ideas! |
This was a great post. I am decorating my package just a little bit. In case thepeople recieving it are expecting packages from elsewhere ( for example Ebay, shopping on line etc.) I know my mom gets packages in the mail almost everyday. This way if the packageis decorated, theywill know itis from the GE. At least thats what i was hoping. |
hey I got a bunch of those styrofoam peanuts to pack with :p I hate those things! (I don't think I could do that to someone else) |
Isn't there some things you're not supposed to put on the package for shipping? Like things that will get ripped or stuck in machines or whatever? Anyone heard of that? |

I was in line at the PO once and this woman was trying to ship a box that had wrapping paper on it. It was not a good wrapping job. The postal worker kept giving her "looks" and had to tape almost the whole box... so it ended up not looking nice at all. |
OK...here's the best info I could find. If you buy a pretty mailing box that has nothing stuck or glued to the outside, you will be okay. You could wrap the box INSIDE the mailing box, or...write on the outside with colored markers, NOT STICKERS. You can use colored tape to seal it, etc... Just be careful that the label is clear and legible and there is nothing to come off into the machinery, etc... If anyone else heard anything differently or can add to this, please post that info here. Hope this helps! :) |
" Thanks " Judy for the info and everyone else also. :) I was thinking of using those colored permant markers to decorate my box a little. That way if for some reason the box is out in rain before the GE buddy & his family would get it, the ink wouldn't run on the box. |

Thanks for getting the info for us!!! |
The tracking number cost about $10 more over here  so I never got one. Is that ok? I would rather spend the extra money on gifts rather than a tracking number. I don't remember how much the insurance cost. For stickers, the last time I didn't even think about the pop up stickers falling off. The lady was real nice and put tape over them. I guess different places have different rules about stickers. I bought stickers for this time too. Btw, don't be shocked if they give you weird looks when u take a decorated box:) Also, they always ask if there is food. I always say no (not a complete lie because they are treats and not food:)) Why do they ask? Should I tell them there are dog treats or tell them no? |
Did you get a delivery confirmation number? I would pm ADMIN and see what they tell you if you didn't get that at least. IDK about food....anyone else know? That's a great question. |
Shipping Food Food Shipping: According to the USPS guidelines, there are two kinds of food for their purposes...perishable and nonperishable. If you need to know about how to ship perishable food items, just go to the USPS website. Nonperishable items are those items which will NOT spoil. This would include dry dog treats, cookies, candy, etc... So, if what we ship is nonperishable, then we have nothing to worry about. I think they are asking the question about food to make sure you aren't shipping anything perishable. Those items need special handling. Some even need to be refridgerated. Hope this helps. |

Thanks! This time I won't say no. |
Well, and "techically" dog treats aren't considered "food" by anyone other than dog lovers! |
