Belly Bands I was wondering if anybody here has ever made your own belly bands and if you have any simple instructions. Key word simple, my sewing skills are minimal.:D I have an old guy that's in kidney failure and he's not able to control his bladder anymore. I've been using baby diapers on him but I'd like to use something that's washable. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. |
I'm not going to lie, I've never made one before. In a pinch, I've used old knee high socks to use as an impromptu belly band for foster babies that were bigger than my boy. Kept them from marking my house on their short stay with me. |
I can not sew a straight stitch! If you are reading this and can sew, STOP reading immediately!! It is almost sacreligious what I have done and called it "sewing a belly band"....!!!! I measured around the dogs waist....I added 4 additional inches. I had a piece of heavy cotton material that was then 17 inches long, and 8 inches wide. Folded the material down the middle length-wise, folded over about 1/2 in on the long cut edge, and sewed straight down the length of the bans, and then across both ends so it doesnt unravel. Then I got velcro....2 - two inch wide strips, 3 inches long....and sewed them side by side at one end....and sewed the other piece of velcro on the other end, other side of the band. Then I put an Always heavy duty pad over pups penis, and held it in place with the belly band, overlapping the ends and securing it with the velcro. VERY CRUDE production, but it works and was VERY cost effective! (I also used an old bra, cut around the bra so I had a band of elastic, without the bra cups, and I wrapped it around the dog and used the hook and eye thingies already on the bra sra to secure the ends!) |
What is the measurement around his waist? I might have an extra belly band you can have. |

I used my husbands old polo shirt that had a stain and cut it for material. I folded one strip about 3inches wide several times to make a pad. I measured from back leg to stomach to determine width. Then measured around the waist for length. The strip I used was twice the width because I fold it in half and waist plus 4inches so it can over lap. I take my material fold it in half (hot dog long length) and stick the pad in the middle. Then I sew it shut on the edges. I then added strips of Velcro to the ends. I made some for my boys so when visit my parents they don't have to worry about accidents. |
Whatever you end up using, let me advise you on the pads you use. Don't use feminine hygiene pads as they don't hold urine well. You need to get the adult incontinence pads. Depending on the size you get, you can cut them in 3 or 4 pieces. Then, they attach to the belly band the same way as the feminine pads. |

YorkieMom.. I might have some little ones you can have.. they are about 4 inches wide and 12 inches long.. if that helps.. let me know.. would let you have them.. I think I might have 4 of them.. |
Linda, I use the incontinence pads....I tape the cut ends close so all the stuffing doesnt fall out....do you tape the cut ends??? Is that necessary? |

I can not sew a lick, but I made my first belly band before I decided to buy some, and it actually fits better than the bought ones, because it is stretchy. I had an old baggy sweatshirt and I cut the sleeve off. The sleeve was bigger around than Huey, so I opened it up at the seam. I folded it in half (like you would turn your sleeve up, but with the rougher side in) and used that iron-on tape to secure all 3 open ends. I then attached velcro to each short end. The width of the sleeve wraps around Huey with enough overlap to fasten the velcro. Add the feminine napkin, and Voila! (that iron-on hemming tape is Da Bomb! I use it for everything!) |
