Sewing question! Okie dokie all you sewing gurus. I have a question. How do you make the scrunched part of the skirt. Like where the top meets the skirt, is it possible to do on a machine? I'd like to try it! I'm attempting a onsie conversion and want to add a little flair to the bottom without its looking like a mess or a blob. :) Any help is appreciated!!! Anyone willing to make a video? Hehe just kidding....maybe :D |
I use my machine with the longest stitch length setting to run 2 rows spaced about 1/4 inch apart to do my gathering. Then I gather towards the center from both ends towards the middle until the skirt width matches the top width. I attach the two with another row of stitches set to a normal stitch length and then remove my gathering threads from the skirt. |

Here is a video that goes over the same thing. The only thing she does differently is she pulls the gathers from just one end. Both ways work. How to Gather: a basic sewing tutorial - YouTube |
Ok excellent! Thanks so much! |
I use a gathering foot, but if you don't have one, you can do a wide zigzag stitch over dental floss. Be careful to not catch the floss in a stitch. Then you can pull the floss from either or both ends to gather the fabric. it seems to gather easier than the two rows of stitching I learned years ago. :) |

Is there a reason why my needle keeps unthreading? It's doing it about 75% of the time. I have it threaded right and under the foot, but it just keeps coming out :( |
Once it comes out it gets all tangled up top |
when you have threaded the machine up make sure you pull the thread towards the back and pull a long line of thread out befor you start sewing this usually works for me :) |
As you begin to sew, hold the two thread tails until you have done 2 or 3 stitches. That way they wont get pulled down into the machine and wad up. |
Also, as you raise the needle to re-thread, turn the wheel toward you instead of away. That's the way the machine stitches and it won't pull as much thread back out as you begin to sew. To keep the thread from wadding up, you can take a stitch this way and then pull the bobbin thread to the top and then put both under and to the back of the presser foot. Quilters do this so they won't have a knotty messes on the underside of the quilt. Hope this makes sense. |

Yep, I agree make sure it is threaded right. Make sure the thread is in the tensions then do a little back and forth, like flossing. Usually when this happens it isn't the machine, it is operator error. |
