YAAAY I finally got a sewing machine! Yay! I got a very basic Brother sewing machine for $44 today! Regular price is $75! Thank you Black Friday and walmart 15% off card :D It really is a simple machine but I don't know a thing about sewing so I figured I would learn the basics. I am so happy though! I Feel like I need to name my first machine LOL ;) I watched the DVD and learned how to thread the machine. At first I was having problems getting the lower thread from the bobbin to pop up through the footer thing but I finally got it and sewed my first stitches ever on a scrap of fabric. So excited!!! LOL I was so giddy. I want to sign up for classes and I have lots to learn. You guys have always inspired me and I hope I can be even a teeny tiny bit as talented as the fabulous YT sewing ladies! P.s. I will try not to ask too many overly obvious, stupid questions haha. |
Good for you Carmen! :) I'll be the first to offer advice: always be sure your top thread & bobbin are threaded correctly (you'll know if it's wrong because your stitches won't be right). Get yourself a good sewing encyclopedia type book for when you need more info on something. Google is your friend too! (TONS of sewing videos online.) Have fun. In no time you'll be whipping out all sort of stuff for your girls! Can't wait to see your very first creation. :D |
How awesome! Joann fabric has great sales on classes incase you have one near you! Cannot wait to see what you create! Youtube also like Sherry said lots and lots of tutorials. |
Woo! Thanks ladies, I an still giddy today about my machine! I havent touched it today but I am reading up on terminology and put together a list of supplies I need to start my kit. I have been rrading this blog Finding my Feet Sewing 101 Class and am going to go along with her guide. Hopefully I will complete my first project in a few weeks. I have time off from work in December so I will take the Joanns getting to know my machine class then. Question though...I know it varies greatly but I am kinda pressed for space and I want to know what kind of table I should look for to work on. Right now I am at my coffee table LOL and the dogs aren't happy about being unable to lay on the couch near my stuff. Would a computer desk work? Card table? And for a chair would am office chair work? Appreciate yalls input. Happy Friday! :) Ps thank you Sherry for my first sewing advice and Mel for the heads up! |
I have a small, very compact sewing cart with a fold-out expanded table area and shelves. I think it came from Joann's online. I also have a 7x3' crafters table that has been great. I started out with a tv table and cutting fabric on my pub height table, so use what works. Mostly, enjoy! :) |
Yay... how cool, I remember you saying how much you've always wanted to learn how to sew. Let the fun begin ! :) Quote:
Tips: Make sure that you have a seem ripper, and when (not if) you need to use it because you will believe me. Be sure that you do not puncture the fabric. Be very careful to only get ahold of the stitching. And when starting and finishing a row or item on you sewing machine be sure to always back stitch to secure your stitching. When laying out your fabric to cut your pattern, always be sure that the two front side are facing one another. Start with some easy type items, things with straight lines until you get use to your machine. Some of my first projects were curtains/valance or swags, pillow cases, table runners, throw pillows. Things like that. Things to spruce up our home. Have fun and I cant wait to see your first sewing project !! |
Yay! Congratulations! There is no such thing as a stupid question! Just holler! |
Congratulations! Mine has been sitting in the closet for about thirty years. I wish I knew how to sew, I may try a few lessons. I've seen some of the really cute things that YT members have made. Don't put in the closet, I wish I had not put mine there. |
WOW good for you!! Cannt wait to see what you create as you learn. |
I completed a dress bodice but need help with the skirt. I think I have to do a zigzag stitch to manually gather the fabric but I tried that and my thread isn't bunching together?? I tried lengthening the zigzag and loosening the tension..help? |
After a quick Google I tried the straight stitch method and that worked like a charm. Still would like to know what I was doing wrong with the zigzag. |
Okat, seriously, what gives? I have been trying to ruffle this skirt for hours. The thread keeps snapping when I try to move the ruffle along the length of the stitch no matter how gently I pull the thread. Should I try a thicker thread? |

Straight stitch set to the longest stich your machine had and loosen your tension the lowest setting. Zip zag will not work ! And don't forget to switch them back before you start to sew again... Quote:
You may want to try to loosen your tension a bit and always, always try it on scrap material first .. Plus, Let the machine do the work for you, you don't have to push the fabric. You pretty much just have to guide the material and keep it lined up with the foot in order to get a straight stitch with the correct amount of seam allowance the entire width of the item. You are more than welcome to call me: PM through FB and I will give you my number. |
1 Attachment(s) Very first thing I ever sewed. I haven't pressed it yet so the ruffles and edges aren't very crisp and I haven't added a bow yet either. Don't make fun of it too much! It was really great practice. Before this I have only practice hems and seams on scraps. Attachment 394518 |
That is precious! |
