Onsie conversion disaster / Need help sewing stretchy material !! 1 Attachment(s) Ok thought I would give this a try and I did pretty good. I sat down put my thinking cap on and started the process. 1. Cut the onesie to length- check  2. Cut 2 layer skirt and hemmed - check  (first attempt at doing a single hemline) 3. Figured out how to attach the skirt to the onesie - check  (only took three tries before getting it right) 4. Put hem in onesie using stretch stitching - failure :thumbdown (my machine must have been hungry because it kept eating the onesie) * I used a stretch stitch, I tried three different ones. The straight stitch worked the best. So, I thought. Just when I though I was doing well and I was going to make it to the end this time, Nope my machine got hungry and ate the darn onesie again. I tried sewing on the straight edge and that didn't work. Than tried turning under a hem line and sewing it, nope that didn't work either only make it worse. Ended up having to cut the bottom of it off and start again and nope, still messed it up. It was like an episode of sewing machines from hell. Please Help, tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to correct it ! |
I'm not real good with knits, but I would glue-baste the hem first, or pin it without stretching it. If that doesn't work, try using a tear-away stabilizer under the fabric. |
It looks to me like your thread tension is too tight. Try loosening that a bit. There should be a control on your machine. |
Hmm hadn't though about that. I tried the pinning and yes no stretching. I let the machine do the work, no pulling or pushing ! Do you mean use a fabric glue or that iron on hem stuff? |

Dawn, are you using a needle for stretch knits? |
You should use a ballpoint needle. You could place a very light tear away stabilizer under the fabric also. |

I'll try those changes on the next one I do. *New needle *Stabilizer glue of fabric. Got it ....You all are Awesome thanks so much. :D :) ;) I actually did finish the dress and it turned out pretty good that is as long as you don't look at the underneath side. According to the rules I can not post another fashion thread until next week. |
always use stabilizer with knit or jersey. |
I've never had a problem sewing a onesie. Used a regular straight stitch with no problem. Hmm, might be your tension with thread. |

Sounds like you've gotten good advice. My guess is the needle too. ;) |
Yes, everyone else is right about the needle. Here's a video that gives some good info |
Thank you for the video Leslie I have a little better understanding about working with knits now. I have one more adorable onsie I want to do and hopefully I will do better than my first attempt. If not no worries, I'll just stick to what I know. Just always wanted to try it and see if I could do it. |
I've been wanting to work with knit for some time now. I'd like to use it to make dresses for larger breeds. I just haven't found the time to sit and play with it. |
