Help attaching D-rings? My sister & I would like to attach D rings to clothes we already own. 1) We tried sewing them on by hand but the threads slip through the little opening in the D-ring. Are there any rings that are completely closed & don't have the opening? 2) If not, should we use a ribbon somehow? We do have a sewing machine. I'm thinking we loop the ribbon through the ring & sew the 2 folded-over ends together onto the item. Will this work or is there a better way? (I have seen the ribbon sewed up the length of the item, but I wouldn't want to do this on pieces that are already made.) Thank you for any help you can give. As you can imagine, we're beginners at sewing for our babies! |
to me the only two safe ways to attach a d ring, is to sew it into the garment between the bodice and skirt, that is of course if it is a dress, or run a piece of fabric down the center of the bodice, and attached the d ring to the center of the bodice if it is a dress, or at the bottom if it is a vest. If you post pictures of the some of the outfits you are trying to work on, perhaps we can give you some better suggestions. |
Thanks for the ideas but I think the 2 ways you mentioned are a bit too complex for what I want. Lately I've been hooking the leash to anything I can find on the clothes: a shoulder strap, the middle of a bow, even the brand label if it's a loop. My dogs are really small & I feel that's safe enough for our needs. (I live in a community where leash laws are highly enforced & most dogs are small. When approaching a larger dog I pick them up.) I've got maybe 30-50 items of clothing-T-shirts, dresses, coats-that I'd like to add hooks to. Any other ideas? Thanks again. |

You do need to use either strong ribbon or fabric...then sew them on using a zipper foot so that you can get close to the d-ring. |
I've not done this for the described purpose, but... I've made a "U" shaped piece of material, snugly wide where the D Ring is held well in place, and sewn the U to my Field Jacket, encapsulating the D Ring in the bottom of the U. If the width of the material is sufficient, the Ring will stay in place and not turn. It was sorta like making a wide Belt Loop, and folding it in half to cradle the Ring. |
We make sure to buy the welded d rings, they are all one piece with no split, cost more though. |

If you only need a few d-rings you can purchase a package of 4 for under $1.00 at walmart in the sewing department. They have a few sizes sizes. That's where I get mine. |
I would suggest using a good ribbon (not satin) and be sure to burn the edges so that is does not unravel. Put the D-ring between it evenly spaced than sew a line across several times using he reverse stitch. Once that is done . . Than to attach to the garment by using a seem ripper to open the seem at the space where you want to attach the D=ring between the bodice and the skirt. Than insert the ribbon/D-ring and re sew it on the seem opposite side of the garment. If that is so complicated I would suggest doing the ribbon along the length of the bodice as Donna described above. That may be the easiest and less time consuming way of getting it done. |

It's fun to read all your responses-thank you. Some of you sound like very good & experienced dog clothes makers! Now that I know they make the welded d-rings I think we could just attach them with some sewing by hand by anchoring the 2 corners. That seems easy & lightweight. |

[QUOTE] The experts out there, will probably laugh at these, I'm no seamstress, but the D rings have always stayed in place, so it works, even if it's not pretty. :) I use binding, threaded through the ring, then sew along the edge by hand. Sometimes I use canvas ribbon. Always solid d rings. Then I sew the binding in onto the t-shirt, harness etc. I double or triple sew everything. |
